I was curious if anyone has weight the Menedola MD5. Even better, has compared the weights of different transmissions.

Darren-
Per my friends at Sand Sports Magazine, here's what I was able to come up with:
• Mendeola MD5/MD4S = 155 lbs.
• Fortin 4/5spd = 145 lbs. Max (completely assembled with oil pump, P/S pump, 40 spline 934.5 CV flanges and chromoly diff.)
• Jeff Fields 3spd "Raceauto" = 220 lbs.
I hope that helps!

Thanks Tony,
I'm surprised the MD5 is heavier than the Fortin. Thank again for the info.

If you have ever seen the huge **BAN ME****BAN ME****BAN ME****BAN ME****BAN ME** beefy stuff that goes into the MD5 you will know why it weighs so much. Ive seen a piece that starts out as a+ /- 200 lb chunk of billet and ends up being +/- 25 lbs.
Very beefy indeed! and very $ too. http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My understanding is that the Albins weighs in at ~220 lbs give or take a little depending on 5 or 6 speed.

i know there are alot of different options out there for transmisions, but they seem to be awfully expensive to get a tranny that will take 500hp off road. a th350 and a 9" are good in a truck, but there would seem to be a better way then $15k-20k on a tranny that grenades after a jump, or has to be rebuilt every race. i am not bashing anyone, so do not get offended, but i would like to understand.

I went through B&M 700R4's like they were going out of style. Three in one year. That was behind a built 4.3L Chevy V6 in an S-10 with a Ford 9" and 31-spline axles. The Ford 9" was easily three times as strong as the POS B&M. It takes $$$ to build a quality race transmission. When you start using bitchin [I have been warned] camaro parts they are just plain expensive. I've re-built an auto transmission or two myself and with the right tools (some custom built for one purpose) you can build and prep your own trans but the parts still ain't cheap. Surviving those shock loads takes some seriously strong parts. A cheap tranny that might survive hundreds of passes down the strip won't live for crap out in the dirt. Cheap is just cheap.
If I had it all to do over again I'd run a built TH-400 with an overdrive - it would've been cheaper and i had plenty of room to fit it all.

We've got apples, oranges, and pears here... It started out with the weight of transaxles. Then the cost of transmissions. Now it's what transmissions hold up better. lol

The thread was too on topic. Problem solved http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/smile.gif Since the original question was properly answered the off-topicness is no problemo.

But what difference does it make what transaxle weighs what? Aren't they chosen based on their capabilities?

More of topic, but whos got info on the tranny Mcmillan's had built,I heard it was a full custom expensive auto? Also heard the bought Rancho Transmission?
If anybodies been to KARTEK lately Roys' unmachined cast housing for an auto is there in the showroom as a paper weight for know, but I know all the ring & pinions are made-also there 4-ft high on a pallet.Tranny is similiar to a Jeff Fields but uses a torqueflite 3-speed...I think?no pretty sure..

Ring and pinions…..they’re already doomed. I had a Torqueflight grafted directly to a Halibrand Q/C rear end about two decades ago. The T/F is a fairly strong animal. The valve bodies are crude so they have to go full manual. The main case with bell housing and all is only about 16 inches long.
