toyota steering

well i was trying to keep my trucks construction somewhat a secret, but ive run into a problem with the steering and the new suspension. my problem is that with the design of the lower arm, it causes a clearance issue with the inner heim of the steering. basically what needs to be done is the centerlink needs to be moved foward a little bit. has anyone on here done a similar mod to the toyota steering, oh ya its a 91 2wd. attached is a picture of the basic outline of the new lower arm. the arms are a rear mounted strut design, so its the front straight tube that is causing a problem, the small tube at the end that is used for mounting it to the frame is where the problem arises. i modified the centerlink for no to allow the truck to be driven, but it needs to be changed to keep from future problems.

On my old Toyota we cut off the steering box + the idler arm and pitman arm and moved everything forward 4 or 5" I believe it was. We also had the A arms moved forward 3".

ya the design of the lower arm moved the whole suspension foward a little. i have a picture of where the problem is. another solution i could look into is just having the centerlink sitting a little higher, we already had plans to build a new idler arm and steering arm, if we designed them to move the center link up a half an inch or so would that be a problem? otherwise i will just have to move all the steering foward a bit. also the modification i did to the center link for now is i cut both ends off the old center that had the balljoint type thing, set those in a peice of tubing, and notched 2 spots on the tubing for a small piece of tube to go through for the bolt for the heim to mount. i also put the heim on the front side of the centerlink, which causes many other clearance problems when cycling the suspension.

If you look at the pic, the circled hole is the original mounting hole for the steering box. The wheels were moved forwad about 2" and We needed to clear the upper arm with the steering collum. The steering arms on the spindles will need to be realigned to keep the akerman angle correct.

how do u know where to move the steering mount on the spindle to keep the ackerman angle correct??

If the move forward produces say a 5 DEG. change the angle of the arm 5 DEG. farther out. Basically your just trying to keep the same angles you had when stock. On that truck the pitman arm got lengthend about 2" for a little quick steer so the angles didn't change all that much.
