I have a Toyota question for you guys... I inherited my dads '80 SR5 long-bed beater pickup. It has been spiking the temp gauge right after starting, or at least pretty quickly anyway. I would shut it down right away, and wait a few minutes start again and it wouldn't get hot again. It always runs great for a truck with over 200,000 mile on it. I loaned it to a friend to move, & warned them about the over heating, and told them to make sure & keep an eye on the water & oil. Well, they called me up & told me it blew the head gasket. http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/frown.gif This thing has a 21R motor in it, if I need to get a new/used head, what head would I get if I can't find a 21R??? Would it take a 20R or a 22R?? I don't have a clue about this truck. Oh while I'm asking about this truck, does anyone make any suspension parts to get a little more travel out of something this old?? Or should I just junk it?

I believe the 21r is an oddball motor, a used low mileage Japanese motor, I had one in my truck when I originally bought it and played hell trying to get someone to take it as a core for a rebuild. Somthing about the block and head heights being differant than the 22r. A 20r head MAY fit on the 21r block, www.enginebuilder.com (http://www.enginebuilder.com) may know.
As far as early Yota front ends...the upper ball joints are differant, if you go with an aftermarket upper arm you'll have to use a later ball joint, the steering box and idler arm are also differant, not sure if later model steering parts can be adapted. http://chaosfab.com/ would / should have some answers for ya.
Don't know if I helped but, I say put in a new motor and some suspension on it.

When I was ready to build my 81 2wd I emailed back and forth with total chaos for a while and they dont make anything for these truck nor do they plan to. Downey sells upper arms, tortion bars, 10" travel ball joints and dual shock kits those are the only parts compatible according to them. Only thing is that it wont actually pull 10" unless you get the strut frame which dosent fit on the pre 84 trucks.
Ive been thinking of making it SFA with a 4.3 vortec instead of a prerunner.

Yeah, thanks for the info. A guy that came by to look at my truck because he was interested in buying it said the 21r engines were forklift engines. He said he knew that because he was a forklift mechanic, I don't know so I couldn't argue the point. Anyway now I have to put money in it just so I can sell it. I clicked on that enginebuilders link, it only took me to one of those "make us your home page search sites". Is the link spelling correct?
I looked at Total Chaos, and other sites, but seems no one has stuff for anything older than '84. I was just curious in case I do end up keeping it.
Anybody got a running 20r or 22r they wanna get rid of cheap?? lol Thanks I'll be coming down to McKenzie's & KarTek in a couple weeks so I could come by & help ya clear a spot in your garage. http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Thanks for the info. And sorry for kinda thread jacking from the thread starter.

wouldnt be selling it if it was.
If I get a kit for an 84+ truck and somehow get the strut frame to fit, would I be able to just get spindles for an 84+ truck and have it work?

This claims to be compatible with 79-95 two wheel drive yotas.

in ATS's, inland trucks defense...ive herad BETTER things about inland trucks than ATS, and i know scott knows how to build good stuff, i just think that he hires people who are possibly lazy and dont like to use the jig.
a kit like the one that JDfab, amplified, and myself (ESBfab) sell, all use a reverse mounted strut frame rather than a forward mounted. if the lower arm pivots are in the same relation to the top of the frame then you could use one of our kits with a newer spindle and just make it fit, but no gaurentees

Ah, Thanks!! That's more like it... lol I just got he estimate for fixin' my yota, $1700. Seems a little steep to me for a blowed head gasket.
I'll have to see what all he has on this estimate. They said since it's a 21R that the gasket set has to be special ordered through some place in L.A. from Japan, and it costs more than a 20R or 22R gasket set.
I may just junk it. What do you guys think??
Thanks Wes

OK, say I was to buy your motor, or any other 22R, what else will have to be changed over for the 22R to work in an 80 SR5 2wd PU? Different motor mounts, Tranny/Bellhousing, Exhaust, etc.?? Like I said I don't know sqwat about this truck. Or should I just try to find a 20R and for get about it. Suggestions?? This is kicking my buggy projects budget all to hello, the person that blew it up, now says they ain't payin. Thanks

I mentioned I had a 21r previously, I swaped it for a 22r with zero changes, manifolds, distributor, motor mounts, ect. all swaped over. Since the 21r is a japanese take out, your parts were most likely on a 20r originally.

Yeah, this truck originally had a 20R in it when my dad blew it up and he got one of the used japanese engines engines that ended up being the 21R. I didn't know if the parts for the 21 were the same as the 20, or the 22, or if they were all the same. I'm guessing it's more like the 22 if you didn't have any problems, cuz I think he had to get some different parts, manifolds or something. That's why I'm asking. Thanks, I may just buy an engine & swap it myself instead of getting a head gasket for $1700.00 http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/shocked.gif http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Don't know all that much about Inland Truck, but ATS/scott really knows his stuff. I am biased because I've known scott since he was racing stock mini, but he defently knows his stuff. ATS is/was a great product, just wasn't marketed well. as far as I know Inland Trucks isn't ATS, scott works there and I think he gave I.T. design work or somthing.

I think there's a 22R for $250 in the classifieds right now.
