A friend of mine at work was wondering if any of you guys might be able to help him out. Here is his question...

"I have an 87 Nissan Hardbody 4x4 with the 2.4 4-cylinder engine with 5 speed manual transmission. The engine has had some problems and is making a knocking noise that could be either a wrist pin or a rod.

I have found a 90 Nissan Pathfinder with a V6 and an auto trans. I was wondering if this would be a compatible swap?
The V6 is in great condition and it would be nice to get a bit more power in the truck.

Has anyone ever done something like this? Would I have to find a manual trans for the V6 and change that as well? Is there any performance problem with putting an engine from an automatic vehicle into a manual vehicle?"

Chris really wants to get his truck back on the road so if anyone has any info for him, it is greatly appreciated!! I'm not familiar with Nissans, so I didn't know if they have interchangeable bell housings, of if he may need to get a different tranny or what, so I told him I'd ask you guys.

Thanks
Wes

All 4 Cly NAPZ&KA24 stuff does not work with the V6 VG3.0 I and E. The Bellhousing is different and you will need all MOTOR, TRANS, ECU, HARNESS, CROSS MEMBERS, MOUNTS, ETC. Good thing is that you have a 4x4, they made a Hardbody with a V6 4x4 from 86-95 i think. So the mounts should be interchangable with the 4x4 chassis.

IMO, For the HP&PITA I would rebuild the NAPZ to run another 200K.

A pathfinder is pretty much a hard body those years. SO you might be able to swap all the parts said by SLR off your donor path. But the 2.4 is a stout, solid, dependable motor that you will not have problems with, and the power to weight diffference between them and the 3.0 makes you better off just to re-build the 2.4. the 3 litre, and even 3.3 are sort of dogs and a 2.4 is not much worse. Stick with the 2.4 for 200k more then loook for a new frontier with the 4.0 to build by then!

Thanks guys! Chris just stopped by a while ago and read your posts. That is just the info he was looking for. I had told him it could be a big project/mess but wasn't sure how interchangeable the engines might be. He wanted me to tell you thanks!! He is going to get his engine rebuilt instead of doing the swap.
Thanks again...
