Does anyone know if a 4l60 or 700R4 will bolt up to the pontiac 3800 series supercharged V6? Also do you think it would work good in a small truck for off road use? Want'd to use a northstar or ls1 but the ones I've seen are too expensive. Thanks for all your help.

I had a Buick GN (Turbo 3.8, supposedly the same as Pontiac's 3.8), and they all came with 2004R trans which were crap. I grenaded 3 or 4 of them after adding only headers and an intercooler. I understand there are guys now who can make them really good trannies and they are actually becoming quite popular. There was a short time in '88 or '89 when you could get a Firebird (SSA I think) with the same engine as the GN. Don't know what trans they used, or if the 700R4 (Vette style?) trans are direct bolt-ups or not. I'm pretty sure the all the Grand Prix Pontiac 3.8s were/are mounted sideways for front drive.

There are tons of sites/forums dedicated to these engines, so do a little yahooing. I'm sure you'd love the thing for off roading even bone stock.

The 3800 bolts up to a 4L60... or a Getrag 5 speed. That's what they used in the V6 Camaros. .

From http://www.hotrodders.com/t2347-15-2.html

the bellhousing pattern on the 3800 is the same as most other Fwd 2.8,3.1 & 3.4 also the old S10 and Camaro 2.8.(RWD) The fly wheel on the 3800 Sc has a balance all of its own, but you can have a flywheel from a reg 3800 re-balanced. The bellhousing pattern is different than the old 3.8 olds like the grand nationals.
