well i just got done polishing the living ____ out of my follow bar that had a few small nicks in it from a previous owner. I dont want this type of thing to happen again and was wondering if heat treating it would prevent such a thing from happening again. Furthermore are the dies sent out already heat treated because i dont know if you can heat treat a piece more than once. Right now i am just using a ton of grease on the follow bar and spraying down the tube with wd-40 to prevent nicks from occuring. Thanks in Advance

Also does anybody know of a near Manhattan Beach that does heat treating, i have a few items i need to get done outside the realm of offroad racing

Just make sure the tube is CLEAN (meaning scotch brite off all rust, etc.) before you run it, and use wd-40 on the dies and you should be fine.

How big a die can you get for those? Anything big enought to bend pipe for exhaust or are they not really good for that sort of thing?

Heat treating the follow bar will eliminate the scaring of it if you happen to drag through a chip or a dirty tube. Before you heat treat you may want to repair the follow bar by taking it to a shop that can grind the same radius of the die. IF you need some references pm me cuz I went through the same thing.

Are you bending good metal or the welded steel tubing, if it is the welded stuff it is so soft that it will almost always scare, try using some white lithieum grease.

The metal is all really clean, i have been truely anal about that cause i know how it can scar up the bar. The previous owner of the bender only used WD-40 and put a few small knicks in it, i am using wd-40 on the tube after its been thoroughly cleaned and grease on the fallow bar and the tubes havent mard (sp?). So now i have to find a place to get the fallow bar heat treated along with a few other parts got a new project ('88 porsche 911/930 body) http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The elctricly welded steel tubing has nicks on it that part of the forming process. We like to call it WOOD cause compared to the DOM tubing it might as well be wood, you almost have to take a scratch pad to the tubing before you put it in the bender, i found it was just easier to use 4130 or 1020 only in it and I have not had a scar in years.

for the welded tubing are these nicks/scratches usually concentrated around the weld? Or can it occur around the entire tube?

The entire tube, the material is softer than dom.
