Do any of you have an aftermarket MAS on your 4.0L? That works? I tried two different Granetelli's and each one threw a code. I even reset the computer numerous times... So I am getting my money back for that one... and would like to buy one that works... if you guys can recommend one.

we use www.pro-flow.com (http://www.pro-flow.com) on our race truck. We had one on our 91 4.0 and never had a problem in the 4 years we ran it. We now have a Bullet 75mm on our SOHC 4.0 and it works great. Give them a call.

ray over on dr has one on his 4.0 and seems to like it. I just ordered one for my 2.3 and they shipped the wrong one but the constomer service seemed pretty good so far on returning it.

Say you put a MAS on and an intake kit on a 4.0. What kind of HP gains are we looking at here?

We stopped selling all Granatelli products due to problems and failures we saw with the Chevy guys. I don't have much experience with Granatelli 4.0L products but if they are anything like their LS1 stuff I'd keep doing my homework before I plunked down the cash to buy one. I'd investigate all of the aftermarket MAF sensors with plenty of caution as they aren't always a necessary modification. More air in doesn't necessarily mean more power at the wheels. Granatelli products have also destroyed more than one Chevy motor due to a really bad lean condition caused by a bad signal. Mass air yes but without any fuel it lead to some nasty piston melting problemos. A lean condition was probably the cause for the trouble codes you had as this is a common complaint. I've learned to be skeptical about anything I read on the internet - if you can find a local shop that knows their 4.0L stuff I'd see what they recommend.

What are the ultimate goals of this motor anyway?

This is a funny side note to this post, but still applicable. I have a K&N conical filter on my 5.0 connected directly to the mas, it had issues with driveability and off idle surge. I made a 5" extension from aluminum tube and it now runs great. My ranger has the filter on the mas air also, but no problems. But im wondering if there is an issue of the mas not getting a good reading because the airflow is not good. If you want Ryan, you can come by the shop and i can mock something up to see if it makes a difference.

We had similar problems with the old RD400's. K&N's produce a lot of turbulance, if they are mounted to close to the carb or MAF, they can do funny things. We also solved the problem on the bikes with an 3" extension.

I've got this darn surging problem on my 97', and some times it just stalls for no reson. I have done all the normal things, but keep getting lean condition, and can not seem to find the problem. Everything under the hood is stock.

Food for thought;

Some of these things that don't set codes on a 91 might set a code on like a 95 or later because of OBD II.

also, the surge at idle on the 97 might be caused by a dirty hotwire. Try cleaning with some alcahol on a Q-tip, you'll be surprised on how much crud gets by the air filter and it might just fix your idle.

What is the "hot wire". if it is in the mas, I have replaced th unit, and no change.
