Where do you mount the whips on a dirt bike, got any pics for example ???

You need a bracket that mounts onto the axle bolt of rear swing arm. Whip bolts onto mount.

they suck mounted on a dirtbike! they get to much flex and the whip will keep hitting your helmet, or else it will just drag when your miving fast. you need to mount the bracket, and drill a little small hole on the side of your rear fender (big enough to fit a zip tie through) mount the whip to the bracket on your axel and then zip tie the middle of the whip to your fender, and that will help that whip stay in its place.

Can you pick up those brackets just about anywhere?

Just curious, why are you putting a whip on your bike?

So you dont get pulled over and arrested for DUI at glamis. The aluminum tab that most shops sell for 10 bucks flat out suck...make your own if you have the ability. They wont fit the 32mm nut iwhtout bending it and then you are cold working the aluminum which already doesnt like that and ti eventually rips and breaks off...I will never use one of those again...somebody needs to make some billet ones that actually fit right.

It's the law too...

Don't want any BLMers going Kung Fu on your ass either!

The one in the photo looks like a billet piece not a bent part .

I've seen a few people mount a 2-3 ft. whip to the back of thier chest protector, seemed to work pretty good.

make sure you get the good whips that are a full 1/2 dia. at the bottom. the 2 pc and small 3/8" flags are for no-go trucks only. also make sure you mount it opposite the exhaust, seems silly but many people melt them off right away when they mount them on the exhaust side.
we haven't had any luck with aluminum mounts at all, they always break. 1/4" steel ones hold up forever. not sure where to get them on the west coast but duneland can ship them. www.davidallenracing.com (http://www.davidallenracing.com)

Ross have you ever cracked off a fender with a half inch flag or are you mounting it to the swingarm? 1/2 inch is burly and will probably ding your helmet if you are riding at a nice clip and stuff it.

Flags may be the law but they are stupid on dirtbikes...completely useless. I have been riding in glamis since 1982 and going sicne 1979....not to say that I remeber much from way back then but for as far back as I remeber....flags on dirtbikes are useless.

I agree, Flags are stupid on dirt bikes, and when my brother got a ticket for no flag, he wrote a long letter to the BLM (or whoever gave the ticket) on how it was actually dangerous to the rider to have a whip flag on a dirt bike, and how you really can't see the flag on a moving bike anyway because they are mounted so low to the ground, and always blowing backwards.
I don't think he ever paid the ticket, and I think now he just has the bracket with a broken piece of whip in it so that he can say oops, must have lost it on that last hill.

What happens if you don't pay a ticket. Haloween weekened I got a ticket for siding in the bed of a truck commin back from olds. "Stupid Ticket". They said you have 21 days to pay it, but i finally sent the money in today and its been 3 weeks. Do you thik I'll still have a warrant cause i didn't pay within the 21 days and have to go to court or will they just drop it ???

And as for the flag, I made a steel bracket going off the swingarm and another bracket off the fender to stabalize the flag from flapping around

kris we always mount them off the swing arm. the DAR flag bracket is similar to the AL one pictured and it mounts off the wheel bolt. we've made a couple custom brackets that clamp to the swing arm and move the flag back an extra 6" these are a lot nicer because they don't require removal of the wheel to install and they get the flag a little farther out of the way.

as far as flags being useless on a bike i disagree, IMO the small flags shouldn't be allowed at all, but the big flags are stiff enough to help. up here things are real tight in the dunes and the way we ride those flags have saved my life countless times. we generally lay the flag back just enough so it doesn't hit you while riding but that really isn't that far because the big flags don't flex as much as the small ones.

you guys got me dreaming of another trip to glamis, maybe next year. http://www.race-dezert.com/vb3/attachments/old/images/graemlins/frown.gif

9 dirt bikes at my camp this weekend...all mounted to swing arm...first ride I lost mine but was aware and went back to pick it up and took it into Dan and Fish's camp for a pit stop. By the end of the day only two bikes had flags still on them( the guy who kept talking about going big but just sat around camp and spun cookies and a guy on a Bob Hannah edition 1981 Yamaha...go figure the two guys who dont ride hard enough to brake them off) I did find a good use for the cheezy aluminum mount tabs the other guys were running...it makes a nice bottle opener. My 10 gauge mount held up great but the flag broke off a second time and I didnt see it so I guess I have to waste another $10 on a flag that will brake off again. I think the swing arm action is way too much for the flag and it shears them off at the base. Quads dont break because they are mounted to the grab bar which doesnt move so violently

i guess you guys need some good michigan flags, we always have a spare or 2 at camp but have never needed one for anything other than a major crash. last time we were at glamis i was shocked at the rediculous little flags they let you run.

Don't they make you guys in Michigan mount the flags on the front of vehicles?

What is the actual rule about flags in the ISDRA? Minimum height I think is 6 foot but there is no specific language (if I remember correctly) if that meant the flag had to be 6 foot or if the flag had to reach 6 foot above the ground etc.

Here is the text of the rules off the GlamisOnline web site.

SAFETY FLAGS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL OFF-HIGHWAY VEHICLES. (This includes two-wheeled motorcycles). All off-highway vehicles shall be equipped with a an 8 ft whip mast and a 6"x12" red or orange flag. Flags may be of pennant, triangle, square, or rectangle shape. Masts must be securely mounted to the vehicle and extend 8 ft. from the ground to the mast tip. Safety flags must be attached within 10 inches of the tip of the whip mast with club or other flags mounted below the safety flag or on a another whip.

I cut my whip down and ziptied it to my chest protector last time i visited glamis and was unable to stab myself with it when i went over the bars. I forgot it was even there until i whacked a buddy in the face with it. And i thought you were allowed to ride in the back of a truck if you were in an off highway rec area.

Thanks for posting the rule. The way I read it, if the radio antenna on your truck is 8 feet off the ground at the tip, you can mount your flag there. The key appears to be 8 foot off the ground, not the actual length of the whip.
