The rear brakes lock up on occasion why? Bleading the master cylinder will temporarily fix the problem until the next occurance.

Clean, hone and rebuild the brake cylinders. And change your fluid. It’s cheap and easy.

Do this to your cylinders inside the drums not your master cylinder.

Make sure you have a bit of freeplay in the pedal throw before it begins moving fluid in the master cyclinder, if it does not, then it is always trying to apply a slight amount of pressure causing the brakes to want to grab all the time, also the brakes being adjusted too tight could be causing this.

Already installed new wheel cylinders.Checked linkage and did not have freeplay.I'll give this a try thanks.

Look at the slot cut on the adjusters for the shoe. Make sure that the angle matches the angle on the shoe. They need to match. Early hardware was cut straight across, later hardware had an angle. The shoes and the adjusters need to match. Also, there are tube spacers for the bolts going through the bulkhead for the master cylinder. If they are not in place, the bulkhead will crush when you tighten the bolts and that will screw up the master cylinder operating shaft adjustment. If that makes any sense at all...

Hey DaileyPedal I backed off the pressure between the master cylinder and firewall and this seemed to take care of the problem.Do I need to put a spacer between the firewalln and master cylinder? I'm not much of a VW guy but you would probaly would be happy to see me if your body is mangled up in the middle of the desert.I am actually doing this class 5 project for my friend.

The spacers actually go in the holes that bolts pass through, they keep you from crushing the bulkhead / firewall, they are sleeves,

Let's see some pictures!

What MGOBAJA said, they are steel tube sleeves that go over the two bolts. They often fall into the bulkhead when you remove the mastercylinder. Might still be floating around in the bulkhead. I am sure they are some metric tubing so it would be better to use the factory sleeves...or try to determine the wall and length and buy some seamless tubing...I say go to pick a part...

DING, DING, DING. . . . We have a winner!

That is usually what the problem is. If there are no spacers in the firewall, I would imagine the problem is compounded.

If the rod can jiggle, that's good. The gap is pretty small. I believe it works out to something like 1/4" - 3/8" of pedal travel.

You guys got it right. The problem was in spacing but this was an after market master cylinder so two washers between the master cylinder and fire wall cured the problem.Did I just say fire wall?I have been looking for weeks and I still cant find the motor up front there.
