I have a couple questions about building a VW Baja Bug. First What is the prime year for a bug what type cage should I use. How much will it cost in the end. What class would it run in. What rear end or suspension should I get? I'm just trying to find the cheapest way into desert racing. Thanks any other info would be great.
Thanks

Might want to look in the classifieds, if you want to go cheap, you don't want to start from scratch.
There are alot of very nice 5/16's in the classifieds right now for probably half of what would it cost to build a new one, and proven cars too.
It'll save you time and money, not just on the build, but the break in process, testing, tuning, etc.

There isn't really an ideal year to start with but from '66- mid 68' you would have to convert the front AND rear suspension to link pin/IRS while years on either end will only need one or the other changed (less work) -now this is for racing, if just a play car it all depends on how wild you want to go.
As for cage, you'll need to construct a very detailed structure to support things like suspension etc. There's no off the shelf set up that will suffice.
5/1600 is a great, fun, competitive class, however it is definatly not the absolute cheapest way to start desert racing (competitivly).
Hope this helps, Good Luck!
