How big of one are you looking at? I put one together using a swamp off of a house. Picked up a side draft swamp and mounted it to a moving dolly. Used a heavy duty extension cord and wired up a switch. Works great. And was alot cheaper than even the small portable swamps.
At work we use the giant port a cools but that is to cool off a huge shop. I think we need a few more to really do anything

We have a dozen of the big units in our 100k sq. ft. machine shop. They work great but the added moisture is starting to rear its head on that ways & other raw components of the machines.

We have two of the big ones at my hanger at work. I don't know the exact dimensions of the hanger off hand , but it's huge x huge. They work OK most of the time unless it is even the slightlest bit humid. I work in the high dez so that usually isn't a problem.

just like everybody says they work great as long as the humidity is low one 36" cools our 4000 sq.ft shop pretty well

I live in San Felipe, Baja year round. Swamp coolers work here even in September, the most humid month of the year. The secret to using swamp coolers is to only use the type that have a knob adjuster for the amount of water going through the system - turn the water knob down until it stops cooling, then just barely turn it up until it cools (the idea is to evaporate as much of the water in the system with the air fans - keeps the interior of your shop or home dry). Also, swamp coolers do not work in an enclosed area - you must have windows or doors open.
