SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- According to a published report, for the first time in history, a major presidential candidate will sponsor a race car in NASCAR’s top series.

SI.com is reporting that Barack Obama's campaign is in talks to become the primary sponsor of BAM Racing's No. 49 Sprint Cup racecar for the Pocono race on August 3rd.

The report said that a spokesperson with the team said they will hold a news conference in Miami on July 23rd.

Obama will be present at the news conference according to sources and the sponsorship will be part of the "Get Out The Vote" campaign message.

According to sources, the Association for Diversity in Motorsports (AFDIM) was an integral part of bringing the two camps together. Founded in '01, the organization works to heighten awareness of diversity in all forms of motorsports. They hope to tie their efforts in with a "Driving The Vote: Bridging The Gap" campaign to increase voter registration regardless of party affiliation.

Obama will be present at a fundraiser a week later hosted by BAM Racing owners Beth Ann and Tony Morgenthau, both of whom are on record as being Republican.

NASCAR is primarily known as a hotbed for conservatism with the founding France family donating money to Republican‘s in the past.

Looks like he declined.
The 49 car was available but its a Toyota and he does not want to be seen sponsoring a foreign make. Also, the driver Ken Shrader has made multiple donations to the Republican party over the last few years, which Obama was not really impressed with.

Maybe George Bush can sponsor the Toyota. He has done everything in his power to crush the American automakers, this could be just for ghits and siggles.

Last year the Conservative Party of Canada sponsored a car in Nascar's Canadian Tire series and it was a flop. They chose Pierre Bourque, who is sometimes referred to as the Canadian version of Matt Drudge with his website Bourque.org, yet he also fields his own full-time race team.
