I tired of using the same beat up carpet w/ 50lbs of dirt in it ( that never seems to coming out) as a pit mat. Anyone have any good ideas of a replacement or something that works better?

I found www.pitmatusa.com and they have a cool product but I can't tell if it would hold up to rocks and such?

Ideas?

I'm used to building entire trucks in the dirt so a little carpet is like herbsts shop to me lol.

But linoleum also works well, cheap, rolls up, can be swept off quickly, and wont allow oil/fluids to seep into the ground.

Looks like a very expensive tarp

Up at Herbst we had those lego style pads that were maybe 30" x 30". Each square has a puzzle pattern cut into it's entire perimeter and is intended to be locked into another piece. They seemed to work pretty good but it took an entire day to setup in front of the rig-then again we are talking about a pit section the length of the Herbst Bros. truck/trailer rig! Also, you have to sweep the ground that you are planning to put the mat down on top of in order to achieve a flat surface. This makes for a better fit for each piece too.

me too...

And it doesn't sound too durable either the following is from the FAQ on their site:

Will the mat hold up to floor jacks and/or pro jacks?
Yes, as long as proper care was taken to remove rocks and debris before setting up your Pitmat. If using on asphalt it is recommended to sweep the area first before setting up.

So as long as you pour a slab in the desert and clean it off before laying down the pitmat it will work great!

If there is a concern about rocks and such I wouldn't think it will hold up to a driver trying to make up time and get out of the pit quick...

my 2 cents is to try the outdoor type of carpet that is thin and doesn't have a knap to get sand/dirt and rocks caught in...

You need one of those outdoor rv mats. Durable, and you can hose them down when you get home.

Go to a casino in Vegas or Laughlin and get their old carpet (usually free)... then you have a new piece every race!

This is what I have for our pit or camping area. We usually stand on this and use plywood or carpet under vehicles. To pretty to get greasy! Like stated above, I can sweep it or hose it off easily. The little pieces of dirt/sand/whatever don't collect on it like astroturf or carpet.

I have a Pit mat from PITMATUSA....we used it at CORR all of last year...and it held up to everything...Floor jacks....tranny jacks...and even worked great at the beach with our trailer. Dean is great to deal with and the product is more than a heavy tarp. It is very durable and takes 2 people to carry it..
