I was just on the Kobalt tools website (kobalttools.com) and they have a portable CO2 system that has some potential. Has anyone tried it?

I have not tried it, for the size of the unit it would work for keeping your RC car clean for bit, Air up an MC or ATV tire but that would be about it.
You would be better off getting a larger tank (CO2 not scuba) and re-filling your own canister(s) if you needed a small air source once and and a while. E-bay has tons of paint ball tanks and the adapters to re-fill from a larger tank or cylinder. CO2 is very handy and also kind of addictive. I use mine insted of filling one of my compressors when I need to check tires. Its just quicker then I have to go get it filled, so much for quicker. I have two 10# tanks and use them for my jeep trips. I take one and make sure its full or very close, a scale will tell you.

Might work for a small nail gun for a while, but probably not. I have a 10lb Co2 kit from Powertank in the chase truck and a 15lb bottle for the enclosed trailer/rv.
What do you want it to do?

Finish / Brad / Pin nailers are about it. I wouldn't expect to run a wrench off of it. Keep your eye open for an aluminum tank....you can have it filled with nitrogen or air and they work surprisingly well. You can easily change a set of tires on a charge.

I picked up one for a project at work. (Used it to power a tennis ball cannon... I have a strange job.) It's a regulator designed to hang off your belt that bolts onto standard 9oz or 20oz aluminum or steel paintball tanks. Not exactly cheap: the $85 doesn't include a prefilled C02 tank.

The plastic housing is pretty cheap. In my case the rubber ring protecting the pressure gauge fell off in the first day or two. Then the tank tipped over and the bezel gauge cracked.
If you buy one you'll probably want to skip buying the prefilled CO2 tanks... it's a deal set up by Rhino (the LP gas exchange company) and the tanks are expensive compared to what they cost if you bought 'em/got 'em refilled at a paintball shop.
There's supposed to be an exchange program/discount to swap the empty Kobalt/Rhino tanks for refilled tanks at Lowes or Walmart, but the local Lowe's I bought it from had no idea how the exchange/refill worked. And be careful if you buy the pre-filled tanks at Lowe's: the first one I purchased was actually empty even tho the seal was in place
Compared to the 20lb C02 tank I'm used to, these things are -tiny- and you drain 'em super fast... but it's 2 pounds and hangs off your belt, which is be super convenient for air tools that don't need a lot of, uh, air. Like brad nailers. Or a few shoots w/ a tenns ball cannon.
They get a bit more reasonable if you can refill these off a big C02 tank w/ your basic $40 kit off of ebay:

I'll have to get the tank refilled and see how long it lasts attached to my 1/2 inch impact wrench, or if it can even refill a tire...

I sell an aluminum 20 lb CO2 cylinder with a preset regulator for approximately $160.00 out the door. Cylinder is refillable and the regulator is preset at 120 lbs.
If you want an adjustable one the price goes up about $45.00
