whatever pays the bills.. still good show though. in this sport we will take whatever exposure we can get. i also thought the VW and BFG commercials were fun to watch, nice to see how enthusiastic VW is becoming.

I agree.

Theres more to baja racing than plugging your sponsors.

For those that missed it, it will probably be replayed on Speed Channel in a couple weeks. Check your local listings and I'm sure someone on this site will post up when it is shown again. You could always buy it from the www.thebajaunlimited.com (but who wants to buy the milk when they're giving it away for free ;))

Too bad NBC didn't show the 500 this year. Last year they ran the 500 the week before the 1000 (right around this time of year too).

The Interesting Thing Is That They Quote Gordon As Saying (this Is The Last Grassroots Racing) That Is Why He Is Still Coming To The 1000. Yet They Did Nothing On Thegrassroots Racer.yes, They Showed Class 11 Racing But I Guess My Point Is That We Race A 1600 In Bitd We Spent 50.000 Plus Racing Last Year,we Are Grassroots Racer's.not But A Handful Can Afford Tt Racing. You Want To Get More Racer's To The Races Then Show The Small Guy's. Show The Classes That Some Father And Son Could Say (that Look's Fun We Should Try It!)

I thought the coverage of the race was better than last year's. However, I would really don't understand how they decide who to focus on. Pistol gets 4th place, and he gets no coverage, but they talk a ton about BJ and others who didn't do so well. No mention of Class 1 either, which is my class.

I totally agree with you Tex. about the whole "grassroots racing" Even though we are in Class 1 with a recognizable sponsor, we are a small, budget team. We had two chase trucks and we pre-ran on dirt bikes. We don't have helicopters, semi trucks, fancy chase trucks or even pre-runner trucks.

But that is television for you. They get 42 minutes of actual programing to show in a 1 hour time slot, and they have to put in only what they feel will get them the best ratings and the most interest.

not when it comes to getting it on national television, NBC nonetheless. it aint pretty but thats business. obviously, everyone who participated deserves a little time in the spotlight but what'r ya gona do. i apologize for being bold, and correct me if i'm wrong, but it' seems clear to me that its just barely entertaining enough watchin the big guys moseying around through the trails, so hows a network supposed to draw any sponsors at all by showing much of anything else? i do think that if they had more cameras and cought every piece of good head to head action of all the classes it would be much more entertining, but when will they pony up the dough for the extra cams and heli's to do that? -after the big classes draw enough water, thats when. we should sit tight and hope for the best and not be so cynical.

You are right. TT's and all that are cool....................but showing joe public can get their daily driver out there, is cooler too me and is true GRASSROOTS.

The show was good, the old school VW race footage was better! You can tell this show was to show people what was going on and to make the sponsors happy. I guess someone at NBC didnt like Pete or all the other classes that really make up the race. I suppose they have to make it appealing to the average couch potato thats siting at home with no clue...

Another funny part was one of the major sponsors was Garmin. I wonder how many of racers use Garmin vs Lorance? lol

The producer has to 'guess' who to focus on before the race. He then has his crews interview, take publicity shots of, and highlight those racers, hoping they do well.

Any one can become a producer of a TV show. Simply rent some camera's, buy some film, hire some guys to shoot the footage you want. Then edit the show, and buy the spot on NBC.

Now comes your chance to sell ad time to the advertisers. Hopefully NBC will want to buy some time to sell to their advertisers, but the rest is up to you. Hopefully you make your money back on buying the spot. That is the idea, hopefully you have some commitments before you buy your spot.

So. How many crews and cameras do you hire? Who should they interview? Can they find that person. Is he worth interviewing and is he ready? Will he be offensive? When do you buy your spot? How much are you willing to put out there? Can you sell to advertisers?

You have every opportunity to guide the TV crews to your driver and to have him highlighted. Go do it. With more channels covering our sports, the opportunities are greater than ever.

There is a reason PAB is so good at what he does (the not driving part).

I was shown crossing the finish line in my 12 car that was sweet. But for the most part the whole race is a commercial.
