Baja 1000 2002 Pre Race Report
The Pedos Viejos race team looks forward to the Baja 1000 each year. Along with the millennium race this race is of special interest to the team. After a loop race in 2001 the race will once again take its traditional route from years past and travel the length of the peninsula from Ensenada to La Paz. The picturesque coarse is a very fast 1017 miles. The overall winner of the race will finish the challenge in seventeen hours after the checkered flag drops.
This year the team will be fielding two entries in the race. The first entry will comprise a team of prior winners of the Baja 1000 and the team's founders. The team will be campaigning a 2000 Kreger Fabrication Class 12 car prepared by Rick Munyon. The list of drivers and co drivers of this entry is very impressive and experienced when it comes to racing in Baja. Jerry Higman will be the driver of record and may be a man that goes down in the record books for his first Baja 1000 win. Jerry has many Baja 1000 starts the first being a 1986 peninsula run but has yet to win the hardware. Jerry is a past winner of the 1993 San Felipe 250 in Class 10 where he finished second overall. Mitch Mitchell another man with a long history in Baja will give it a go also. Mitch is a previous winner of the 1985 Baja 500 in Class 1/2-1600. Tackling the mid portion of the race will be Ernie Castro. Ernie is the team owner of the Dale Ebberts and Ernie Castro Jr. ProDIRT Class 1 car. On the lower end of the coarse will be the dynamic duo of Jon Kennedy and Larry Smith. Jon started racing in Baja in 1975 and won both the Baja 500 and the Baja 1000 in 1983. Larry Smith is Jon's driving partner and in 1983 along with their Baja wins the team won the Score points title for Class 1/2-1600. Experience goes along way in Mexico and this team is very excited about their chance for success. The team's sponsors are Reliable Lumber,Kreger Fabrication,Inland Truss, MBC Construction, Kennedy Equipment and Flomac Inc.
In another car Will Higman will make his first solo drive attempt of the Baja 1000. He will be driving a 2002 Kreger Fabrication Class 10 car. Will has soloed the Baja 500 and the Parker 400 and thinks he will be able this accomplish this years goal. If not Derek Kreger will be waiting in the wings to finish the race for Will. As the distinguished group above Will has yet to win a race on Mexican soil. Also Will's best points finish was in 1986 win he finished second place to overall Score/HDRA points champion Jack Ramsey in Class 1/2-1600.
