The 5th race of the Code Tecate Off road series 2002 in conjuction on ZR Promotions was very succesful, the entries were 34 bikes and quads and 99 cars divided on Pro and Sportsman ranks, 25 bikes actually finished in the 5 hour limit, and in the cars division 53 crossed the finish line in the 9 hours time limit.

The weather was very confortable on the mid 90’s on a shinny morning, and the wind help the racers to keep the dust out of the course, the race course was a very technical in some sections, in other parts of the race course was a high speed like the salada dry lake, some was very nasty, rocky and the sand washes to figth the racers.

The km 28 of the Mxli-TJ higway was the main acess road, the canyon of Gpe road provide good spots to chase crews to meet their vehicles, at the fosa de asfalto access road, going to the south at the east side of the sierra la rumorosa turning to the east and go parallel to the canyon of Guadalupe road and cross to go at the 10 mile or so of the salada dry lake and then go to the north to the old Baja 1000 93 road to the north at the Puente la salada then run a lap of the northern part of the course going to parallel to the acueducto road to the check 2, at this point the course go to south running parallel to the autopista Mxli-Tj to the east and we pass the salada bridge another time and go to the finish line to complete the 64 mile course. The Pros we go 3 laps and the Sportsman and class 11 go 2 laps.

The race was divided in two early morning the bikes and quad took the start at 6:00 am to go 2 laps then the cars and trucks we start at 9:00 sharp, the last bike need to pass the start finish line before 8:40 am to go another lap, the last m/c complete the distance in alotted time was the team of Q60 of Braulio Ruiz in 4:44:17, the last Pro was the 903 of Juan Mayoral jr in 8:45:42.


In some of the race stories two or three teams have problems, the Thrusday befor the race the 904 car of Daniel Reyes broke their transaxle, in the same case Eliseo Garcia also in a two seat Chenowth from Ensenada but he was in Friday afternoon after prerunnig tranaxle too, in other case Ricardo Coronado Ford F-150 was roll over in the prerunnig acording to some spectators on thrusday Afternoon he was OK but the damage was big.

The race start at 9:00 am and some new faces at this race was the Imperial valley racers, Shawn Mc Callum in the ex-Wadell Chenowth Millenium 3.2 Acura powered, Joe Heger & Larry Mc Callum in the Jimco Type IV class 5 in his fourth in a row victory (Henderson, Primm, Jacume, Mexicali), Rick Taylor & Jimmy Nuckles in Taylor’s Ford Ranger (Nuckles said he maybe race the next Code event Mxli-SF in November in his ex-Riviera Nye Frank built 4wd Ford V-8 class 1) Coming From La Paz B.C.S. , Rodimiro Amaya in the Ex-4WD team Macpherson Class 8 Chevy, Paul Keller & Danny Ledezma in 1600, Lobsam Yee was forced to miss this race because the new Jimco two seat was finished this month acording to Mike Julson he probably test in Plaster City early October, and the transaxle of the single seat was broken in the stadium finish in the BITD BajaMex race in Ensenada one week before this race.


CLASS 1

Shawn Mc Callum was the first car off the line in the ex-Josh Wadell Chenowth Millenium 3.2 Acura powered but he cant go has far check 1, a broken transaxle was the problem.

CLASS 10

In class 10 early class leader Eli Yee was the first off the line after the Jimco of Amado Lopez / Javier Robles was not ready for the race, Yee lead the lap and he put the fastest lap of the day in 1:09:28 (56.50 mph!!!) Folowed by Arturo Honold in the Jimco ScoreLite Runnig again the Class 10’s, in Third was Luis Barragan in a Curry Fab Chasis Score Lite Car Too, the Jose Alfredo Canchola Lothringer Honda V-Tec two seat was broken Out at RM 18. After he had a battle with Arturo Honold on the Fosa de Asfalto section Arturo was closing the gap and Canchola did no let him to pass after several taps Arturo was bangin the rear of the Lothringer and finaly the car took on some rocks and the rear arm went off.

After the second lap Yee was out of the race after some engine problems in his Jimco Honda V-Tec Powered, Honold take the lead and barragan was very late after some problems and a DNF, Canchola was talking in the radio looking for the transporter he was a DNF also Luis Barragan was out of the race the transaxle of his two seater was broke, Honold on the third lap continue the strong pace and he probably leading overall but at the after check 2 one rear CV boot took away and Honold had to stop and duct taped himself to continue to the finish.

Class 8

The race was a two car race since the Ford F-150 of Benny Canela and the Ford Bronco of Juan Carlos Lopez was out of the race after serius problems, Lopez loose the transmision of the Bronco on the RM 5 and he forced to see the race as a spectator, in other hand armando Bravo in another Ford F-150 was in some problems and Rodimiro Amaya In the Chevy C-1500 (this was the 4wd macpherson but with a front redone) was leading the class after some dust and traffic on the lap 1.

Amaya continued the lead after two more laps, in the third lap was WillieValdez JR driving now the big Chevy (Valdez jr was riding shotgun of Larry Ragland in the Mark Miller Winning Trophy Truck at this year Baja 500), and he see Honold sidelined but only cruise for the win and Honold took away and passed Valdes jr in one of the nasties section on the Course Valdez said, i see Arturo out of the car and he is working on the car im’not woriem about him i only drive to the finish but i cant see him we in one of these uphills section parallel to the higway Honold Jumped in front of me, hey he is crazy but he passed me in one bad part of the course.

Amaya and Valdes jr took the win Amaya, said he like the course (he’s From Baja Calif Sur) the course had fast sections, sand washes, rocky hills, the dry lake and some technical, the truck now we prep in Ensenada at the Valdez Shop maybe i return to run two or three races next year, now we prepare for the 1000 in November.

CLASS 1600

The limited restrictor plate class showed 12 car field, in one hand the local racers dominate the first two laps after the end of the first lap Hiram Duran From Tecate B.C. in a two seat Chenowth was the leader followed by Renato Villalpando also in a two seat Jimco in third place was Danny Ledezma in the Paul Keller single seater and Jorge Sanchez in a Curry Chassis.

In the other side Alex Navarrete in the single seat Jimco was having power stering problems and the char-lynn pump was felling off and he stop for repairs at RM 42 inside the la Salada bridge, also last race winner Jose C Robles continued runnig in the back of the pack after some problems, at the end of the second lap Renato Villalpando in her Jimco Two seater leading phisically in front of Jorge Sanches and Paul Keller, in third Federico Regla in a two seat Curry chassis cruising along in his second race ever, in the back of the pack Jose Soto in his first race in 1/2-600 and Gustavo Rodriguez was fifth after minor problems.

In the third lap Paul Keller was the winner he report no problems all day long, in second Federico Regla who drove all day solo he said his rear shocks need some valving only, in third Jose A Soto in his first experience in 1600 also driving all the way.

Class 5

In the open bug class was no surprise, the duo of Joe Heger and Larry Mccallum dominate the class in the ex-Outlaw Jimco 3.2 FAT powered type IV and he come fresh after her Score’s Primm 300 victory two weeks earlier, at some point he build a lead to stop to change one front trailing arm at the third lap, in time to hold the lead over the 502 car of Michelle Gastelum and Vic Bruckmann riding shotgun, he stop at Baja Pits at RM 46 to check some noise after that he cruise to the second place some 12 minutes off the pace, Michelle did all the driving .

In third the team of Jorge Delgado did some consistent laps to take the third place after only stop for gas and a driver change, he continue taken no presure of the competition and at the finish line he took the checkered flag and when he put the first gear to leave the finish area the ring & pinion broke, fourth place Jose Gpe Cervantes was out of the race at the RM 30 after serius problems .

CLASS 7

In the open mini truck class the race starts at the RM46 under the salada bridge, Hector Salazar in a Ford Ranger was the leader phisically in front of Perry Mcneil bumping the rear of his cage he had a great duel apart only by seconds all the lap, also in another Ford in third was Chad Mcneil in a Ford Ranger and Rene Cuevas was fourth at the front of the pack also in a Ranger .

In the rear Rick Taylor was sidelined after some transmision problems, Jesus Mendez and Jose A Gonzalez was little off the pace and last race winner Enrique Guerrero was having some problems in the Willie Valdez rent-a-car Ranger also Perry Mcneil was out of the race in the second lap.

At the end of the final lap was Hector Salazar in the second race of his new Curry Fab Ford Ranger taking the win in a 14 field car and also won the overall of the race, in second was Chad Mcneil some minutes off the pace and continue amasing points to his championship this year, and in third place was Rene Cuevas From San Luis RC Son in his new Willie Valdez Fabed Ford Ranger come back to race after some year of retirement and he said the racecourse was very technical in some parts, some fast sections and some fun .

Also for second time in the year Hector Salazar store’s ‘HomeSaga’ put a special purse for the class 7 Trucks 3000 Dlls, for the 1st 1500 Dlls, 2nd 1000 Dlls and for the 3rd 500 Dlls also the class championship was to be decidec at the last race in November 8-10 Mxli-Sf.

CLASS 5-1600

The baja bug class was not an easy task to winthe competition look great at this race. , Early leader Albert Castro come down from Chula Vista to had a battle with Jason Gregory the Score Series runner up and second place of Primm 300 two weeks early and last race winner Gerardo Iribe From Rosarito,

At the second lap some kind of dissater run here after Gererdo Iribe lost his clutch cable and Jason Gregory also in the same case in both cases did’t slow then after two laps was Iribe leading and was folowed by Julian Patron in third was Mario Gutierrez and Gregory was replacing the clutch cable.
At the end of the third lap was Iribe in front for his two in a row victory with no clutch for most part of the rece he need to a push to the tech impound area, in second was Gregory closing the gap after his problem and in third Julian Patron.

CLASS 9
The swing axle gruop did’t not disapoint and a ten-car field take the green flag and some new faces was a surprise at this race, at the RM 10 Jesus Velez was out of the race with a broken tranaxle also Tom Mcadams didn’t check at 1 and he was out of the race, in other hand Humberto Solorzano was out of the race and some cars was involved in a traficc jam .

The race was lead at the second road crossing by Daniel Reyes in a two seat Raceco borrowed from Fco Fernandez the race sponsor owner of the Botica Santa Maria after thrusday prerun his J.E.F.E. two seater broke his transaxle, in second place Juan Gallo from San Felipe in his homemade single seater some four minutes in back, in third Eric Fisher in his Garibay two seater come fresh after his Score Primm 300 victory two weeks early.

In the back of the pack was Rodolfo Whilelmy in another Raceco two seater, Rodrigo Obeso in a Jimco two seater and Jose G Machado a new face in the off road scene in his Jimco single seat, this car was the old black Lacarra-Mayoral SS one of the last cars was built by John Marking at Jimco some years a go, winner of several races years a go and now was sold to Machado early in the year.

At the end of the second lap was Reyes codriver Jose A Gonzalez driving the Raceco now having a flat tire and lossing little time and Amado Mayoral take the wheel from Juan Gallo and Alberto Medina taken From Machado, at the third lap was Mayoral leading and now was Gonzales in second after another two flat tires Fisher was runnig off the pace and now Alex Zozaya driving for Whilelmy at the Rm 46 under the salada brigde Mayoral loose the lead and was sideline with a broken slave cilinder and now Medina was closing the gap take the lead folowed by Gonzalez in second with another flat tire in third Zozaya and Fisher was now in fourth.

At the end Medina got the win , he and Machado was very happy and dont worriem about new car bugs to work out in second Gonzales after his four flats tires and he and Reyes was very happy to secure the points championship of the year , in third Zozaya finished on a severe bent rear wheel and Fisher close in fourth after seriuos problems and in fifth Mayoral after repair the slave cilinder .

CLASS 7s
The stock truck class showed a strong 6-truck field, at the first lap Perry Mcneil Jr was leading the class in his Yellow Ford Ranger XtraCab. (The same paint sheme of his father truck) folowed closely by Jose Diaz M in another Ranger in third was Dave Alhes in the Makena Motorsports Black Mazda Xtra Cab, Refugio Fonseca in another ranger was only go as far to check 1 and out of the race and Enrique Loam from Tecate B.C was having the longest lap for the day in 6:59 (9.15mph).

At the second lap Mcneil Jr was leading folowed by Diaz some two minutes back and now was Manuel Rodriguez in another Ranger in third some half hour late, Dave Ahles was out of the race after some front suspension problems, and Loam did’t appear for the second lap.

At the end was Perry Mcneil Jr in the win chasing his dad footsteps in off road racing, in second was Jose Martinez after the third lap was have a some kind of problems and finished and Manuel Rodriguez only was able to get the first checkpoint of his third lap but the rear diferential housing was cracked and out of the race.

CLASS 11

The herbie class only three racers showed up at the green flag, last year points champion Miguel Mexia was the leader at the end of the first lap folowed by Alberto Ortega in his yelow bettle and in third was the team of Arturo Garcia some 20 minutes in the back

The race continued with no problems for this three teams and only need to do two laps and at the finish was Miguel Mexia cruising for the points to secure his second championship in a row, reporting no problems in his two laps only stop for a splash of fuel at the second lap, Arturo Garcia was second reporting no problems in his two laps and Alberto Ortega was third after a slow third lap caused by a blown shock arm a bent rear arm.

CLASS 14

The sportsman open buggy was a good batle since three o so drivers cant take the win, at the first lap Adolfo Ayala From Tijuana in his Two seat Curry Chassis take the lead and put the fastest lap of the sportsman ranks of the day at 1:33, Fausto Moreno come from Ensenada B.C. in his prerunner two seater to second place and in third was last race winner Armando Roman From San Diego, in fourth place was Francisco Rojas in his single seater and he stop at the Baja Pits to weld a shock tower and replace a flat tire at the end of the first lap, Guadalupe Garcia and Mario Reynoso didn’t check at checkpoint 1and both was DNF.

For the second and last lap for this class now Rojas take the lead and the other teams run a kind of disaster, now was Moreno continue runnig in second, Ayala was out of the race after terminals problems and Armando Roman the last race class winner close in third after two long laps, Hector Pimentel was Fourth in his open Baja Bug and he come at the finish line three wheeling with a broken torsion bar and the rear skidplate draggin the race course .

CLASS 15

The limited displacement bugs put a grat show all the day, because 5 or 6 teams cant win but on the paper the team of Jose Montoya from Ensenada BC was the series dominator because he win the last event and at this he dominate the class over the hard Ledezma clan, well in the action Jose Montoya was leading after Check 1 folowed by Johnny Ledezma from Chula Vista. In third was J Hector Quintero two minutes back off the pace.
In the second lap some racers ran into problems and two or three was of the race Juan Guevara, Rene Prieto, Pedro Morquecho, Edgar Delgado ran into their lap just under two hour of time, also J Hector Quintero ran with front flat tire to slow him a litle bit.
At the second lap Montoya continue his wining ways and cross the finish line in first in fact also he push so hard
To the end and he take also the sportsman overall he did the two fastest lap for the class, in second place the Ledezma team only 5 minutes back, in third was Martin Lizarraga from Tijuana some minutes back good for third, in fourth was Pedro Morquecho.

CLASS 18

In the sportsman truck class some of competition of this class was out of the race early in the morning, Raul Montiel From Tecate BC in a Chevy S-10, the last race winner didn’t check at 1st check and he was out of the race, in other hand Raul Aguilera in a Ford Ranger V-8 powered and Luis Rey in another Ranger only go a far to the first check and both was out of the race.
This reduce the race to a two truck race but Leopoldo Bramasco in a Nissan Xtracab V-6 with a Chevy Vortec engine did two long laps at the first he stop for repairs in the rear end and in the second he lost the oil cap, the gas cap and the transmision gauge and he stop to add fluids to all the truck (water, oil, trans, diff) and gas .The winner of the class was German Ramirez in a Ford Bronco II he put a great pace and he did two good laps under two hours, he report a clean race he only stop for gas and drivers change and he was the only finisher of the class.

CLASS SAFARY

In this class was a great competition all the day, at the Rm 46 Luivan Voleker in his VW with Rabbit 2.0 engine was the leader followed closely by Damian Sanchez in another baja bug in third was Miguel Rubio in his Chenowth 2 seater in fourth was Manuel Delgado in another bug and Arturo Dojaquez was off the pace after shocks problems.
In the second lap two or three teams run in to terminal problems, like Jose Carlos Castillo didn’t not cross the first check, Omar Dipp only go one lap the largest of this group (3:59), and never seen again, Jesus Lopes and Damian Sanchez didn’t appear to the second lap and this reduce to a three car battle, in the front Manuel Delgado take the lead after Luivan Volker stop to replace two broken shocks he change one of the front to the rear and also he come to mexicali to buy a new timing belt to his engine and the pulley and he come back did the repairs and cruise to finish the race,at the end Delgado was first , Voelker finish in second after repairs and Miguel Rubio finish in third ..
