Into Saturday's 7th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300
BLM changes part of course for Round 5 of six-race
2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series
For immediate release
PRIMM, Nev.-Led by six-time SCORE class champion Rob MacCachren of Las
Vegas, nearly 20 Southern Nevada desert racers, part of a field of over 125
entries, will be among the favorites Saturday at the 7th Annual SCORE Las
Vegas Primm 300.
And MacCachren, last year's SCORE Overall and Class 1-2/1600 season
point champ, will be a co-driver not only in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck
division, but also the equally high-speed unlimited Class 1.
And, as if racing on their home desert wasn't a good enough advantage,
Las Vegas' Brian Collins and John Gaughan also received the coveted pole
position in the computerized drawing for start positions for the race.
Round 5 of the six-race 2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series, America's
Foremost Desert Racing Series, will be held Saturday in Primm, Nev., 35 miles
south of Las Vegas. More than 125 vehicles, competing in 16 Pro and 2
Sportsman classes, are entered in the final segment of the inaugural SCORE
Triple Crown of Southern Nevada bonus program. Entries have come from 11 U.S.
states, Israel and Mexico.
Primarily because of safety concerns, SCORE has split the race into two
groups. Based on the type of vehicle, SCORE will run several classes starting
at 6 a.m. Saturday with the truck classes and the unlimited Class 1 getting
the green flag starting at 2 p.m.
The course is a loop of approximately 70 miles, with vehicles running in
a clockwise direction for a total of from two to 4 laps, based primarily on
the speed and size of the vehicles within the particular class. In the
morning portion of the elapsed-time race, vehicles will have an eight-hour
time limit to become official finishers while the afternoon portion of the
race will have a seven-hour time limit. The fastest finishers in both
portions of the 280-plus mile race are expected to take the checkered flag in
just under five hours.
The race course was officially altered late last week by the Bureau of
Land Management. The BLM eliminated the top eight miles of the course near
Sloan and added an additional 13 miles three-quarters into loop. The BLM was
forced to change the course when the Clark County Department of Air Quality
Management instituted a new policy of banning desert racing in non-attainment
areas of the county.
Pre-race festivities will be held behind Buffalo Bill's Resort and will
include the colorful manufacturer's midway and technical inspection, from 2
p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, of all the race vehicles. The mandatory pre-race
driver's meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Star of the Desert
Arena at Buffalo Bill's Resort. The post-race awards celebration will be held
Sunday at 9 a.m. in the Star of the Desert Arena.
On Saturday, admission is free for spectators to grandstands at the
start/finish line area in the special events compound at Buffalo Bill's
resort. This area is mandated as the only designated spectator area by the
Bureau of Land Management, the government agency which issues the permit for
the race.
MacCachren, 37, will co-drive the No. 4 Ford F-150 for Mexico's Gustavo
Vildosola in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division as well as splitting
driving time with John Marking, El Cajon, Calif., in the No. 105
Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car in the unlimited Class 1.
Also talented second-generation desert racers born and raised in
Southern Nevada like MacCachren, Collins, 39, will drive a Chevy Silverado in
SCORE Trophy-Truck while Gaughan will pilot the No. 101 Bunderson-Chevy in
Class 1.
Another Las Vegas racer who could be a factor in the race for the
overall win is two-time Class 10 point SCORE season champ Danny Anderson, who
will debut his new Jimco-Toyota in Class 1.
The classes in the 6 a.m. portion of the race and the number of laps
required will be: 4 Laps--Class 10, SCORE Lite, Class 5; 3 Laps--Class
1-2/1600, Class 5/1600, Class 9; and 2 Laps--Class 11, Sportsman Buggy,
Sportsman Truck.
The classes in the 2 p.m. portion of the race and the number of laps
required will be: 4 Laps--SCORE Trophy-Truck, Class 1, Protruck; 3
Laps--Class 8, Class 3, Class 3I, Class 7, Class 7S, Stock Full; 2
Laps--Stock Mini
Racing on their home desert, Southern Nevada racers are always strong
contenders in this race. Las Vegas' Troy Herbst is the defending overall and
unlimited Class 1 champion of the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in his Terrible
Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car.
Among the top challengers for the overall title that Herbst will have to
contend with will be his older brothers, Ed and Tim Herbst.
Ed and Tim Herbst, who won the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in the featured
SCORE Trophy-Truck division in their 750-horsepower Ford F-150 in 1998, are
very familiar with the desert terrain where they honed their gifted racing
skills. The older Herbst brothers won the SCORE Trophy-Truck season titles in
both 1999 and 2000.
The SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 is also be the final event of the new
SCORE Triple Crown of Southern Nevada. The season-opening SCORE Laughlin
Desert Challenge, Jan. 20-21, started the SCORE Triple Crown and the
inaugural SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250, July 10-14, was the middle event.
The three races include added contingency bonuses for racers who win their
respective classes in all of the SCORE races in Southern Nevada.
After the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, the final race on this year's
six-race Optima SCORE Desert Series schedule is the 35th Annual Tecate SCORE
Baja 1000, Nov. 20-23. The grandaddy of all desert racing will start in
Ensenada, on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja California in Mexico and
finish in La Paz, on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula.
