PROTRUCK RACE REPORT
“Crandon World Championship Off-Road Race”

Seven Goodyear Protrucks made the long tow to Crandon, Wisconsin and bravely stepped out of their comfort zone to take on the famous Crandon Raceway. With little time on the track, they enthusiastically took their well-prepped Protrucks into the unknown. Saturdays heat race, which was for starting positions only, was wet and slippery. The Protruck drivers carefully felt their way around for 10 laps. Jimmy Nuckles, drove for Dwight Lunkley in a tribute to Dennis Dugan, his recently deceased driver, and easily took the win. The Lunkley team was followed by Rick Johnson #43, Rob Reinertson #34, Dan Hunt #26, Dave Hunt #24, Steve Barlow # 99, and Al Hogan #28.

Sunday was a beautiful hot mid-west day. The record crowd filled the hillside and fence line. Crandon graciously agreed not to water the track and our now confident drivers anxiously took the starting line. After a heart pounding land rush start, all seven Protrucks came roaring into sight in a pack. Half way through the first lap in an attempt to make a pass, the two RJR Ford Protrucks driven by Rick Johnson and rider Brian Salee and Rob Reinertson with rider Dewey Lamora collided together in a heart stopping violent race accident. The race was red-flagged and Rick, Rob, and Brian were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment of injuries. PRO was blessed when they were released after the test results were evaluated. Rob Reinertson fractured his clavicle bone and will be wearing a sling for a while but all is well.

After the accident, the 5 remaining Protrucks lined up and put on a great show, with only 6 laps remaining to race, they ran a sprint to the finish and again Jimmy Nuckles driving for Dwight took home the victory and $7,000 with World Championship title rings for Jimmy, co-rider Jeff Shannon, and one in absentia for the late Dennis Dugan. Dave Hunt got second in the main event, followed by Steve Barlow, Al Hogan and Dan Hunt.

“Personally, I was very impressed with your drivers… they were all very well behaved, listened well, were courteous to our track workers and personnel.”
- Doug Davis, Crandon Promoter.
