SCORE International Announces Six-Race
Slate for 2003 Optima SCORE Desert Series
Season will salute 30 years of SCORE championship desert racing
LOS ANGELES--Saluting its 30-year history as America’s foremost desert
racing sanctioning body, SCORE International officially announced its
six-race schedule for the 2003 SCORE Desert Series.
Keeping the same venues as 2002, SCORE International was founded in 1973
by the late Mickey Thompson, a legendary motorsports innovator. Led since
1974 by Sal Fish, SCORE will celebrate the start of its fourth decade with a
2003 schedule in resort destinations surrounded by the most rugged and
treacherous deserts in the world.
The SCORE Desert Series, which features 24 Pro and six Sportsman classes
for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, will kick off with the popular 9th
Annual SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge in the Southern Nevada resort city of
Laughlin on the banks of the Colorado River. The season will end with the
legendary 36th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in November.
Three of the events, all mid-to-long-distance endurance desert races,
will be held once again in Baja California, Mexico, along with the three
multi-lap races in Southern Nevada. The three U.S. races will be part of the
SCORE Triple Crown of Southern Nevada, an extensive bonus contingency program.
“Next year’s six-race schedule for the SCORE Desert Series will be one
of the most dynamic in SCORE’s history,” said Sal Fish, long-time CEO of
SCORE International, which is based in Los Angeles. “SCORE has been producing
championship desert racing for 30 years and 2003 should be a great reflection
of the quality of our races. Our six races have a colorful combined history
of 107 years and we expect to add more to the legacy of SCORE International
in 2003. SCORE showcases the world’s best desert racers in the midst of
unique motorsports extravaganzas that are much more than ‘just anothar
race’.”
The 2003 SCORE Desert Series will start with the most unique and the
shortest race and finish with the oldest and most well known desert race.
After kicking off the season in Laughlin, 90 miles south of Las Vegas, it
will conclude with the always-memorable Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, which will be
held next year in the northern part of the Baja California peninsula in
Mexico.
Since its debut in 1995, the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge has helped
establish Laughlin as a unique host for special events. Thousands of
spectators converge on the city each year to watch the best of the best in
desert racing compete in a unique-format, two-day race which includes a
temorary stadium surrounding the start/finish line area and the main pits.
The SCORE classes are divided into seven groups in Laughlin, each
running as part one of seven races of two to five laps each over the
much-abbreviated 13-mile loop each day. The SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge
also includes a pre-race activity which is not part of any other race on the
schedule--the $25,000 SCORE Pit Crew Showdown and Laughlin Leap. The Laughlin
Leap and the SCORE Pit Crew Showdown are held on Thursday night of race week
at the Laughlin Special Events Park
Round 2 and 3 will both be held in Mexico. The 17th Tecate SCORE San
Felipe 250 is set for March 14-15, followed by the 35th Tecate SCORE Baja
500, May 30-June 1. Rounds 4 and 5 will both be held in Southern Nevada.
After the 2nd Henderson’s Terrible 250 on July 10-13 in Henderson, Nev. (on
the southeast side of Las Vegas), the 8th SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will be
held Sept. 13-14 in Primm, Nev., 35 miles south of Las Vegas.
The inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 was so popular this past
July, Henderson City Manager Phil Speight has authorized the Henderson
Convention and Visitors Bureau to enter into a three-year agreement with
SCORE to continue the event. The City of Henderson has never issued more than
a one-year agreement for a special event in the past.
SCORE International, started in 1973, continues to be the premier
sanctioning body in the sport of desert racing. SCORE races feature 17 pro
classes for cars and trucks in and seven more pro classes for motorcycles and
ATVs. All classes run in the three Mexico races as well as the Henderson race
in the U.S. SCORE races in the U.S. average 150 entries while the average
number of vehicles in the Mexico is 225.
