Here are some pictures that Marshall just sent me of his new "Big Oly" project. Feel free to ask any questions and Marshall will reply. I know he would like some input on how the body will look.

Kinda looks like the Sandco truck.
You have a great eye. It is a SANDCO design. It is almost the same chassis. Darren has been helpful in assisting me on this project. Hands down.........he is one the nicest and greatest I have met in this industry. Only difference between his (Franklin Racing) and my chassis, is that I wanted most of the weight to be between the 4 wheels, so the 75-80 gallon fuelsafe cell is behind the seats and only the spare tire or tires behind the axle, so tubing placement and design behind the seats changes. The "eyebrow" bar is a little different and the very front bars in front of the bulkhead come up at more of an angle.

Wheelbase is the same as the SANDCO TT at 124"-125", with a trackwidth of 91". I sat down wiith Parnelli earlier this year. While discussing the project, I did invite him to participate if he so wishes. I am leaving the door open. I would personally love to see him drive first off the line from TJ to Ensenada, for the so called "parade lap" down, for the 40th running of the BAJA 1000.

If I can sell my 1973 Ford stepside that is for sale on the featured ad page, it will be ready. But, I have decided not to beat up this TT for that race. It will be on display at off road expo in the "ROD END SUPPLY" booth and will probably be on display (if done) in the Bilstein booth, at contingency at the 1000, since I am running Blackhawks.

Have had alot of individuals call. But, none with serious cash. Anyway, I have tons of pictures I will be posting and we are working on the body right now that is being done by www.bajafabrications.com and myself. It will be a rolling chassis next week and on its way down to TJ to fine tune the body.

Sure...............why not. I can tell you right now. The few people that have seen what we have so far, said one thing. Its MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAN looking!!!!!! Contact me when you are ready. We are doing two bodys. One fiberglass and the other carbon fiber for that bling effect. Could do a hybrid kevlar/carbon fiber too. The two bedsides are 11' long and the final hood ideas are up in the air. I am going towards having the grill as one fixed unit, with the two fenders and hood as one piece that can be pull off quickly. Might make it all one piece or make the two fenders and grill one fixed piece, with a removable hood, just like Parnelli had. I think I am liking the later idea. WHAT DO GUYS THINK? INPUT PLEASE.

I am trying to keep the original lines. You really can't once you get to the front hood with the wheel up travel. I will post some pics over the weekend. We are using a ranger/Trophy Truck style hood as a mockup and to cut up.

I haven't talked to him in some time. He liked the concept and was very curious and started to give some suggestions. I think that he, like most people, assume that projects like this will never finish or finish in the short amount of time I have invested in this project. I didn't see any point to call him again untill it is done and then suprise him and everyone else.

We used a ranger/f150 TT style hood to initially use as mock up and to get measurements and then cut up. Then we would modify it, by building in, and around it, and then attaching the widened bronco grill that will have 4 HID's built into it. We are going to take it to TJ (Baja Fabrications) this week, to finalize and fine tune the body, to then make the plug. Then the mold is taken off that and then we can get our first body done, so we can hang it on the TT Bronco.

Exactly! I almost bought a 1967 Fastback, and wanted to shove a 427 cammer motor in it. And then a few years back I saw the renderings of the new Ford. Just like the 67-68 Mustangs. Lets face it...........most vehicles in the last 20 years are square looking, unlike the classic body lines of the classics from the 60's.

Here are some pics of Baja Fabrications fiberglass bodywork that was done for Holmes BITD 7 unlimited truck. I might be trying to incorporate some of the ideas from this body into the "Big Oly" TT body. Such as, the wheelwell bulges over the front tires and putting the louvers on the top, while keeping the "cowl" in the middle. I am swaying towards the fender flared "lips" as well and transfering them over to the Bronco Body as well. FREE "BIG OLY" TT SHIRT TO ALL THAT REPLY WITH SUGGESTIONS!

Horray for crappy Photoshop work, but here's my $0.01. You should try and keep the new truck looking as much like Big Oly as possible, because it is such a bad *** truck. Naturaly due to wheel-base the bed needs to be longer, not sure exactly what you're issues with the bedsides were from the previous post. The only thing I'd change on those is the "ledge" at the top of the fender, the EB has a much less pronounced styling line there, so I'd push the side of the fender out to match up a little closer, and leave that more EB looking. Then of course you have the bad-cage area, I'd push that back to match the new longer wheel-base but keep the overall profile the same. Just design in the shock mounts, rad mounts and all that good stuff, but make sure to keep it blue.
The front, I see where you're having issues with the up-travel, but you have to keep that squared off EB look going. You pretty much have to raise the fenders like the red TT above, but I think if you keep them squared off on the sides they'll still look correct. Hanneman's Jeepspeed fenders have a similar design to them, but (and I beleive they're out of production) they make some fenders for early Toyoat P/Us that have the exact lines I'm thinking of. Here they are on Tommy T's 1464, http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=530345&page=11 , I think a more accentuated "up flare" with a larger radius wheel opening would give you the clearence you need. Because of the suspension design, you'll probably have to lengthen the front of the fender ahead of the wheel.
The grill shouldn't be too bad, keep the look the same as an EB and just stretch, shrink, cut-down as needed. I don't think it's that much taller than an f-150 grill, it's just an optical illusion, because the f-150 slants it looks shorter. Then stash some lights behind the grill, with a big shiny blue oval in the middle.
Please keep the wing though, even if you have to change it up so that it makes no difference areodynamicly, gotta keep it.
Hop any of this helped. Sorry for the crappy rendering, but hopefully you get what I'm saying.

Keeping on the thinking of the original truck it didnt have anything on it that didnt need to be there. Unless the tire fits in those flares I would make them less pronounced and smoothed in to give the Baja bushes less to take a whack at. At the front the bulges would be good if it allows the rest of the body to stay lower and enhances visibility for the driver.

I like we are all thinking on the same page. I was almost thinkin gof pulling in the sides, in the middle, 2-3", so it would leave more off a TT style bulge for the fenders, and not so boxy?? The West Coast Broncos EB front fenders have a nice line. If I recall correctly after my last conversation with Dusty, they are working on rears. They're stock length of course, but WCB may be a good resource for style points. I like the idea of mixing the new with the old. A bulge will give it more of a present day style that says this thing is built to rock! .....vs. the 70's flare that looks like more of an add-on. The low body line and paint scheme will maintain the retro appearance.

My personal opinion is that I would start flaring the quarter panels out from the "rear door jam", reaching maximum bulge at the wheel wells, and then tapering back in, going all the way back to the end. The flare would have to start from nothing and gradually get wider for a sleek appearance. I think it would give it a more aerodynamic and smooth appearance and you should still be able to retain the body lines. As far as the fenders go, the best I have seen and picture in my head are the ones from West Coast Broncos as they still retain the lines. I think the hood could be updated to something with some newer style lines like the current trophy trucks have. Viewing the car from the front I'd like to see the fenders high and the hood lower for a little "meaner" look. To me, Big Oly was cool because it was new school tech. for the time it was built but still retained the "lines" of a bronco. That's what I plan to go by in my build. I don't think yours has to look like the old Big Oly, just more represent what the ideas were behind it. Keep the classic lines but create them to flow with new skool tech. Just my .02

I think it would look best if you keep it as Original looking as Posible.
If you try to make it look sleek & mean its gonna lose some of its appeal.
Of course it will be bigger than the Original, But dont flare it all out if you dont need too.
I would say in stead of flares & such maybe make the Body just a wee bit wider to allow the up travel room within the more stock looking body lines of the Original.
I suppose an Ashley style flaring would work without losing the Original lines too much.
& maybe somewhat of a drop center hood.
But keep the Body mods to a Minimum.http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/m2c.gif
& I'd feel Proud to wear one of those shirts! :D

The flairs are no good. You've got to keep the original lines, and buldge the body around the tires. It cannot have drastic changes in it or it will look like its got jeep fenders on it. The idea I had, was to make the hood and grill wider, leaving the bed sides (sides) as original as possible with slight buldges in them to tuck around the tires in compression. The truck that I invisioned would almost look square- almost as wide as it was long in appearance to really throw people off!!

Best idea in the thread. by associating the truck with Big Oly, you need to keep the look as original as possible. If you want bulges, scoops, etc. you should call it the millenium falcon tt.

One other thing, I like the idea of "flairing" the whole fender so it looks more like an EB fender, but I'd also push the shides of the cab out a few inches to minimize the flair. Adding 6-8" to the cab, so that the fenders only need to be flaired a little bit would be next to unnoticable, but really help keep the lines looking right.

No! I have been smokin' fish! Yes to all the suggestions. I'm wit you on dat. It will be a balance of old meets new, in the design department. And on the paint scheme for the fiberglass body, we will have everything the same as Parnelli's ride, but with all our sponsors logos. I will retain the original Olympia beer logo on the doors. You will probably have to put more bulge in them, but I'd also widen the cab so you don't have to go crazy on the bulge. Basically they start the bulge just like I'd do with the rear, starting from either end of the fender for a smoother look.
Their website is www.westcoastbronco.com and they are located just outside Yucca, CA.

What about flaring the fenders but leaving a little opening at the end of the flare to bleed out under-hood air pressure. Like the old imsa cars did. It would let you get wider fenders and still keep more of the slab-side body style without all the louvers of the new trophy trucks and it would be narrower at the door which is what I think you mentioned earlier. Below is a good picture of the front fender with the vent at the end of the flare, your rear fenders wouldn't need this treatment, because of the tailgate-delete/sparetire area your could carry the rear flare straight back.

I love the IMSA cars. Some of my favorites. I really like the picture of the Dirk Diggler race model you show. Very cool! Cool ideas you have. Off the top of my head, we need a little space on the side of the chassis for the mufflers, but overall I didn't want to get too radical or deviate too much from the original Big Oly. Nonetheless..............you have earned a authentic, one of a kind, limited edition "Big Oly" TT shirt. Thanks mucho.

They updated their website and took off most of the pics of the fenders but this will give you an idea of how they also kept the lines.

Looks like an ashley style fender as I mentioned earlier.
Only difference is its on an eary Bronco vs a Full size.

Whats funny............is that a guy (big race car buff/collector) few blocks from me, is really into the old corvette race cars. Owns a couple that looks like the pic you posted. He actually owns the Greenwood Corvette, that was on the cover and write up in Historic racing magazine a few years back. That "Dirk Diggler" style Corvette went 236-240mph!!!!! At Daytona or one off those big speedways, and still holds the track record!!! TRUE!!

I think you should keep it as original as you can, like what you have planed. The work to Big Oly is amazing so far. I think you should have a one piece front clip much easier working on the TT that way, it your in the desert you can pop it off and not have to worry about fighting with front glass fenders. I think you should add some type of flares to add for up travel and wheel space. On the rear, i dont think it will be as tight a fit with room. However if problems arise you may either want to raise the fenders or get the rounded rear fenders like the Bee Hive seven truck has although that take away from originality. Either way it is going to be awesome! Congrats on your TT...

Personally, I think it has to have some features (the wing and maybe the paint) but then it needs to be the "newer" model Big Oly Bronco. It can't look like the old one with the wheel base and travel so the body must be modified, just don't go TOO CRAZY. Good luck Marshall, it's coming together nicely!

Ya, the one I posted a link to only did 218 at datona.:)
If you only flare the fender out to the side but keep the horizontal lines even(hood and door and rear quarter height stays below the windshield) the bronco will look much more original than if you start adding too much of a vertical hump to the wheel wells. I'm pretty sure once you cycle the suspension with the tires mounted you'll find out that isn't possible.:(
So far the Ashley fenders that are shown earlier look pretty good.

Small and up and coming shop. His shop can do anything. The nice thing about him, is that he is very professional, and on top of things. :) He is PROACTIVE!!!! You don't have to baby sit, call him all the time and never hear back from him. He is not lazy, slow or flaky like most people in this industry. SORRY..........but its the truth.:o And I can guarranty you, he is the least expensive.:) He can do your own custom plug, molds, etc.:D He sells to ORW and I think he said, he is trying to do something with Kartek. Folks..............doing custom fiberglass work, isn't rocket science, and doesn't have to be expensive. Its just a little dirty and takes a little work. I should know, I have made (shaped mostly) over 500 surfboards. Call him and you won't be dissapointed. BAJA FABRICATIONS (ENRIQUE) CELL# 619-253-1158.

Your gonna think this is a small world, because it is. Just so happens, that the "famed" off road racer Steve Sourapas, and now CORR racer, owns Crest distribution, and it is actually located about 2 blocks away from where I am building the BIG OLY TT. For now, nothing will be put on the underside of the wing in the cab area itself. Less complicated and mo' head room. But...........knowing me:rolleyes: , I will find a way to fit and form something (panels), and attach them with fasteners. No carbon wrap. Only on the wing area. Dart 351 9.5 height deck block. The heads I am using are so efficent that you can run super unleaded. But, in a race situation 100 octane is enough. AVGAS $4.38/gal.

My pleasure. This is all about doing something cool and having fun. For me its not about going out and racing to win or beat someone. I have never thought about placing first, tenth or last, let alone finishing a race. I just like building something and wanting to try something new and then going out and driving it. I am looking forward to racing it in races/groups without all the big$$$ teams, and other trophy trucks. I don't want to hit/nerf anyone and don't want that to be done to me as well. I just want to drive against myself. I am thinking CODE, MORE, some MDR races=less days off from my normal life, cheaper to run=mo' fun.:)

You just kicked me in the butt to call Olympia again, since I haven't spoke to them in almost a year. They really are not pushing the brand. They only had $3000 in their advertising budget, and that ended up going to another brand:( . Alot of people would love to see them take an interest in this project. Hey Marshall, I am jealous of your tranny set-up. It is exactly what we intended to run in the truck that I am working on. I did pretty extensive research with the GV guys, and we have a guy with really extensive PG knowledge as well. Unfortunately...we decided to use the BIG chrisman rr-end, (thanks to the brotherhood for development of that) and the problem we ran into revolved around the lack of ratio's available for the R/P. There is (was?) only one at the time and it's not low enough to work with the PG ratios that are available (the stuff that will live anyways) unless we wanted to do 180 MPH (Which sounds cool to me!) If we would have run the 10.5 R/P I'm sure we'd have been better shape.
Your project is awesome, I can't wait to see that beast run locally- especially since we are gonna run locally most of the time!

I am curious  what motor, tire set up (size), and rearend you have (The whole combination). I am running 37's Projects with a 438ci /735hp motor that I want to be around 7000-7500 at 140mph. Believe me.........I don't care to go any faster and would want faster shifting from gear to gear. Anyway, knowing that the 1.80 gear in the PG is the stongest, I worked with and around it. And it worked out great. 37's, 1.80 PG gear, 5.14 10"ring gear, with a gear vendor. I could go with a lower ring gear, but no reason to, and remember...............the lower ring&pinion gear, the smaller the teeth, the smaller the teeth, the weaker it is. Remember you can play around with the ring gear ratios all day long. The PG trans has a few internal gear set ups you can play with as well. I'm not the expert, but MIKES TRANSMISSIONS in Lancaster or GEAR VENDORS in El Cajon can help on the math.

Oh it's a good thing...didn't mean to sound like it wasn't. I am stoked that we probably won't have breakage (knock on myself) but I still expect heavy wear with a lead foot, 750hp and 39's. I probably sound unhappy because I'm a realist when it comes to the race/prep budget and I understand what it will cost to replace r/p's (even though it's not my money!). I just would rather have had more options in the r/p dept. in the design phase, especially since I liked what Marshall is doing for a tranny package.
Marshall, we are running a 750hp 427" Donovan, 39" projects, and I had to work with a 4:56 ring gear because it's the only one Chrisman makes (or was making according to them) for the Herbst's 3rd member (after all they developed it). I was working on running a planetary set-up after the G/V, but the unit and a spare were a little out of the budget range- Now we have a top secret sequential warp drive ;) I'm still jealous of what you are gonna run.
Sorry to hijack ...Oly rules!

Be careful with those. They get really squirrelly when they go plaid.

Sounds like a great set up. The donovan block is very cool. I might of even picked up a SB2.2 NASCAR set up for cheap, and stroked it out to 400+ inches for an easy 850hp if I was you. Anyway............enough dreaming. Ahhhhhhhhhhh, where were we?? Oh! gears!!!!!!! I talked to the guys at Richmond on doing a special run for me on the 10" ring gears when they do Doug Fortins stuff, and they usually have them in 5.00, 5.25 or there abouts, 5.50 and a 6.00. What was that tranny you were running again?? DO you have the paddle shifters?? I love that stuff. MORE TT GOSSIP...........the infamous header guru "Bob Butler", came by today as usual to lift my spirits, and was telling me about Andy McMillins TT TH400 tranny problems and LS engine issues. Would be cool if they went the Powerglide/GV package..........................A message to Andy/Mark and Scott.."ITS ONLY $$$$"!!;) :p :D

Marshall, what did you end up using for Hubs and Spindles? Brakes?

I finally had time to read through this thread. (New job duties and no longer have RDC on all day in front of me :(). I used to drool over and watch the original every chance I got. It was well beyond state of the art and truly something new. It also created a wave of interest and innovative thinking that lasted for a couple of decades. Winning was everything, not a casual hobby. Some great machines and the basis of what's out there today came from that era, and Big Oly started it. Re-creating Big Oly is a great idea and it's looking really nice.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!:p I totally agree with you and DUMP. The truth of the matter, is that (I won't mention names or company names in this industry) but, there are certain sponsors that have not come through on their end. And I am left "twiddling my thumbs" for now:mad: , untill I get the parts needed to keep going. I think everyone out there knows this, but I am going to say it again. That it is standard issue, in this industry, that individuals and companies can't come through on what they promiss and when they promiss it. And believe me...............if these certain individuals don't come through, i'll be sure to let everyone on here know who it is.
You tell 'em Marshall!

Hubs (Desert Specialties) Spindles/knuckle (Desert Specialties) Uprights (Dirt Tech and Desert Specialties collaboration, still needs to be reworked). Brakes are these HUGE Outlaw 9000's I picked up on EBAY cheap, and they are new. We'll see if they work. Of course, I am one to try new things.

Thanks for the support. Believe me.....I need all I can get from getting bogged down. Mentally mostly.:D In fact...................is anybody out there (knowledgeable, creative fabricator types), that would like to come by, hang out, get your opinion on different things. Not asking for free help..................just cool people that would like to be apart of something fun. Feel free to contact me.:)

After taking in everyones opinions on the body and hood, I felt we had to "fine tune" the hood. There are pics of the body from Baja Fabrications "New shop" in TJ, then off to the paint shop. I pick it up on Tuesday and then off to the 1000. It will be on display in the Bilstein booth. OOPS! Troubles with uplaoding.:( Will get pictures up this evening.

Thanks guys! Question for all on here...........................I am doing my spare tire mount dealio, and have bounced all the ideas in my head of what to do. Robby Gordon style to doing just the old school "spinner" style tire mount:confused: . I am going towards the old school "spinner" style=easier, cheaper, no brainer, clean:rolleyes: . And it will only take a few more seconds to get the tire out. INPUT IS ALWAYS WELCOME.:)

I thought about doing a "latch" style that comes down over the top of the tire, but if you shred a tire how do you keep your wheel in? I ended up doing a spinner style for lack of better ideas. I guess you could do a "recessed" spinner and still run a latch style that way if you did shred a tire you could put a spinner on it to retain a wheel but if the tire was "ok" you could stay with the latch. Just my .02

I'm right with you. I called McKensies (wrong spelling?) and they have that cool latch dealio that the Herpies:o boys (Herbst) run as well as other trophy trucks, class 1's, etc. Its gonna run almost $600. Ouch!! :( I ain't gots it in my budget. Might have to wait. Maybe McKensies will sponsor this "Big Oly" beast?! Wishfull thinking............

Why couldn't you just build a latch-style mount that holds the rim instead of the tire? All you need is some tube, 14 or 11 ga steel, a bandsaw and a little lovin' from the tig welder. You can get the latches from McMastercar, search for "container latch", you can get the good stainless ones for about $20, so your total cost should be less than $40, and it will take maybe take 2 hours.
On a side note, I really don't understand most tire hold-downs, half the ones I see couldn't hold down a flat tire, much less a shredded one. A good wheel with a punctured BFG project is an expensive thing to lose somewhere in the desert.

I've been told that the old spinner holddowns can get loose, which then lets the wheel bang up the threads and then you can't get a wheel on or off. We use a ratchet strap, but there's got to be a better way.
Maxyedor, can you explain your idea further, please.

I was about to use that strap set up, with the 3 straps (look at Robbies Mastercraft trophy truck), but didn't know where to get one. Plus I want something more fixed, and trick looking, with a lil' bling. Yah know? A lil' bling bling ain't a bad thang..........

Just sent Marshall a PM about it, if you can wait untill next wednesday I'll be back at my house and can use my Wacom tablet, drawing in illustrater with my lap-top's little mouse pad dealy isn't working too well. Go back a couple pages and look at my "rendering" of what I thought Big Oly should look like, and you'll see why, and it gets even worse when I'm trying to do really technical drawings.

To keep it from unscrewing and for an anti-theft device i drilled a hole through the shaft and run a lock but you could just as easily run a hitch pin or something similar for racing.
If you figure out a trick latch style mount for the rim post some pics. I thought about the quick disconnect for the rim like some guys run but they do pop loose and come off and they can only be used for a specific wheel/tire combo, and they are rediculously expensive.
