7th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 next--September 13-14 in Southern Nevada
LOS ANGELES--Despite a season-low sixth place finish, Las Vegas’ Troy
Herbst has retained the Overall and unlimited Class 1 point leads after the
recent SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 desert race, Round 4 of the six-race
2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series.
With two events remaining in this year’s SCORE International desert
racing season, Herbst will now lead nearly 150 entries competing in 16 Pro
and 2 sportsman classes for cars and trucks back into his home desert for the
popular 7th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, Sept. 13-14 in Primm, Nev., 35
miles south of Las Vegas.
The youngest of the three brothers on the Terrible Herbst Motorsports
team, Troy Herbst, 36, has forged an unparalleled SCORE desert racing record
the last five-plus seasons. Since 1997, Herbst has won the unlimited Class 1
title five consecutive years including the coveted SCORE Overall point
championship in 1997, 1998 and 2000 while finishing second the other two
years in his Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car. During that
run, Troy Herbst has won his class in 12 races and his class has the most
entries at the majority of the SCORE races.
Finishing second in the season opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge
in January, third in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March and combined
with his overall and unlimited Class 1 win at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 in
June and his sixth-place finish at the SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250, Herbst
has maintained his Class 1 point and SCORE Overall point leads.
SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number
of vehicles which started the race within the individual class. After four
events, Herbst has earned 232 points.
“The Henderson race was a reality check for us,” said Troy Herbst, whose
older brothers Ed and Tim Herbst are in third place in the featured SCORE
Trophy-Truck division. “We, like most of the field, under-estimated the
difficulty of the course and it bit us real good. If we weren’t up front in
the points, the brutal heat might of caused us to look for some shade after
we started having problems. We matched things up and limped home. It was an
awesome first-time race and next year, we’ll all respect the course a whole
lot more than we did this time.”
The SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will also be the final event of the new
SCORE Triple Crown of Southern Nevada. The season-opening SCORE Laughlin
Desert Challenge, Jan. 20-21, started the SCORE Triple Crown and the
inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250, July 10-14, was the middle event.
The three races include added contingency bonuses for racers who win their
respective classes in all of the SCORE races in Southern Nevada.
In second and third in overall points in America’s Foremost Desert
Racing Series are class point leaders Steve Barlow, Temecula, Calif.
(Protruck, Ford F-150--223 points), and Kash Vessels, Tucson, Ariz. (Class
1-2/1600, Chenowth-VW--212). Fourth in overall points and second in Class 1
is Chuck Hovey, Escondido, Calif. (Jimco-Chevy--208) while rounding out the
top five is Stock Full Class leader John Griffin, Mission Viejo, Calif. (AM
General Hummer--204).
A testament to the competitiveness in the 2002 Optima SCORE Desert
Series, a total of just five points separate sixth through 10th place after
three races in the 2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series overall point standings.
The second five in the overall point standings are also class point
leaders. Sixth overall and leading Class 7 with 203 points is Craig Turner,
Yorba Linda, Calif., who drives a Ford Ranger.
Tied for seventh in overall points with 201 are: Mark Post, Laguna
Hills, Calif./Jerry Whelchel, Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. (SCORE
Trophy-Truck, Ford F-150) and Rob Taylor, San Diego (Class 5/1600, limited VW
Baja Bug. Ninth is Dan Fresh, San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (Class 7S, Jeep
Comanche--200) while 10th is George Seeley Jr., Glendale, Calif. (Class 5,
unlimited VW Baja Bug--198).
Among the other 2002 SCORE car and truck class point leaders after the
Tecate SCORE Baja 500 are: Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. (Class 10,
Jimco-BMW); Ken Stroud, Alpine, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Raceco-VW); Nick
Vanderwey, Buckeye, Ariz. (Class 8, GMC Sierra); Donald Moss, Sacramento,
Calif. (Class 3, Ford Bronco), Bob Land, Lake Forest, Calif. (Stock Mini,
Isuzu Rodeo Sport) and Arturo Velazco, Beaumont, Calif. (Class 9,
Chenowth-VW).
Leading the featured motorcycle class and the overall motorcycle point
leader is the undefeated (three wins) team of Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills,
Calif./Johnny Campbell, San Clemente, Calif. (Class 22, Honda XR650R).
Las Vegas’ Jimmy Stephensen and his co-rider Mike Cafro, Carlsbad,
Calif., lead Class 25 and are the overall ATV point leaders on their Honda
250R.
Racing on their home desert, Southern Nevada racers are always strong
contenders in this race. Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst is the defending overall and
unlimited Class 1 champion of the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in his Terrible
Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car.
Among the top challengers for the overall title that Herbst will have to
contend with will be his older brothers, Ed and Tim Herbst.
Ed and Tim Herbst, who won the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in the featured
SCORE Trophy-Truck division in their 750-horsepower Ford F-150 in 1998, are
very familiar with the desert terrain where they honed their gifted racing
skills. The older Herbst brothers won the SCORE Trophy-Truck season titles in
both 1999 and 2000.
Pre-race festivities will be held behind Buffalo Bill’s Resort and will
include the colorful manufacturer’s midway and technical inspection, from
Noon to 7 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 13), of all the race vehicles.
Post-race festivities will start with a SCORE bar-b-que in the Star of
the Desert Arena in Primm at 7 p.m. On Saturday (Sept. 14), followed by the
awards celebration at 9 p.m.
Admission is free for spectators to grandstands at the start/finish line
area in the special events compound at Buffalo Bill’s resort. This area is
mandated as the only designated spectator area by the Bureau of Land
Management which issues the permit for the race.
The computerized drawing for official starting positions, by class, will
be held Friday, Aug. 16, at the SCORE International headquarters in Los
Angeles. The fastest vehicles are expected to complete the race in
approximately 4 1/2 hours. Nearly 20 entries from the Southern Nevada area
are anticipated to be in the starting grid.
After the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, the final race on this year’s
six-race Optima SCORE Desert Series schedule is the 35th Annual Tecate SCORE
Baja 1000, Nov. 20-23, which will start in Ensenada, on the Pacific Ocean
side of the Baja California in Mexico and finish in La Paz, on the Sea of
Cortez side of the peninsula.
Title sponsors of the 7th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 are the Las
Vegas Events/Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and Primm Valley
Resorts.
