Second , Third Generation Racers Entered
Family Ties Never Stronger as Fathers & Sons, Brothers, Cousins All Entered in this week’s Inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250
Nearly 200 Cars/Trucks/Motorcycles/ATVs Set for Saturday’s Rd. 4 of six-race
2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series
HENDERSON, Nev.--Desert racing has always been about family, and
Saturday’s Inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 will be no exception as
the entry list for the first major event of this type to be held in over a
decade this close to metropolitan Southern Nevada is filled with fathers and
sons, brothers and even cousins.
SCORE International, the Los Angeles-based desert racing sanctioning
body, is producing the newest SCORE race, Round 4 of the six-race 2002 Optima
SCORE Desert Series, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series. The
motorsports extravaganza will be held on the outskirts of Henderson, Nev.,
the rapidly-expanding city on the southeast side of Las Vegas. With over
$500,000 in cash purse and contingency posting, the event is the richest
desert race in the U.S. Entries have come from 10 states, Japan and Mexico.
Among the first third-generation desert racers to compete in a SCORE
race are Jim Beaver, 21, of Parker, Ariz., who will race a Ford F-150 in
Class 8, and Harley Letner, 18, of Orange, Calif., who will drive a
Honda-powered Chenowth open-wheel desert race car in Class 10. Beaver’s
grandfather-Marion, and father-Dan, were both pioneers in the sport as were
Letner’s grandfather-Danny and his father-Marty.
The busy race-week schedule starts Wednesday with a major charity event,
and will also include a live drawing for starting positions, an off-road
trade show, Manufacturer’s Midway, three concerts, a Fireworks show, the IGT
Pit Crew Challenge, a parade of entries, and the Checkered Flag Fiesta at the
Fiesta-Henderson Saturday night. And, topping off the motorsports festival
will be the race itself on Saturday.
“SCORE is excited, grateful and a bit anxious all at the same time when
we consider the magnitude of this event and its nearness to such a densely
populated area,” said Sal Fish, long-time SCORE International CEO and
President. “SCORE is bringing the world’s greatest desert racers to the
richest desert race in the U.S., and, it will be held the entertainment and
sports mecca of the universe. Frankly, it’s a little humbling, but we can’t
wait for the green flag to drop Saturday morning.”
The schedule for the elapsed-time race will have the motorcycles and
ATVs leave the start line beginning at 6 a.m. and the cars and trucks hitting
the desert starting at 3 p.m. in the afternoon. In the morning portion of the
event, vehicles will start one every 60 seconds and two every 30 seconds in
the afternoon. All vehicles will have 8 hours to complete the 251.1-mile race.
With a unique co-sponsorship from the Henderson (Nevada) Convention and
Visitors Bureau along with Southern Nevada-based Herbst Gaming, the SCORE
Henderson’s Terrible 250 will be a 5-lap open desert race run over a
challenging course of 50.22 miles on Saturday, between Nevada State Highway
95 and the McCullough Mountains. The start/finish line, main pits and
designated spectator area, which includes free grandstand seating, will be
located on the Southeast base of Black Mountain at the South end of Horizon
Ridge Road in Henderson. The nearly 190 expected entries will compete in one
of 23 Pro classes and 5 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and
ATVs. Classes 3, 7S, 9, 11, Stock Full and Stock Mini will race 4 Laps
(200.88 miles).
The fastest vehicles in each part of the race will be expected to
complete the race in just over four hours. Nearly 30 entries from the
Southern Nevada area are expected in the final starting grid.
The official SCORE Race Shuttle service will continuously move
spectators to and from the Fiesta-Henderson and the start/finish line area
during race day (Saturday). With only limited parking in the main
spectator area at the start/finish line, the $5 SCORE Shuttle Service pass
provides unlimited roundtrip service to the area located approximately three
miles from the Fiesta, which has ample parking.
This race of firsts will also mark the first time since 1995 that
factory-sponsored motorcycle teams from American Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha
are all entered in the same SCORE race. This is the first time since that
year that SCORE has presented a race in the U.S. where motorcycles and ATVs
area also competing. SCORE’s three races held annually in Baja California,
Mexico, always have classes for motorcycles and ATVs in addition to the cars
and trucks, but American Honda is currently the only factory team that races
in Mexico.
Interestingly, all three factory motorcycle teams have at least one
rider from Nevada. Henderson’s Danny Cooper is the co-rider for Andy Grider,
Los Olivos, Calif., on one of two American Honda Red Rider entries while
Reno’s Shane Esposito and Panaca’s David Pearson will split seat time for
Kawasaki Team Green. Las Vegas’ Russell Pearson, whose father Lee is a former
SCORE motorcycle class champion, will co-ride with legendary Ty Davis,
Hesperia, Calif., for the factory Yamaha team. The Pearson’s are cousins.
The race will also include at least three sets of three brothers, led by
Las Vegas’ Ed, Tim and Troy Herbst, whose Herbst Gaming is co-title sponsor
of the race. Ed, 41, and Tim, 39, share driving duties in a Ford F-150 in the
featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Troy, 36, has won an unprecedented
five consecutive unlimited SCORE Class 1 season point championships in his
Ford-powered Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car.
The Myers clan, of Newport Beach, Calif., will have brothers Steve, 36,
Dan, 24, and Andrew, 22, in three different vehicles with family patriarch
Gary L. Myers, 64, co-driving with Dan. Dan, in a Chevy-powered Jimco, and
Andrew, behind the wheel of a Toyota-powered Jimco, are both entered in Class
1, while Steve will drive a Toyota-powered Jimco in Class 10.
Arizona’s Greer family has entered brothers Bruce Jr., 38, Glen, 37, and
Thomas 28. Bruce and Glen will co-drive a Dodge Ram in SCORE Trophy-Truck and
Thomas will drive a Dodge Ram in Class 8.
Mexico’s Gus Vildosola, 49, is one of at least five families whose sons
will also be racing Saturday. Gus will drive a Ford F-150 in SCORE
Trophy-Truck while Gus Jr., 20, is entered in Class 1-2/1600 in a VW-powered
Jimco. The Vildosolas, of Mexicali, are one of 10 teams entered thus far from
South of the Border.
Henderson’s Mark Hutchins, 47, a two-time SCORE Class 10 season champ,
will drive a Toyota-powered Jimco while his son Christopher, 17, will drive a
VW-powered Jimco in Class 1-2/1600.
Southern California’s Jim O’Neal, 55, a desert motorcycle racer who is
known more for the popular apparel company which bears his name, will race in
two age-group motorcycle classes, hoping to become one of a chosen few who
have pulled off double wins in a single desert race. SCORE rules require that
the driver/rider of record in these arduous events must either start or
finish in order to earn a class victory. O’Neal, with different co-riders in
each class, will race on separate Honda XR650R motorcycles in both Class 30
(riders over 30 years old) and Class 40 (riders over 40 years old).
Starting with a $10,000 bonus to the first overall finisher among the
car and truck classes and added bonuses for all classes, the Inaugural SCORE
Henderson’s Terrible 250 desert race has quickly become the nation’s richest
desert race. According to SCORE officials, over $30,000 in added purse, a 50
percent payback of entry fees and significant contingency posting, the final
cash and contingency prizes will pass the $500,000 mark for the new race.
Part of the added bonus purse, the first overall motorcycle finisher
will receive an added $3,000 and the first overall ATV finishers will receive
an added $2,000. For all Pro classes with a minimum ‘Lucky Seven’ starters,
the winner will receive an added $1,000 and the runner-up will receive an
added $500 from the bonus purse.
The race are part of the new SCORE Triple Crown of Southern Nevada, a
bonus prize pool and contingency program for the racers. The season started
in Laughlin and continues Sept. 14 in Primm.
Besides over 200 SCORE personnel, also assisting with staff for the
event will be the Henderson Rotary Club, who will handle the food and
beverage concessions and a fully-catered V.I.P. Tent and seating area at the
start/finish line spectator area, along with representatives from D.A.R.E.
(Drug Abuse Resistance Education), who will coordinate the start/finish line
spectator parking area.
SCORE, the Henderson CVB and Herbst Gaming, are also receiving
considerable assistance for this event from the Bureau of Land Management,
Clark County Air Quality Control, City of Boulder City, Boulder City Parks
and Recreation, and the City of Henderson.
