I'm building a new Batcave.
Gas prices are too steep...so I just moved the fab shop home!
Finally making some headway, I can't wait to get in and shorten up my commute.

Bastard!! Why you got to rub it in? Nice shop.

WoodyW

40 x 80, one side will be buried 9 feet in the ground. I've got 19+ feet to the inside peak, which will be nice for my office/mezzanine/casino/speakeasy/bar. I think I'm gonna add about 800 square feet upstairs.

Josh, it's at my house in Redlands over on the hill, How's your mom? She was a great teacher.

And Rory.......If I could rub any harder I would!:D

Seriously though...much $acrifice and planning has gone into this project and I am happy to finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for all the compliments guys.

Looks very nice! You will never leave once you have that in the back yard. I am sure you have thought of it but get some used pallet racks, they are awesome to get stuff off the floor. Plan your floor space well. I have some friends that built to big of work rooms and lost too much floor space. Watch out though, I have a 40 x 75 steel building and it collects STUFF just because you have the room. They are hard to keep clean.

My mom is good. She's over teaching I think and she wants to retire. I still hang out with Ryan Delgato so maybe we'll shoot by sometime and check things out. Your fab work is great dude. You've taken it to a whole new level

Well...It's been a while, but with everything as expensive as it is, a little at a time is all I can swing. Got a great hook-up on stucco, so went ahead and stuccoed the thing and boxed all the eaves. What the heck, right? It's green to blend into the yard (yeah right, it looks like wal-mart back there) The skylights really made the interior light nice too.
Hang the doors, Fire sprinkler it, do a little electrical and I'm in like flynn. Help! I need shop sponsors!

Boxing the eaves is nice, I don't know why more people don't do it, it really cleans it up. Is it all block for dual-purpose for the retaining wall back retaining wall? What was the difference from wood-framing? Nice shop. I think you're right across the freeway from me, literally.

Great looking shop wish I had that much room in my back yard.

WoodyW
September 9th, 2007, 22:38
Ryno- yeah the block walls double as retainers, as well as sound-proofing for those late nights when you're in the groove and don't want to quit. At the time...it was about 15-20% more than stick framing...but I would have needed a wall anyways, so that cost was absorbed. Plus I can hose it out, walls and all, with a firehose if I feel like it and never worry about water damage! You'll have to come to the grand opening BBQ Ryno! Where is your place at?...shoot me a PM

Well, it's been a little while, and finances have tightened up a hair. I can only go as fast as the wallet allows. However I've still made some progress...got my underground service in, hung my lights (30 t-8 fixtures), got the doors on, and started my service change on the house. Copper prices are killing me! Still need to sprinkler this thing, and I decided to get the floors diamond polished, stained, and densified, so I need to do that before I get any more crap moved in...which seems to be happening more and more anyways.
Then build my office on the mezzanine, then build loft storage, finish the bathroom, pour out the drive, set up pallet racking etc, etc, etc. :D

It's not Herbst's shop...but I can try to copy a couple of those bays! I even got a few Lista cabinets!

What are the prices to get the floor done? Polished floors look awesome, it was way to much for mine so I had to just seal it.

WoodyW
February 11th, 2008, 14:29
Way, way, way too much! I'm getting a nice break though:D ...But it will be nice, they caulk and cut all the seams too beforehand. I've heard prices all the way up to $7 sqf depending on what you do for color and finish.

Here's the latest...I finally got a final from the city of Redlands. I also finished my electrical service change to boost my juice. I'd been wrestling with the idea of spending so much on polishing the floors...even at the hookup price, so I decided to stain the floors instead and spend the saved money on the 100 or so yards of concrete I need to pour in front of and around the shop. Color really makes it look nice in there. The biggest difference was in painting the walls though...the light reflection was well worth the 45 (!) gallons I have been putting on the walls for the last two weeks at night. I had to roll it to get the coverage I wanted. I still need to put 20 gals. more on the last long wall, but I hate painting and I'm taking a break. Tomorrow I'm finishing up the floor, and I've got to fish some wire for some more wall boxes...but I think I'll move in this week!

I've got tons to do to make it the way that I want it, at least as far as built in material racks and benches, loft space, my office, etc...but I am so stoked to have gotten it this far. 2 1/2 years have gone by since I started this shop, but I don't owe a dime on it...being self-employed, I am pretty conservative about overextending myself- little here and a little (or lot) there will add up in the end provided you are patient. Believe me, It's all priorities. (Which will quickly be shifting to the house my wife expects to be at least half as nice as my shop.)

Best part is that now I can be around my 10 wk. old and my 2 1/2 yr. old boys a whole lot more now.
