A Black Sports Commentator's Perspective
Time for Jackson, Sharpton to Step Down
Pair See Potential for Profit, Attention in Imus Incident
By JASON WHITLOCK
Sports Commentary

I’m calling for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, the president and vice president of Black America, to step down.

Their leadership is stale. Their ideas are outdated. And they don’t give a damn about us.

We need to take a cue from White America and re-elect our leadership every four years. White folks realize that power corrupts. That’s why they placed term limits on the presidency. They know if you leave a man in power too long he quits looking out for the interest of his constituency and starts looking out for his own best interest.

We’ve turned Jesse and Al into Supreme Court justices. They get to speak for us for a lifetime.

Why?

If judged by the results they’ve produced the last 20 years, you’d have to regard their administration as a total failure. Seriously, compared to Martin and Malcolm and the freedoms and progress their leadership produced, Jesse and Al are an embarrassment.

Their job the last two decades was to show black people how to take advantage of the opportunities Martin and Malcolm won.

Have we at the level we should have? No.

Rather than inspire us to seize hard-earned opportunities, Jesse and Al have specialized in blackmailing white folks for profit and attention. They were at it again last week, helping to turn radio shock jock Don Imus’ stupidity into a world-wide crisis that reached its crescendo Tuesday afternoon when Rutgers women’s basketball coach Vivian Stringer led a massive pity party/recruiting rally.

Imus’ words did no real damage. Let me tell you what damaged us this week: the sports cover of Tuesday’s USA Today. This country’s newspaper of record published a story about the NFL and crime and ran a picture of 41 NFL players who were arrested in 2006. By my count, 39 of those players were black.

You want to talk about a damaging, powerful image, an image that went out across the globe?

We’re holding news conferences about Imus when the behavior of NFL players is painting us as lawless and immoral. Come on. We can do better than that. Jesse and Al are smarter than that.

Had Imus’ predictably poor attempt at humor not been turned into an international incident by the deluge of media coverage, 97 percent of America would’ve never known what Imus said. His platform isn’t that large and it has zero penetration into the sports world.

Imus certainly doesn’t resonate in the world frequented by college women. The insistence by these young women that they have been emotionally scarred by an old white man with no currency in their world is laughably dishonest.

The Rutgers players are nothing more than pawns in a game being played by Jackson, Sharpton and Stringer.

Jesse and Al are flexing their muscle and setting up their next sting. Bringing down Imus, despite his sincere attempts at apologizing, would serve notice to their next potential victim that it is far better to pay up than stand up to Jesse and Al James.

Stringer just wanted her 15 minutes to make the case that she’s every bit as important as Pat Summitt and Geno Auriemma. By the time Stringer’s rambling, rapping and rhyming 30-minute speech was over, you’d forgotten that Tennessee won the national championship and just assumed a racist plot had been hatched to deny the Scarlet Knights credit for winning it all.

Maybe that’s the real crime. Imus’ ignorance has taken attention away from Candace Parker’s and Summitt’s incredible accomplishment. Or maybe it was Sharpton’s, Stringer’s and Jackson’s grandstanding that moved the spotlight from Tennessee to New Jersey?

None of this over-the-top grandstanding does Black America any good.

We can’t win the war over verbal disrespect and racism when we have so obviously and blatantly surrendered the moral high ground on the issue. Jesse and Al might win the battle with Imus and get him fired or severely neutered. But the war? We don’t stand a chance in the war. Not when everybody knows “nappy-headed ho’s” is a compliment compared to what we allow black rap artists to say about black women on a daily basis.

We look foolish and cruel for kicking a man who went on Sharpton’s radio show and apologized. Imus didn’t pull a Michael Richards and schedule an interview on Letterman. Imus went to the Black vice president’s house, acknowledged his mistake and asked for forgiveness.

Let it go and let God.

We have more important issues to deal with than Imus. If we are unwilling to clean up the filth and disrespect we heap on each other, nothing will change with our condition. You can fire every Don Imus in the country, and our incarceration rate, fatherless-child rate, illiteracy rate and murder rate will still continue to skyrocket.

A man who doesn’t respect himself wastes his breath demanding that others respect him.

We don’t respect ourselves right now. If we did, we wouldn’t call each other the N-word. If we did, we wouldn’t let people with prison values define who we are in music and videos. If we did, we wouldn’t call black women bitches and hos and abandon them when they have our babies.

If we had the proper level of self-respect, we wouldn’t act like it’s only a crime when a white man disrespects us. We hold Imus to a higher standard than we hold ourselves. That’s a (freaking) shame.

We need leadership that is interested in fixing the culture we’ve adopted. We need leadership that makes all of us take tremendous pride in educating ourselves. We need leadership that can reach professional athletes and entertainers and get them to understand that they’re ambassadors and play an important role in defining who we are and what values our culture will embrace.

It’s time for Jesse and Al to step down. They’ve had 25 years to lead us. Other than their accountants, I’d be hard pressed to find someone who has benefited from their administration.

Another little item that the media conveniently "forgets" is that jackson isn't really a reverend. He joined the school basically to avoid getting a job or going into the service, went for a couple of classes and dropped out. Somewhere along the way he decided he was ordained, and the sheep (excuse me, I mean the media) has called him "reverend" since then. And the day that King was assasinated jackson was not actually with him. He had been told to F off by King and his family because they knew even then that jackson was trouble. He was being sent home the next day, never to be seen by King again. After King was shot the real media (network tv) showed up to cover the story. King's family were understandably too upset to want to go on camera, but jesse jackson seizes the moment and jumps in front of the camera. Funny thing is that A DAY AFTER THE SHOOTING he is conveniently wearing clothes covered in King's blood even though the record shows that he was downstairs in his motel room at the time King was shot on an upstairs balcony.

Maybe this question is off topic but it has been bothering me for some time now.

How come everytime some idiot sticks his foot in his mouth and says some dumb racial comments (Imus and Kramer recently), they HAVE to beg for forgiveness from Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. I mean, I know they are leaders in the black community, but who gave them the power to forgive? shouldn't they ask for forgiveness in a public address to the entire black community and not these two individuals?

As addressed here, not everyone in the black community considers these two guys their representative.

Great book. Every fact is documented and proven. Like the time when Clinton went to him to be forgiven and counseled for the monica lewinskank scandal, while coincidentaly jackson was paying off the woman that had just given birth to his illegitimate kid. Oh, I'm sorry, jackson didn't pay her off, instead he had his rainbow coalition pay her off. See, she's a lawyer, (what an irony, a lawyer being screwed by jesse jackson instead of the other way around) so she is put on a $5k a month retainer forever, in exchange for basically nothing, since she lives in Baldwin Hills (L A), while jackson lives in Chicago. The punchline is that your taxes pay the operating budget of the rainbow coalition.

This is an injustice of epic proportions, so much for free speech in this country. I guess as long as you stick to insulting the President, and degrading America in general, you are safe. I don't even like Imus but this is just plain wrong.

i reallly don't think it was. but every time somebody says anything negative towards someone else of a different race it's considered racist apperantly. Especially if the person is white. people need to grow a pair really. He's not dropping N bombs like kramer.

Another big double standard that needs to be brought out before the media moves on to the next "Big Story" is the fact that Sharpton and Jackson have yet to apologize to the Duke Lacrosse players. If they hadn't jumped in front of the camera like they always do then the DA wouldn't have had a reason to think railroading them would get him re-elected. How come if a white person makes up a pity story about being violated by "some black guy", like the runaway bride last year, they get the book thrown at them and are dragged through the media mud, but this nappy ho that accused the Duke players has only had her name and face shown on one station?

These double standards, reverse discrimination, etc. need to end. The state of our Union is not sustainable.

Imus WILL be back in due time probably on satellite radio where he can say whatever the hell he wants this time with just a little less than his orginal 50 million dollar contract. The media serious needs to move on from this story. I think its funny that this "Imus" coverage overshadowed the baby drama circus that has followed Anna Nicole and her 10 or so men that have come out claiming fathership. So what does next weeks media network circus have in store?

If this was about some black radio host talking about white women no one would care. Look at the black comics and how they talk about white people. There is no contreversy about any of that. Now look at how white comics talk smack on black people. Oh wait, they don't. This is because they are afraid of going through this whole media bullplop. Guys like Carlos Mencia talk crap on anyone and everyone and people just laugh it up. Would people laugh so hard if he was white?

Brandon_Charley
April 14th, 2007, 20:15
It all comes down to freedom of speech, the guy had a multi million dollar contract because people listened to him, who are "they" to tell us what we can and can't find entertaining. Notice how when they spin this whole thing into stopping black rappers and comics from saying "offensive" things, they don't say anything about them calling whites crackers and honkys, and if we complain we're oppressing them "again". I happen to find the movie "Undercover Brother" pretty entertaining, but in the grand scheme that thing is incredibly offensive, what about "White Chicks" didn't the film industry ban black face? How is white face ok?

It's reverse discrimination, it's reparations, it's a double standard, and basically their will come a point when someone stands up, but the Sharpton's and Jackson's of the country are smart enough not to call out the people will stand up to them because they are basically bullies. I wan't to see them call the dogs on someone like Bill O'Reilly, I think that would be a turning point in this whole thing.

There was a DJ by the name of Crazy Kid here in Phx that was fired after Katrina because he said that people were stupid in NO for not getting out of there when they could have, and they should have tried harder. He is white, obviously and said that if it were him that he would have done everything in his power, legal or not to get him and his family out of there at whatever costs.........

I am so sick of the whole double standard and the whole I still owe you for owning your great great great grandparents and you deserve reparations BS. Get over it its been a LONG time. We are all getting a chance to make something out of ourselves. Do blacks really think they would get these same chaces in Africa? If so go back.... Sorry for the rant, but I didnt even listen to Imus but its not right, and he should sue Jackson and Sharpton for degrading his character..

Oh and another thing, now that these Duke boys had all of the charges against them dropped, where is sharpton and jackson taking back what they said about them? Total BS.

Why should he apologize? He obviously meant what he said or he wouldn't have said it. To apologize wouldn't change anything. He should just be more cautious about what he says.

Like most people here I neither know nor care about Imus, but he really missed an opportunity when he met with sharpton. Anyone at his level in the media should understand the rules of engagement. The rules are: there are no rules, you don't need to be honest or accurate, but you need to entertain your core audience at all times. So rather than have sharpton come in and ask for his forgiveness (which is playing his game by his rules) Imus should have locked him in the booth and shown rap videos at 200 decibels while reading the criminal records of rap "performers". He would still lose his job, but he would be a hero to his audience..

There is a company in Florida that will take a blood sample and tell you what percent of what race you are. They do it mainly for police so they can get an idea of who they are looking for. Well people you would think are 100% black actually are like 30%, people who think they are not black at all have some in them. This is true I know someone that had his blood tested as an example. So I want to see some of these guys get tested to see what % black they are. It would be interesting. I would also like to see some of the Indian tribes do it. I mite go do it and see if it is not just my grandfather that has enough to go live on the res.

By the way the test runs about $1000

I think he should get the money. In his contract it stated that he would be warned before being fired. When "Reverend" Sharpton decided that it was his duty to get Imus fired, the station let him go. That sounds like a breach of contract.

I also saw on the news today that the "Reverend" has now turned his sights on rap music. This guy is rediculous. How much longer is the black community going to let this jerk off speak for them?
