The BLM has a Subaru powered Funco sand car. That goes around the boundaries of Glamis and Ocotillo Wells. I have pics somewhere around here.....

i remember seeing a thread on this one here already. I believe it's the one where prez bush visits yuma and gets a ride in one of these. there should be a closeup of it.

I seem to remember seeing one that had the passenger side open so they could transport somebody on a backboard.....wonder if it's the same one, or similar.

The San Diego Sheriff's Dept. has a buggy with the attachments for a backboard. I believe it's built on a Chenoweth frame. The buggy is part of the Off Road Enforcement Team and is used out at Glamis and Ocotillo. A few reserve deputies came up with the idea when they responded to vehicle and riding accidents and had no vehicles suitable for reaching the injured persons. They applied for and received a Federal grant to get the vehicle built.
As far as getting a job driving this, become a Sheriff Reserve Deputy (No pay) and take the state mandated training course.

If someone had a broken back or some serius trauma wouldn't it be worse to take them on a bumbpy ride? Doesn't a heli make more sence.

On the off-season have I seen a BLM Funco at a shop in Fontana. Next time it's there I'll try and get some pics.

sure does but how do you know they have a broken back until you get out there in your sweet rail that was paid for by us?

True, but there are times depending on the terrain i.e.(Dunes or a bowl at Glamis) you probably don't want to land a helicopter. You transport them to a nearby LZ. As far as bumpy, I'd rather be moved in a long travel buggy than a close to stock Bronco or Blazer. When I last saw the vehicle, I offered some suggestions to them on how to improve the protection of persons being transported, but I don't know if they implemented any or not.
Hitman,
I can't speak for IV Sheriff's or BP, but the money used to pay for our buggy came directly from money confiscated from drug dealers,at a cost considerably less than what most people pay for a sand rail nowadays. So unless your a drug dealer (Which I doubt) "us" isn't applicable. We had companies and people step up and volunteer time and parts to put this all together on a limited budget.
Not a bad deal if it helps you, your relatives or friends get the help they need ASAP after an accident

i think i worded it wrong, i have no problems at all with the gov. spending tax money on these types of things. if it is drug money paying for it then its even sweeter.
i think that they actually need more rails and such for
1) medical emergencies
2) to catch up with all the D-Bags out there giving our sport a bad name.

Well said. The Moss Brothers donated a big chunk of change to San Bernardino Cty. for a buggy to be used at Dumont. Good people

Last weekend at glamis there was an extreme sand car meet. Me and my friend were sitting out on top of a bowl just taking a break when we see a sheriff buggy coming right at us. Neither of us had flags on our bikes and kind of freaked out that he was coming at us, when he got to us he asked where the extreme group was. Turns out extreme built the buggy for them and they were taking it to the photo shop for the group.

I like the plates "Dirt Cop". They need to get that thing registered, that way we can see it in a high-speed pursuit on TV some day. I can just see OJ's Bronco running from twenty Chenowiths and Funcos on the freeway.

Photos were taken at 1 of 1st the CORR races in CV.
My buddy and I were crusing to the hot pits for access to the track and he hopped in the drivers seat with the haed set on. The cop was not around but did show up as we were goofing off. I got him to take a few more with me as the co-dawg.
I believe the car was purpose built for the "Offroad Enforcement Team", reason being see the sponsor decals below the EMT decal.
