Vey nice work but why? Why put all that money into a rhino. for the cost that thing must be bringing you could easily be into desert racing. Its cool and its going to be the fastest rhino out there.

Nice racer...but at what point can it still be called a Rhino???

that motor is air cooled how hot is that going to get, plus you can't run a honda motor, in a Yamaha body for score!!!

Have you got the drive shaft setup worked out? We looked at putting a VTX motor into an IRS trailing arm car, but the logistics of doing that were much more challenging than using a chain drive. Ended up running a ZX-14 motor with a chain to a Jeffco reverse box. Using the Currie rear end will definetly help, but I would still like to see your setup.

partybarge_pilot
March 19th, 2007, 22:45
Uhhhh, why is you rear end upside down?

Also, a 9" housing with a 12 bolt drop out from strange would have been lighter/more effiecient and given better ground clearance (than a 9").

You may also have pinion oiling problems, look at the mods on the High 9's.

matt_helton
March 19th, 2007, 23:02
that 8" housing is light, real light. and i think Ray has the oiling issue under control. i saw it the other night and its gonna be pretty cool when done.

Thats exactly what I was thinking....

its still gonna have a rhino body on it, and the chassis which is only 10% larger still has the shape and tube layout of a rhino. so not a rhino, bit it will resemble one. :)

ok, ill stop talking now.

The housings aren't much lighter than a stock 9. Also, it's the 3RD member thats the heavy piece.

PS, if this is the hot new rhino/truggy set-up, I've got a few spare 8"er's laying around........

Isn't that a requirement/rule? To start with a stock rhino frame rail? My neighbor (FasterCaster) is building a "Trophy Rhino" and says the stock frame rails are required.

you could by a nice used 1/2 or 5/1600 for the price of that and have alot more fun IMHO.

Who cares if you could build something else!!! It's what the guy wants to build and will probably be fun as hell so more power to him/them!!!! Let's see video when it's done!!! Hell, maybe he wants to just wipe up on all the rhinos in the dunes... Who cares, he's gonna have fun doing it!!!

i agree. who cares.it doesnt matter to anyone but him, to build and use it no matter how he wants or how much he wants to spend on it. thanks for sharing your project.keep coming with upsdates with your project.

recreation or not that doesn't help the fact that that motor is Air cooled, how are you going to deal with the heat issue?

Travisfab

ITS WATER COOLED!!!

I honestly dont see how this would cost as much to build as a truck.

Bulldozer
March 20th, 2007, 12:09
Actually this probably wouldn't, but when you start out with a $10,000 rhino in the first place and build it up its REALLY pricy.

This is probably about the best bang for your buck if you wanna go fast and have a smooth ride. (other then the short wheelbase) So, I retract my statement that you could build a truck for the same amount of money.

BTW
Nice lookin' toyota in your avatar TravisFab

I admire the fab work and creativity but I wonder when the first Rhino plastic will be streteched to fit around a Geiser Brothers TT chassis.

I've got a VTX 1800 and I'm pretty sure the big old radiator out front is the main reason none of the harley guys ever wave back.:D

March 20th, 2007, 14:45
what kind of power do those motors put out?

Bulldozer
March 20th, 2007, 15:21
With a quick google search I came up with numbers between 95 and 100hp.

450grl
March 20th, 2007, 19:40
My previous CBR engine in my rhino put out over 100hp.....but it didn't hit the power until about 10500 RPMS......the v-twins will put out power around 6000 rpm, and will have twice the torque as my CBR.....should be a kick in the pants....we'll have to race your v-twin against my new v-twin sometime soon! ;) But I will still have longtravel rhino suspension to contend with, so it's got to be somewhere fairly smooth - lol!!! :D When is your estimated completion time for this? :)

racer_dude
March 20th, 2007, 19:54
well.. i can see where this is going...

you have to look at it like everything else in the desert... a protruck doesnt have anything to do with its stock counterparts, example. our tundra only has a tundra motor and body, nothing to do with an actual toyota more or less...

none of the trophytrucks have stock anything..

i think it will be an awesome rhino but not my style... ill keep mine

why did you buy a rhino, all you should of oredered was the plastics! very nice though, i bet you wouldnt spill your beer going 50 down the whoops!

Definitely looks like fun, and will probably look at least as much like a Rhino as a TT looks like a stock pickup. Certainly safer than a std. Rhino.
PS air cooled motors are generally cooled with... AIR! so what's the problem again?

well we all know its air and water cooled now. i think the concern was that the placement of the motor might not allow enough air to get to it. when that in a bike it has plenty of airflow.

P.S. aircooled motors are oilcooled as much as aircooled....

It looked to me like the only thing left to go on the front was going to be a tube bumper that would leave the motor fins pretty darn available to airflow. The builder seems to be pretty savvy so I doubt cooling was completely overlooked. That's all I was sayin'.

Those fins have nothing to do with cooling that motor. They are only a bolt on piece that's on there to give the aircooled look for the cruiser image. I'd take as much stuff off that motor to lighten it up........it's HEAVY!!!!

Currie.....what do you plan on doing for the engine management system???

you sure those fins unbolt, even on the cylinder. its no big deal but im sure they do help cool it there like a heat sink IMO. i looked at the pictures and looks like there part of the head and cylinder. like i said not a big deal, just curious.

I second that, its definitely water cooled and would also talk off the covers.

I want to see how the exhaust pipes come out, that should be a trick.
