Steinberger leads SCORE Trophy-Truck
Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst Assumes SCORE Overall, Class 1
Point Leads in 2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series

Inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 next--July 10-14 in Southern Nevada

LOS ANGELES--Regaining his position as the most dominant SCORE desert
racer since 1997, Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst has assumed the overall point lead
after the recent Tecate SCORE Baja 500, Round 3 of the six-race 2002 Optima
SCORE Desert Series.

Starting the second half of the SCORE racing season, Herbst will now
lead nearly 200 entries competing in 24 Pro and 5 sportsman classes for cars,
trucks, motorcycles and ATVs to his home desert for the much-anticipated
Inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250, July 10-14 in Henderson, Nev., on
the outskirts of Las Vegas.

The youngest of the three brothers on the Terrible Herbst Motorsports
team, Troy Herbst, 36, has forged an unparalleled SCORE desert racing record.
Since 1997, Herbst has won the unlimited Class 1 five consecutive years
including the coveted SCORE Overall point championship in 1997, 1998 and 2000
while finishing second the other two years in his Ford-powered Smithbuilt
open-wheel desert race car. Over the last five-plus seasons, Troy Herbst has
now won his class in 12 races and his class has the most entries at the
majority of the SCORE races.

Finishing second in the season opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge
in January, third in the Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in March and combined
with his overall and unlimited Class 1 win at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500 on
June 1, Herbst has increased his Class 1 point lead while taking over the top
spot in the chase for the SCORE Overall point crown.

SCORE points are determined both on final finishing position and number
of vehicles which started the race within the individual class.

“We are in the midst of an incedible run in the desert,” said Troy
Herbst, whose older brothers Ed and Tim Herbst are in third place in the
featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division. “If a player in one of our casinos was
having as much success as we’ve had in SCORE races the past 5 1/2 years, we’d

have to give them the deed to Terrible’s. We are truly excited about
sponsoring and racing in next month’s SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250.”

With a strong 23-vehicle field in Class 1 at the Tecate SCORE Baja 500,
Herbst, with the help of some driving assistance from Baja racing legend
Larry Roeseler, impressively won Class 1 by more than seven minutes to
outrace all four-wheel vehicles and all but three motorcycles among the huge
field of 258 starters. He now has 183 season points. There were 132 official
finishers in Round 2 of America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series.

In second through fifth in overall points are class point leaders Steve
Barlow, Temecula, Calif. (Protruck, Ford F-150--162 points), Allan Gregory,
Alpine, Calif. (Class 5/1600, VW Baja Bug--160), Kash Vessels, Tucson, Ariz.
(Class 1-2/1600, Chenowth-VW--149) and Nick Vanderwey, Buckeye, Ariz. (Class
8, GMC Sierra-148).

Amazingly, a total of just two points separate sixth through 11th place
after three races in the 2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series overall point
standings. Sixth overall and second in Class 1 with 145 points is Dale
Ebberts, Canyon Lake, Calif., who drives a Toyota-powered Jimco.

Tied for seventh in overall points with 144 are class point leaders,
George Seeley Jr., Glendale, Calif. (Class 5, unlimited VW Baja Bug) and Dan
Fresh, San Juan Capistrano, Calif. (Class 7S, Jeep Comanche).

Currently in a three-way tie for ninth in overall points with 143 each
are Mark Hutchinson, Henderson, Nev. (Class 10 point leader, Jimco-Toyota),
Chuck Hovey, Escondido (third in Class 1, Jimco-Chevy) and Al Hogan,
Columbus, Mont. (Second in Protruck, Ford F-150)

Among the other 2002 SCORE car and truck class point leaders after the
Tecate SCORE Baja 500 are: Ken Stroud, Alpine, Calif. (SCORE Lite,
Raceco-VW); Craig Turner, Yorba Linda, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger); John
Griffin, Mission Viejo, Calif. (Stock Full, AM General Hummer); Donald Moss,
Sacramento, Calif. (Class 3, Ford Bronco), and Bob Land, Lake Forest, Calif.
(Stock Mini, Isuzu Rodeo Sport).

Leading the featured motorcycle class and the overall motorcycle point
leader is the team of Steve Hengeveld, Oak Hills, Calif./Johnny Campbell, San
Clemente, Calif. (Class 22, Honda XR650R).

Las Vegas’ Jimmy Stephensen and his co-rider Mike Cafro, Carlsbad,
Calif., lead Class 25 and are the overall ATV point leaders on their Honda
250R.

With a unique co-sponsorship from the Henderson (Nevada) Convention and
Visitors Bureau along with Southern Nevada-based Herbst Gaming, the SCORE
Henderson’s Terrible 250 will be a 5-lap open desert race run over a
challenging course of 50.22 miles on Saturday, July 13, between Nevada State
Highway 93 and the McCullough Mountains. The start/finish line and only
designated spectator area will be located behind Black Mountain at the end of
Horizon Ridge Road in Henderson.

The busy race-week schedule includes a major charity event, an off-road
trade show, three concerts, a Fireworks show, a pit crew challenge, and a
parade of entries.

Starting with a $10,000 bonus to the first overall finisher among the
car and truck classes and added bonuses for all classes, the race will be the
nation’s richest desert race. According to SCORE officials, over $30,000 in
added purse, a 50 percent payback of entry fees and significant contingency
posting, the final cash and contingency prizes will pass the $500,000 mark.

Part of the added bonus purse, the first overall motorcycle finisher
will receive an added $3,000 and the first overall ATV finishers will receive
an added $2,000. For all Pro classes with a minimum ‘Lucky Seven’ starters,
the winner will receive an added $1,000 and the runner-up will receive an
added $500 from the bonus purse.

Instead of the normal computerized drawing for starting positions in
each class being held several weeks prior to the race, a live drawing will be
held Thursday of race week (July 11) at Terrible’s Hotel/Casino. Entries will
receive their vehicle numbers in the order received and all entries received
by SCORE by June 29 will be included in the live drawing. Late entries will
receive the next available vehicle number and start position.

The schedule for the elapsed-time race (July 13) will have the
motorcycles and ATVs leave the start line
beginning at 6 a.m. and the cars and trucks hitting the desert starting at 3
p.m. in the afternoon. With vehicles starting two every 20 seconds, all
vehicles will have 8 hours to complete the 251.1-mile race. Most classes will
cover 5 laps over the 50.22-mile course while the slower classes will be
required to cover four laps (200.88 miles) to become official finishers.

The fastest vehicles in each part of the race will be expected to
complete the race in approximately 4 1/2 hours. Nearly 40 entries from the
Southern Nevada area are expected to be a part of the first major desert race
held this close to metropolitan Las Vegas in over a decade.
