FABTECH Motorsports Baja 500 Press Release
2002 is proving to be easy for six time class seven champion Craig Turner to repeat his 2001 SCORE International Championship on paper, physically it is proving an up hill battle. The FABTECH Motorsports team started the 2002 season by taking the Laughlin Desert Challenge win. The SanFelipe 250 saw a commanding lead to be destroyed by broken steering components. FABTECH engineers were on hand to fix the problems and to take Craig to a second place finish with six minutes to spare before race time expired.
The third race of the season, The Baja 500, followed in the same fashion. The race started with Craig reeling in the lead truck. At mile marker 7, Craig was on the tail of rival Rick Taylor, due to heavy dust and no visibility, Craig slid onto the side of a fifty foot cliff. After race traffic cleared, local Ensanada citizens pulled the FABTECH Ranger up the cliff. Craig in championship style drove the FABTECH Ranger back into competition catching the lead 7 trucks. Starting up to Mike's Sky Ranch, a water crossing drowned out the ignition system and left the FABTECH Ranger stranded in a sand wash. After an hour and a half of down time, Craig started on a blistering pace. Tim Cecil was scheduled to take over driving responsibilities at Urapan. Craig had knocked off an hour on the lead truck. Tim sent Craig on to chase down the lead truck. The lead truck was in striking distance with 90 miles to go. Craig had the lead truck in his sights when the passenger side lo! wer control arm broke at mile marker 455. FABTECH engineers again came to the rescue and patched up the badly wounded truck with some mid-night special welding skills. Craig limped the FABTECH Ranger to a second place finish with twelve minutes to spare before race time expired.
Craig stated that domination and wins have always been a factor for our race team. The last two races have proved why that is so. The good Lord has blessed us greatly, now he is throwing a couple of curve balls at us to see how we react. The team has proved to be a solid core, a well oiled machine, the guys were on top of every negative incident and made it positive. Dave Winner, CEO of FABTECH Performance Suspensions has brought allot of support to the team by actually placing his engineers in the racing arena. It's great to have a hands on sponsor and not just a check writer. We have a handle on the truck and know where the weak links are. The remaining season will be, shall I say, "Game On."
