Hey,
Was wondering if anyone could tell me exactally what cut and turned beams are for 4x4's or if there is any other way to run a coilover application on a 4x4 Explorer. Pictures and other posts would be greatly appreciated and any other info. on what size shock to run etc would work good.
Thanks,
Big D

It means that the ball joint is moved out so that it can be aligned for camber. A 14" coilover should work good. Contact Jerry and he can give you the low down on the explorer.

Definately call Jerry at Camburg. They have a set of tig welded beams on an explorer as we speak. It runs a 14" coilover as well as a 16" bypass shock. They are 3.5" wider perside. Im waiting for my set to be built but they take a while to fab up. Im sure jerry has some pics he could post as well.

You really don't need a 14" coil-over unless you run wider TTB's.. They will work but you won't use the whole shock and it is hard to find room for them. I have 14" and they hit the bottom of my hood. I only got them because I do plan to go wider... much wider..
No matter what you do you are limited by the front driveline and the axle going to the right side. You will be happy with 12" travel (which you can get with a 10" shock). You can also get adjusters to correct the camber/ caster if you don't get to wild with the travel..

you can cut and turn them at the ball joint or at the pivot point. As far as coilovers go, i think a 2.5 would be fine. here's some pics there not that good of pictures but they are both turned at the pivot point http://www.geocities.com/dezertrat0/pino2_copy.jpg the green hoopty is mine and the attachment is a coilovered explorer

The Explorer has a 12" coil-over and a 14" by-pass shock. The beams are 4" wider per side. This explorer gets 21" of travel. Next on the explorer is a swing set steering and a pair of custom made aluminum hubs with 12" rotors and 4 piston calipers.
Here are a few Pics.

my little brother posted this one guys, he uses my sn every once in a while. We are planning on starting a 4x4 explorer project soon though. I have a few questions of my own. Doe the cut and turned beams widen your front end at all? On the baja concepts website it offers cut and turned beams that widen the stance an 1 1/2" for 350 or 400 bucks... does that sound right??? I asked a couple of people and they said they couldn't think of why it would widen the stance by cutting and turning the beams. we are planning on running the slightly wider beams and a sigle coilover with a good set of radius arms. we're trying to keep things simple and cheap as possible. don't need anything ridiculously wide and trick, just something that works pretty good...so what do you think???suggestions, comments?

Just doing the cut and turn doesnt widen them, if anything the beams will be a tiny bit narrower. The beams that your talking about are widened, as well as cut/turned. and on the site it lists the widening as a $350 option. A little wider beams, a 2.5 coilover, some good heimed radius arms and some airbumps would be a killer setup and wouldnt be all that expensive.

Do you have any idea who to call or where to go for the beams? Thanks

Perry McNeil does a lot of work with 4x4 Explorers and Rangers. Haven't ever really looked at the work up close, but my friend has coilovers on his 4x4 ranger, that was done by Perry, and he seems to like it. There is a link for his shop on this site. Good luck!

I'd be first in line!

That is my friend John Bakers Explorer. It is really nice. He cut the frame at the fire wall and then went nuts with tube! Trophy Explorer! The rear should be interesting with his canti lever system. It will be fun watching Jason and John blasting through the desert.

I thought that picture looked familiar. John does some REALLY clean work and that is his own personal toy after selling his 7s truck. I've seen the front end swing and it is getting 26" of travel - if you wanted to see it yourself I'm sure you could just roll down to Johns shop in Costa Mesa and check it out.

That Exploder looks good. Whats the clearance between the spindle and tire? looks like the rim should have more offset.
