Optima SCORE Desert Series
LOS ANGELES--SCORE International announced today a one-year renewal of
the title sponsorship agreement for September’s popular 7th Annual SCORE Las
Vegas Primm 300 desert race, in Primm, Nev., 35 miles south of Las Vegas at
the Nevada/California border. The co-sponsorship renewal for this special
event comes from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, Las Vegas
Events and Primm Valley Resorts.
On Sept. 13-14, nearly 150 vehicles, from as many as 12 States and
Mexico, competing in 16 classes for cars and trucks, are expected to take the
green flag as America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series makes its final visit
of the season to the Las Vegas area for round 5 of the six-race 2002 Optima
SCORE Desert Series.
“This event has proven to be extremely worthwhile for everyone
concerned--a great race for SCORE racers, a very positive economic impact for
Primm Valley Resorts as well as providing significant media exposure for
Southern Nevada,” said Sal Fish, SCORE President and CEO. “Las Vegas Events
has taken the lead this year in regards to our special events agreements for
the SCORE races in Laughlin and Primm. We appreciate LVE’s pro-active
approach to who we are and what we are doing as well as the increased
involvement from Primm Valley Resorts. It all adds up to an even better event
this September.”
The SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will also be the final event of the new
SCORE Triple Crown of Southern Nevada. The season-opening SCORE Laughlin
Desert Challenge, Jan. 20-21, started the SCORE Triple Crown and the
inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250, July 10-14, will be the middle
event. The three races which include added contingency bonuses for racers who
win their respective classes in all of the SCORE races in Southern Nevada.
“SCORE has provided our entire resort area in Primm with tremendous
non-gaming as well as gaming economic impact and media exposure for six
years, easily making it the number 1 special event we are involved with on a
continuing basis,” said Tracy Bailey, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing
for Primm Valley Resorts. “Our relationship with Sal Fish, SCORE and the
SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 is one we’re more than happy to continue.”
On Saturday, Sept. 14, vehicles will leave the start/finish line area,
located in the special events compound on the grounds of Buffalo Bill’s
resort in Primm, one every 30-seconds in the elapsed-time race. Nine of the
classes in
the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 will be required to cover four laps of the
69.8-mile race course (279.2 miles)
while the seven slowest classes will be required to cover three laps for a
total distance of 209.40 miles. All classes will have an 11-hour time limit
to become official finishers in the elapsed-time race.
“This will be our second event having direct involvement with SCORE and
we have every reason to believe it will run as smoothly and provide as
significant overall positive results as January’s SCORE Laughlin Desert
Challenge did,” said Pat Christenson, President of Las Vegas Events. “We are
building a very solid relationship with SCORE International. Sal Fish and his
staff have a good understanding of our expectations and what the LVE board of
directors requires from special events we sponsor.”
Racing on their home desert, Southern Nevada racers are always strong
contenders in this race. Las Vegas’ Troy Herbst is the defending overall and
unlimited Class 1 champion of the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300. Herbst
is also the five-time defending SCORE Class 1 season point champ in his
Terrible Herbst Motorsports Ford-powered
Smithbuilt open-wheel desert race car. Nearly 20 entries from Southern Nevada
are expected in the starting grid.
Among the top challengers for the overall title that Herbst will have to
contend with will be his older brothers, Ed and Tim Herbst.
Tim and Ed Herbst, who won the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300 in the featured
SCORE Trophy-Truck division in their 750-horsepower Ford F-150 in 1998, are
very familiar with the desert terrain where they honed their gifted racing
skills. The older Herbst brothers won the SCORE Trophy-Truck season titles in
both 1999 and 2000.
Pre-race festivities will be behind Buffalo Bill’s Resort include the
colorful manufacturer’s midway and technical inspection, from Noon to 7 p.m.
on Friday (Sept. 13), of all the race vehicles.
Post-race festivities will start with a SCORE bar-b-que in the Star of
the Desert Arena in Primm at 7 p.m. followed by the awards celebration at 9
p.m.
Admission is free for spectators to grandstands at the start/finish line
area in the special events compound at Buffalo Bill’s resort. This area is
mandated as the only designated spectator area by the Bureau of Land
Management which issues the permit for the race.
The computerized drawing for official starting positions, by class, will
be held Friday, Aug. 16, at the SCORE International headquarters in Los
Angeles.
After the SCORE Las Vegas Primm 300, the final remaining race on this
year’s six-race Optima SCORE Desert Series schedule is the 35th Annual Tecate
SCORE Baja 1000, Nov. 20-23, which will start in Ensenada, on the Pacific
Ocean side of the Baja California in Mexico and finish in La Paz, on the Sea
of Cortez side of the peninsula.
