To quickly become the richest desert race in the United States

Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles & ATVs all part of 2nd Event of 2002 SCORE Triple
Crown of So. Nevada

LOS ANGELES--Starting with a $10,000 bonus to the first overall finisher
among the car and truck classes and added bonuses for all classes, July’s
Inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 desert race will quickly become the
nation’s richest desert race. According to SCORE officials, over $30,000 in
added purse, a 50 percent payback of entry fees and significant contingency
posting, the final cash and contingency prizes will pass the $500,000 mark
for the new race, to be held July 10-14 in Southern Nevada.
SCORE International, the Los Angeles-based desert racing sanctioning
body, is producing the newest SCORE race, Round 4 of the six-race 2002 Optima
SCORE Desert Series, America’s Foremost Desert Racing Series. The
motorsports extravaganza will be held on the outskirts of Henderson, Nev.,
the growing city on the southeast side of Las Vegas.
“With the help of our sponsors, contingency donors and the high number
of racers we are expecting, the inaugural SCORE Henderson’s Terrible 250 will
exceed all expectations, especially for a first-time event,” said Sal Fish,
SCORE President and CEO. “With all the extras being added to this race,
Southern Nevada is on the verge of experiencing a truly great family-style
special event, and a SCORE desert race will just be icing on the cake.”
With a unique co-sponsorship from the Henderson (Nevada) Convention and
Visitors Bureau along with Southern Nevada-based Herbst Gaming, the SCORE
Henderson’s Terrible 250 will be a 4-lap open desert race run over a
challenging course of 56 miles on Saturday, July 13, between Nevada State
Highway 93 and the McCullough Mountains. The start/finish line spectator area
will be located behind Black Mountain at the end of Horizon Ridge Road. The
nearly 190 expected entries will compete in one of 23 Pro classes and 5
Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs.
The busy race-week schedule includes a major charity event, an off-road
trade show, three concerts, a Fireworks show, a pit crew challenge, and a
parade of entries.
Part of the added bonus purse, the first overall motorcycle finisher will
receive an added $3,000 and the first overall ATV finishers will receive an
added $2,000. For all Pro classes with a minimum ‘Lucky Seven’ starters, the
winner will receive an added $1,000 and the runner-up will receive an added
$500 from the bonus purse.
Instead of the normal computerized drawing for starting positions in
each class being held several weeks prior to the race, a live drawing will be
held Thursday of race week (July 11) at Terrible’s Hotel/Casino. Entries will
receive their vehicle numbers in the order received and all entries received
by SCORE by June 21 will be included in the live drawing. Late entries will
receive the next available vehicle number and start position.
The schedule for the elapsed-time race (July 13) will have the
motorcycles and ATVs leave the start line
beginning at 6 a.m. and the cars and trucks hitting the desert starting at 3
p.m. in the afternoon. With vehicles starting one every 20 seconds, all
vehicles will have 8 hours to complete the 224-mile race.
The fastest vehicles in each part of the race will be expected to
complete the race in approximately four hours. Nearly 40 entries from the
Southern Nevada area are expected to be a part of the first major desert race
held this close to metropolitan Las Vegas in over a decade.
Race week ancillary events will start with the SCORE Charity Showdown on
Wednesday, July 10 and finish on Saturday, July 13 with the SCORE Checkered
Flag Fiesta.
The July 13 SCORE Checkered Flag Fiesta will be held from 8 p.m. to 2
a.m. at the Fiesta-Henderson Hotel/Casino. Featuring the music of the popular
Henderson-based The Press band, race highlight videos will be also be shown.
Admission of $5 per person in advance, and $10 at the door includes one
beverage.
Friday’s busy schedule (July 12) will center on and around Water Street
in downtown Henderson. During the day, the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway,
safety inspection of all race vehicles and the Water Street Off-Road Expo
will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The IGT Pit Crew Challenge (5:30
p.m.-6:30 p.m.), with separate competition for car, truck, motorcycle and ATV
teams, will precede the free SCORE Henderson Terrible’s 250 Tommy Rocker
Concert. The concert, to be held at Henderson’s Police Park, will start at
7:30 p.m.
The SCORE Parade of Entries will be held at noon on Saturday (July 13),
with all car and truck entries slowing moving from downtown Henderson
approximately five miles to the main pits.
The official SCORE Race Shuttle service will continuously move
spectators to and from the Fiesta-Henderson and the start/finish line area
during race day, Saturday, July 13. With only limited parking in the main
spectator area at the start/finish line, the $5 SCORE Shuttle Service pass
provides unlimited roundtrip service to the area located approximately three
miles from the Fiesta, which has ample parking.
The 2002 Optima SCORE Desert Series started with the most unique and the
shortest race and will finish with the oldest and most well known desert
race. After kicking off the season with the SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge
in Laughlin, 90 miles south of Las Vegas, it will conclude in November with
the always-memorable 35th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, starting in Ensenada
and running the length of the rugged Baja California peninsula to La Paz,
Mexico. Three of the events, all mid-to-long-distance endurance desert races,
are once again in Mexico, peninsula along with the three multi-lap races in
Southern Nevada.
Round 2 and 3 are both held in Mexico. The 16th Tecate SCORE San Felipe
250 was held March 1-3,
and is being followed by the 34th SCORE Tecate Baja 500, May 31-June 2.
Rounds 4 and 5 will both be held in Southern Nevada. After the new SCORE
Henderson’s Terrible 250 (July 10-14) race in Henderson, Nev., the 7th SCORE
Las Vegas Primm 300 will be held Sept. 13-14 in Primm, Nev., 35 miles south
of Las Vegas.
The three Southern Nevada races are part of the new SCORE Triple Crown
of Southern Nevada, a bonus prize pool and contingency program for the racers.
Besides over 200 SCORE personnel, also assisting with staff for the
event will be the Henderson Rotary Club, who will handle the food and
beverage concessions, along with representatives from D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education), who will coordinate the start/finish line spectator
parking area.
SCORE, the Henderson CVB and Herbst Gaming, are also receiving
assistance for this event from the Bureau of Land Management, Clark County
Air Quality Control, City of Boulder City, Boulder City Parks and Recreation,
and the City of Henderson.
