2007 Dakar Rally The Dakar Rally in numbers


Wolfsburg (27 December 2006). The Dakar Rally is an event of superlatives: In Lisbon on 6 January 525 teams start the 7,915 kilometre marathon trek to Dakar situated on the Atlantic coast of Africa. An intricate puzzle of spare parts, diesel, ‘quick’ soups, t-shirts, tents and much more.

5 Volkswagen Race Touareg compete in the "Dakar" 2007: The factory teams of Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/RSA), Carlos Sainz/Michel Périn (E/F), Ari Vatanen/Fabrizia Pons (FIN/I), Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (RSA/D) and Carlos Sousa/Andreas Schulz (P/D) in customer team "Lagos Team”

6 countries are crossed by the Rally Armada on the journey from Lisbon to Dakar: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Mauretania, Mali and the Senegal

12 marquees are erected each evening by Volkswagen as working areas for engineers, doctors, co-drivers, physiotherapists, navigation team and as mobile workshop for the Race Touareg

12 appearances for Ari Vatanen in the "Dakar”, the 2007 event is his thirteenth competitive showing. He is the most successful driver in the car classification with 4 wins

15 stages are to be driven from 6 till 21 January

16 days are needed by the participants of this famous desert marathon to race from Lisbon to Dakar

16 kilometres are all that separate the competitors from start to the finish of the final "Dakar” stage along the picturesque Lac Rose. It is, as a result, the shortest

21 of the 53 African states have already been crossed in the 28 editions of the Dakar Rally held to date

23 overall victories in cross country rallying are credited to Michel Périn’s account. The Frenchman is the most successful co-driver in this discipline

25 tonnes of spare parts and equipment are transported in the Volkswagen team’s trucks, including 400 BFGoodrich tyres fitted to BBS rims

30 vehicles form the Volkswagen fleet: 4 Race Touareg 2, 3 Race-Trucks, 7 Service-Trucks, 1 TV-Truck, 3 Volkswagen Transporter T5, 9 Service-Touareg and 3 Press-Touareg. On top of this come one Race Touareg 2 and 3 support vehicles from the Lagos Team

50 m² dressing and bandages, 1,000 Malaria tablets, 1,000 pain killers and 150 bottles of eye-drops can be found in the team doctors’ medical kit

78 Volkswagen team members and nine from Team Lagos travel in the accompanying armada. Just as many one-man tents, insulation mats and sleeping bags are shipped for the bivouacs

120 km/h is the maximum speed for the support vehicles. In towns and villages the speed is 30 and/or 50 for all competitors

240 vehicles form the service team armada at the "Dakar”

525 participants take the start in Lisbon as competitors: 250 motorbikes, 187 cars and 88 Race-Trucks

580 hours of TV coverage about the 2006 "Dakar” were broadcast in 178 countries

690 journalists were accredited in 2006

775 kilometres is the length of the longest stage from Ouarzazate to Tan Tan in Morocco. 325 of these are against the clock, 450 are liaison stage kilometres

1,560 t-shirts will be required by the team during the rally

1,787.5 kilograms is the minimum weight of the Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 stipulated by the regulations

2,000 ‘Quick’ soups are available for hungry team members. Breakfast and dinner are served at the bivouac by the organiser

3,300 parts are assembled to make a Volkswagen Race Touareg 2 (excluding engine and gearbox), 1,200 components are contained in the space-frame alone

4,200 square metres are covered by the Volkswagen bivouac that is built up every evening

4,309 kilometres will be run against the clock in the 15 official stages during the 2007 "Dakar”

7,915 kilometres is the length covered by the 2007 Dakar Rally route

13,000 drivers and co-drivers have participated in the Dakar Rally since 1979

44,000 litres of diesel are supplied by BP/Aral for the Volkswagen team’s Race Touaregs and Race-Trucks

That is a lot of numbers. The Dakar race is definatley impressive.
