OK - that's gotta be the coolest thing I have ever seen!!! LOL!!! I watched parts of the Dakar a few years ago on TV, and those trucks were my favorite ones to watch - they showed them in dunes like the big dunes at glamis.......seems like there is nothing those big trucks can't do!!! Why doesn't SCORE have a class for them?? LOL!!! And that driver is nuts for flying through the woods in that thing!!! HAHAHA!

I love the part where it flashes to the mass start of the bikes. I laughed and thought "this must be all of the guys on bikes running for their lives!" I could not fathom being on a bike or quad and having one of these bears on your six! Great vid complete with Euro tech rave music!

this was discussed in another thread in the rally section and here's some cool news... ---

Turbo Tom Geviss is racing the brand new Robby Gordon MAN Chase Truck at Dakar. He was announced as the driver of record in the #556 with Will Higman & Paul Mischel. Driving the other Robby Gordon 6x6 truck is Roger Willis in a support role.

Turbo was getting it big in the testing sessions at Parker and Glamis...he has commented that it gonna be fast and furious...

Darren Skilton is driving the #572 Mercedes Chase Truck-also a full size "trash truck" and you can be sure they will be rocking and rolling representing the US.

Welcome to our world on this side of the pond!

I had one of the beasts start in front of me in Morocco last march and thought I was going to have to eat thrown rocks until I could get around it. HAH! He started 30 secs ahead of me and once he went around the first bend, I never saw him again until the end of the day. They rock! 1200+ hp. They run in Class 4 Trucks (over 7.5 tonnes). Pickups, like ProTrucks and TT's are considered "cars" over here.

I have some Dutch friends who keep threatening to bring their Kamaz over for the Baja 1000 and spank the trophy trucks. In the Dakar, Trucks start last and have the top speeds limited because when something goes wrong with 10+ tonnes moving like a tornado in a trailer park, things go very, very badly very quick. By the way, you can't nerf over here, considered "bad form" and you'd get black flagged. How we get around the problem is by using a gps based transmitter that starts blinking and screaming when another unit is closing up on you. Basically, it tells you to get your butt over to the side. This technology has saved the lives of countless bikers from bieng run over by cars and the big trucks.

Cheers!

THe HEMTT A3's haul *** for a truck of its size. They are called Dragon Wagons in the military. I am not sure since Iraq, but prior, when they were having war games in Yuma and 29 palms, you could see them caravaning either on the 8 or 10 freeway's. I had the chance to see one work out by slab city (near Brawley) off road and that thing had to be doing 50 mph hauling 10000 gallons of JP-7 jet fuel on an old, very rutted dirt road. It was amazing to see.

Does anyone remember in 1999 when Rod Hall arranged with Casey Folks to bring a few of his Russian friends over with their Kamaz, as I recall, to demo it in the BITD Vegas to Reno race? Parts of the course in the mountains were littered with tree branches after and they said "No good! Too much trees!" I picture parts of Baja like the pine forest and some narrow trail sections about the same. Sounds really cool but probably wouldn't work. Opinions?

"Tough enough for Dakar, tough enough for my concrete company or airport"
Exactly!!! It is all about marketing and publicizing brand recognition. Oshkosh and Catepillar for that matter is big on pushing USA built and supporting the American way and our troops. Oshkosh, Catepillar and Hummer are all known for building some of the toughest vehicles on the planet. From a marketing standpoint, it would be a match made in heaven I would think. Once upon a time, H1's were only sold to the military. Until they found out there was an actual market for their vehicles. This would be a coop for Oshkosh as far as marketing to the European masses. If they felt there was a market to sell to, like any good business, they would capitalize on it . As far as only selling to the military, Aircraft companies sell to the public all of the time. Bell Textron still sells its 212 to private buyers all over the world, it is a HH1N Fat Attack minus armor and weaponry. I think that they would consider it. Business is business, only time will tell. The question is would RG consider using their equipment. THose vehicles have PTO's which drive the wheels on the trailer as well. That is alot more money to ship those things over to Europe. It would be quite an expensive endeavor. But using those would definetely catch my attention and draw me in.

Considering RG's support trucks are a "full cost" expense, any support from CAT or Oshkosh would be of value.

FlyHiFlyLo
January 21st, 2007, 13:59
If RG was to get 6 trucks and 3 months Oshkosh engineering support (roughly 2000 man hours) provided to him, plus cash and tweaked engines from CAT this would greatly enhance RG's support crew. Remember, RG had no on course "race support" for his "race support". This could have been a serious issue.

That is a very good point. I know it is a pipe dream as of now, but man would it be cool to see 3 or 4 of those H3's racing against the production teams, with two beasts on course for each one. Man, if anyone has proven to the Big 3 that they are capable of owning/ managing a competetive team in Dakar, it is Robby Gordon.

Yes, but even Robby would be hard pressed to find another American that could drive one of those Hummers that fast for 17 days and 6000 miles and finish in the top ten or even bring it home in one peice.

I think a couple of wheel men from SCORE could handle the job. Believe it or not, besides for Robby, there are a few more world class talents that reside right here in the US. People who can get in and compete in just about anything with wheels. Big names that could along with Robby bring the media with them, I am not saying that they would not need to practice a bit before a race of this magnitude, but there are some people who can just drive, no matter what you put them in. The queston is, would they want to do Dakar. They are the one's who needs to be sold. The drivers with bling so to speak. Seems to me that Robby is amazed with the kind of attention this race gets outside the US, sell that to the big named drivers. Sell the adventure of Dakar. Sell going to Africa and seeing it like very few ever get to, sell racing on a beach with hundreds of thousands cheering you on. Like I said, It is a pipe dream, I know that. But man would it be cool to have 4 H3's built by RGM competing for the title with Volkswagon and Mitsubishi.

Since this is my dream, I would also like to see Robby Gordon Motorsports become the next Penske Racing. With 2 or 3 competetive Nascar teams, a couple of Busch teams, a pair of IRL Teams, an ALMS team, with a trophy truck, a pro 2 truck and the Dakar team. I would be tempted to give up my 6 digits to sweep floors for a program like that. Man I am pathetic....I need to get a life...... somebody wake my *** up.....:D

Robby is well understanding in ten years where he needs to be business wise. He knows being an owner is an option. He also knows what his unfinished business is, Indy 500, Daytona 500 and now Dakar. Sweeping floors would be a good place to be a Fly on the wall.
