Well a few months ago were hoping to race the car@ Primm but reality is we wont make that one but maybe something shortly after. The car should be done enough to show it @ Primm.. Maybe even test a bit.

See ya @ The Midnight for sure! I am blind @ night but oh well,

JESSE_at_TLT.. I really like the cage as well.. looks better in real life for sure. cant wait to start the body here in a week or so.

Yes Jesse we have designed the car with the plan to produce them .. We did a ton of CAD work so the repeatability is quick and accurate each time. Just need to finish this one up and go testing and see.

For those that would like to follow this build I will update the galleries each week with new progress pictures.. gonna be a busy month for sure so stay tuned.

We finally put the car on the scales with everything we could possibly think of air tanks..
2 37" spares both batteries air jack lights etc.. and we were 3840 with a 60% 40% front/rear weigh ratio.. with fuel that should add some more front and be very close to 55/45.

Hi, Chuck. The wiring job that guy did for you is good work. May I ask who did the job ? I'm a tech myself. That technique looks very much like aircraft standards. The push/pull breakers you have are definately aero and not auto industry.

I'm curiuos, why would you go with a push/pull breaker instead of the much cheaper version of a push to reset style? Do you need to be able to pull breakers for safety issues duing a pit ?

BTW, your team is out of AZ correct?

Hey Johnny

Yes we are in AZ

Our wiring is done by Gerald from Finish line in Phx.
The push pull is by preference as well as it allows us to kill a breaker when we want (like kill a fan or shut something down if we want for whatever reason without having to wire in another switch to do the same job.

Dunebuggy.com
November 10th, 2006, 10:11
We designed a cradle for them for extreme abuse so they should do ok..

We have run these lights pretty hard for a few years now on 20 or so cars and they actually hold up pretty well under some pretty harsh conditions.. they are HID and put out a ton of light too.

The body will be available in glass or aluminum also with or without the lights for those that choose not to run them.

Back to the light question.

Here is the "unfinished" light assembly I was talking about.. it allows quick easy removal of the headlights if needed and also offers good support as well as a perfect light alignment every time.

The finished product will be very nice once we finish it.. anno it and put in all the nice aircraft rivots and such.

We start the next car in a few weeks and will know more then what impact 8 months of cad work shaves off the labor costs and actual build time.

Thanks

There is 8 months of CAD work and over 1,000 individual cad files for this car primarily using solid works.. . we did do lots of simulations but no actual structural crash analysis.

The link below has some of the cad files posted to give an idea as well as other images.

Dunebuggy.com

60rear 40 Front was the first pass.. I am thinking 55 45 for the final The next time we weigh will be much more accurate as far as bias goes.. but very close on the total dry weight.

I will post as soon as we can put the scales under it.

The best part was the test session with the guys over @ King..man they really woke that car up and made it work well! Hats off to those guys for taking the time to meet with us.

4725 pounds......dang that sux. the chassis is 1.75" right? were you guys originally planning on racing SCORE with this car or just playing around?

C'mon there Matt.. you should know the weight rules to get tagged. remember there is 87 gallons of fuel in there..

Drop 1/2 the fuel and a spare .. maybe one of the spare batteries jacks etc.. and you are well under score requirements.

none of the big cars are under 4k @ the line full of fuel "race ready"

matt_helton
June 27th, 2007, 10:16
the SCORE rule book says "vehicle weight is AS RACED, but without driver."

so the car was built for 2 spare tires but you'll only run one?....and the car was built for 2 batteries but you'll only run one?....and the car was built for a jack but you'll throw that out too?...and the car can hold 87 gallons but you'll only race with 43.5 gallons?......and "etc"...what, like tool bags, impact gun, water, mre's, first aid kit, spare parts.....is that the other stuff you might not run either?

and im doin some rough math here...

half the fuel.......280 lbs
tire....130lbs
battery...40lbs
jack....40lbs
"etc"....50lbs

=540lbs which equals 185lbs still over weight.

im not trying to bust your balls here just trying to understand the process here. perhaps im totally wrong here in my interpretation. if so please correct me.

As far as your request to be corrected here is how the weight rules read.

Rule CR41

Weight shall be considered "wet weight" for closed course and "dry weight" for long course. (Dry weight is with ALL fuel tanks drained) Tools, spares and parts MUST BE REMOVED but otherwise the vehicle must be race ready. Official weight will be considered weight shown on official scales.

Hope this helps you there Matt.

So what I get out of this is that the SCORE rule book says 2 different things. I wonder if this is so they can enforce the rules 2 different ways?

Not to add fuel to this but....
Dont use words like NONE. I can name several cars that were "engineered" to be light. People get carried away when building cars, especially without experience. Parts are parts..its how you hang those parts that make a difference. Our class 1 car is 3880lbs completely wet and 100% ready to race (55 gallons of gas, tools, spares, impact guns, front lights, everything). And I will put the pinkslip to the car on the line for that one. I personally laugh when people post the weights of there cars. My car is 1800lbs.....no fuel, no spare, no seats, no engine, 1 shock....Weigh it like you are going to race it...That is the only number that counts! Everyone agreed to these new chassis rules from score so I hope and pray that Savage sticks to them. I personally dont like them but as a fab shop that sells cars I have to build to the rules. A customer would be extremely upset if there new car was illegal to race. And rightfully so!!!

Dunebuggy.com
June 27th, 2007, 19:56
I think the words were "None of the big cars".. rps.. porter..jimco all weigh in in the range especially with the big parts.. series 30 etc.....

I am sure your car is great and light as most of your stuff is, but If we wanted a lighter car we would have created one..(that would be more like the upcoming Competition Series Sidewinder ) It will allow us to offer 2 entirely different levels of car. and believe me they are 2 different cars when you consider weight as a primary factor and not the limitation of weight allowed.

Sparky..Its not a hush hush project.. our shop doors are always open or the shop cams are on 24 hours a day. feel free to peak in whenever ;)

Matt, had a scare sometime last year when the tubing/weight issue was comming into effect. There where 3 builders whose cars are over weight with fuel, under when dry. Savage clarified that the inspection is for dry vehicles.
Chuck, what is the distribution on the car whe you start stacking the 2 130 lb spares and 560 lbs of fuel in the chassis. I applaude the distribution on the dry weight, nice to see people making an effort to move some sprung weight to the front of a vehicle.
Just hope it didn't get nixed by the dual llantas in the rear and the fuel in the tank.
When you gonna bring it out to a "big boys race" and see how she goes versus your competition . . .

We new about all the new requirements from the get go.. as you build you do wonder about weight and this and that but the end result was very good and even better than expected.

When we put all the fuel and the other spare on it actually improved the weight bias to nearly 55/45.. the cool thing was that when you drain all the fuel in this car the bias only changes 2%

Big races soon I hope.. I have to cherry pick races based on Time available, Lots of customers to build cars for.

Looking forward to playing this weekend.

so in CR33 of the score rule book where it says "for the purposes of determining roll bar tubing sizes, vehicle weight is as raced, but without driver" and vehicles over 4000lbs will be 2.000" x.120".........so this is just a type-o or something? why would they have this in print if the real rule is a DRY CAR with NO SPARES, PARTS, JACKS, TOOLS, BATTERIES, or SUPPLIES?

i just race mdr in a mild steel pos so all this weighing and tubing size stuff is pretty foreign to me. i just really want to know what the rule IS and eliminate the gray area that i see with the term "as raced"

Lets just say it. this car should be 2" tubing plain and simple. Some how...it will get a SCORE tag. This is what everyone is thinking, just come out and say it!!!

No offense Duneebuggy, but that is what everyone is thinking but no one has the balls to say it. Good luck w/ your new car!

--------

Rule CR41

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weight shall be considered "wet weight" for closed course and "dry weight" for long course. (Dry weight is with ALL fuel tanks drained) Tools, spares and parts MUST BE REMOVED but otherwise the vehicle must be race ready. Official weight will be considered weight shown on official scales.
--------------------------------------------------------
Matt...
One rule establishes tube size requirement based on the weight of a race car and one determines and defines the rules in which weight is considered and determined and any requirements. (wet, dry etc.. along with two different types of racing.

If you are still unclear maybe a call to Score or Savage may be in order.

A long time ago in a galaxy far far away, there were scientific methods before CAD, to see just how things were going to turn out. A diabolical instrument called a crane scale could do many things that would be difficult with a computer. Measure anything, anytime, at any stage. Use your imagination. :) (White arrow above shop kitty points to scale hanging from portable frame)

Are you suggesting that somehow... someway you would be able to estimate, plan and have an idea of what any particular project could possibly weigh "BEFORE" you actually built it! I call BS! NOT possible!! not to mention everyone knows that big heavy cars will always dominate so there is no point in your crazy futureistic alien like technology my friend.

What did Hardesty get in class one this 500? I forgot already....4th..5th..hmmmm
I wish people would build their cars lighter the front bumpers of our cars are getting thrashed trying to push them beasts out O the way!:D
