Just back from Rally school. Met up with BIll Barfoot, the promoter for Arizona for rally events. He told me he just inked a deal with Canyon Offroad Park to host a rallycross once a month. This starts next Saturday (3/2/02). You can drive your street car. No cage, seats, fuel cell, or anything like that is required. Just a basic street car. He was also VERY interested in having off-road trucks show up. He said that if 3 of the same "type" of vehicle show up, they can have their own class. Fee's (cheap) and other specifics are available at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.rallycrossusa.com/>http://www.rallycrossusa.com/</A>
This is a great oppertunity to see your driving skills develop. They will have timing gear, etc as well as people organizing the whole thing. Tech inspection (does it have seat belts?) begins at 9am +/-. You don't even need a helmet, since there will be some there for you to use.
FWIW, I would be happy to share all the things I learned this weekend at school with anyone that wanted to learn about Left Foot Breaking, Hand Brake turns, etc.
This is also a great way to see other fully prepared rally cars and meet some of the drivers. Hanging out over the weekend with them was just like hanging out with off-roaders. They're just like us.
See you there,
Happy motoring, Tim

Tim,
Do they do rally cross in California? If so what is the link to their web site.
Thank you,

Jerry,
They sure do. There was one today in Ridgecrest. There is also a series at the Toomstone Paintball park in Crona. I dont have any web adress's maybe Tim does. Hey Tim I just got back myself from the school. Pretty cool, we ( my wife and I) learned a bunch about all the tech stuff ( route books, time cards , etc). The driving part seamed to be more geared toward people who had never got there car loose. There was just too many cars and too little time to really get much instruction. All in all had a great time. If all goes well we plan on running the Rim. Marshall

Jerry, I haven't seen the 2002 RallySprint Schedule yet but, I know there will be an event April 6 at:
Tombstone Paintball Park, Corona, Ca
The contact is Scott Bottomley ralmeister@aol.com. Drop him an email, and he can fill you in on the details.
WARNING! There may be a difference between a RallySprint and a RallyCross! The Tombstone stuff is listed as a RallySprint, which may require a rally prepared car. This is unlike a RallyCross, in which you can use a basic street car (even a rental! I've done that twice now!).
For more info, just go to the <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.californiarallyseries.com/>CRS webpage</A>. If you don't find exactly what you are looking for, just send an email to anyone listed. They are all very interested in helping. They're great people and want to see the sport grow.
Happy motoring, Tim

Hmmmm, Pat I may take my truck out there and test it out as well. I am not familiar with rally stuff (sorry) how are the tracks, Im guessing pretty flat if you can use a stock car. Is it mainly turns and stuff? Sorry for my ignorance I "usually" stick to bikes and trucks but I'm interested in all off road activities.
Later
You may beat me in the flats, but watch out in the whoops! ! !

I plan on being there. Just putting the last touches on the "rally toy". It will be (if ready) a good place to figure the little $h!# box out.

E-mailed for info and:
Pat,
I'm glad to answer any questions you've got, our upcoming event on April 6th is being held in Corona, Ca. Our remaining events will be later this year in October and November at Jean Dry Lake, Jean, NV.
Now about April 6th which is a RallySprint and is held on a closed course with cars going one at a time, but first does your truck have a cage in it? A five point harness? and do you have a sa approved 95 or better helmet?
In order to compete you'll need your truck to have those things for the RallySprint. For the Rally-X being held later in the year, all you would need is a snell 90 or better helmet and seat beats just like any passenger car. That's all and $20 bucks. That easy!
I hope I answered your questions Please let me know if you have any more.
Scott Bottomley.
So it looks like it will be later in the year since I am cageless at the present time.

I'm with you guys. The rally-x stuff is cool. Pretty much just like autocross but on dirt. As far as I know the only difference between rally sprint and rally cross is how hard it is on the vehicle (course length, jumps and so on). I could be wrong, but they sound very much the same other wise. Also, as far as I know, what they consider a cage is a basic Auto Power (very cost efficient) bolt in type, not a full on “off road racing”, weld in cage like we are all used too.

Previously it was spoken: wow! maybe he'd rent the car haha.
Today I rented a car from Avis and won my class! (My rally car is not ready yet.) RallyCross is a Kick! It's a great way to develop your driving skills and meet some cool people. Entry fee was $25. The promoter was asking where my off-road friends were. (Probably San Felipe!). Anyway, get out there!

Yeah, it was a lot of fun. There were 20-30 cars. Pretty good considering there was hardly any advertising. It's pretty cool to just show up in whatever ya got and "race". Some of the Subaru's were amazingly fast. I don't think they were too worried when I pulled up in the rental Sunbird.
Andrew Browns STi Outback (275+ hp, 6 sp sequential gearbox) had the fastest lap time of the day. Blistering. He owns AVSport. (AVSport built the Subaru that won the Ramada Express Rally in Dec.

SUNBIRD?! whoa...that's so rad! what's a good rental car? anything that's RWD?
also, if anyone wants to help...i think i might build out a datsun 510 to rip around in, sounds like fun!! (thank God for ecology) there's one sittin in the yard that i think could still run

Actually, my preference so far is the Cavalier. The Sunbird wouldn't Left Foot Brake AT ALL. Choices are pretty limited. But all you need it a FRONT wheel drive 4 cyl car with a hand brake. Works for me. My AWD car will probably hit the street tonight. Now things start getting dangerous!

Ya know, it really doesn't cost that much to participate. Get a bone stock street car, get a cage in it, go to a rally! That's what the Production class is all about. At the ClubRally level, there are no vehicle age limits. The cage in my car wasn't that expensive. The one in George Scott's car is beautiful, I don't know how much that cost. You don't need one that fancy.
Anyway, I'm gonna try to have my car fully legal by the April 6 RallySprint in Corona. Anyone reading this is welcome to hang out!

John, the RallySprint does not typically use co-drivers or notes.
Also, the RallySprint will require a fully legal Rally car. This is different than a RallyCross which is what I was doing in the rental.
Either way...BE THERE! I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun.

You can at a RallyCross. A RallySprint requires a full SCCA legal car. It took me a while to figure out the difference.
This is what I was trying to encourage with this thread. Go to a RallyCross with your regular street car, get introduced to rallying, and have a great time! (Bring a helmet if you have one.)

How spectator friendly do you think the April 6 rally will be?
TimHayosh
March 31st, 2002, 09:18
I suspect this RallySprint will be very spectator friendly. The official link is:http://www.shults.com/rallycross (http://californiarallyseries.com/2002events.html>http://californiarallyseries.com/2002events.html</A>
For). It has four dates listed. I would recommend contacting Scott Bottomley at: ralmeister@aol.com or Gabe Pari at gabepari@webuniverse.net for more information.
All these events typically welcome spectators.
