Hey Curtis, Check out this thread in the "Site" section....it may help answer your question.
Reputation Marks explained. (http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15437)

I don't really get it either, but I think that if someone likes what you say they hit the little scale button and say weather they approve or disapprove and then you get a green mark? Or something? And I read that the longer you are a member, the higher the number. I have seen a comment in my user CP from one.

i am also having some trouble understanding. i dont understand how your green dots go up. the explanation klaus posted seems to only explain the "rep power" number. do you get another green dot every time someone "approves" of your post? and i think the most green dots ive seen is 4? haha, good system none the less. i use it

Its just a way of showing users, or maybe non-users, that with people with more green marks or a bigger number that that person knows what they are talking about and people like what that user has to say or comment on a thread.

Speaking of reputation points......why did someone just give me a gray dot for the reputation thread in the Site section??
I tried to be as helpful as possible to Curtis by linking him to a thread about the topic and I get bad feedback?

What does gray mean? I thought red was bad, I've gotten one of those, and I've gotten a few greys when I was helpful, maybe it is something different?

Anytime Curtis. You are very welcome.
In the "Reputation Marks" thread, Klaus said this about the gray marks...
"Users can also collect MINUS points and the green dots turn into grey dots, then red dots."
So, I assume that means that somebody had originally given me positive feedback in that topic. Then somebody else went and gave me negative feedback which turned the green dot to grey. I guess that makes it "neutral"....one good + one bad = neutral rep.
So now if somebody gives me another negative feedback on that topic, it will go to red. Well, at least that's how I see it.
The gray dot really isn't a big deal to me. It's just that I didn't think that I said anything negative or derogatory in that topic....but than again, it is based on people's opinion of what I said.......and i know I'm not known around here for making friends with what I say. :p

Hey SpceSpff the grey and red dots I'm referring to are the ones in each persons "User CP".
If you go into your control panel and look under "Latest Reputation Points Received" it will show you how people have voted when they click on the scale in your post.
An "approve" gives the person a green dot.
A "disapprove" gives the person a red dot but only if they don't have any feedback on that post yet.
Now if somebody goes and chooses "disapprove" on the same post that someone already "approved", it will turn the dot grey and another "disapprove" would turn it red.
Speaking of which, I now have two green dots for this topic....Thanks guys!! Ha ha ha
....and your right Bolt...this whole thing is silly!! :D

VERY IMPORTANT POINT
If you want your rep to go up mention Robby Gordon in a favourable context.
If you want your rep to go down mention Robby Gordon in a Non-favourable context.
REP therefore has nothing to do with what you know or have to say on a subject. :D

Being one who has stirred the pot a bit, let me say that I currently have red, green and grey dots for the same thread. It appears that the particular post the person chooses to vote on has more to do with the color change than the thread it self. I found it interesting that I got a grey vote but no comments good or bad. I was the recipient of several red dots due to people wrongly mistaking anonymous negative voting to be from me due to my disagreeing with them. Although they would not say who they were, the comments made were clear they had been done for reprisal. I actually enjoy a good heated discussion, if it doesn’t regress into a flame war of insults and name calling, I find the votes both good and bad to be interesting. Too bad more people won’t add a comment to go along with the vote or say who they are.

ZTFab
June 27th, 2006, 23:22
Doesn't have anything to do with posting ability.
The higher your number (next to the green dots under your avatar) the more points you can add or subtract from the person you are judging.
I have 2, so if I rate your post, it will either add or subtract 2 points from your current 14.
I have 40 Rep points currently...but a handful are negative from the SCORE tech Inspection thread........I didn't make a lot of friends on that topic.

As previously mentioned, I think that the only problem with the reputation system is the fact that you DON'T HAVE TO post a reason or identity when rating another user.
If somebody disagrees with something that I said, I'd like to know why. Not to start an argument or a PM war but simply to see the opinion that opposes mine. I guess I just want to see some sort of justification for giving negative points.
SpceSpff...glad I could help!!!....and Thanks!!:D
Cracka....that sucks but don't worry, 1 more post and your rep power will increase.
Every 365 days, 500 posts, or 100 reputation points received it goes up.

"Kritter" has 12. Interestingly, his number went from 1 to 11 in one day a while back.
I stiill don't get all of it. Requiring comments or at least multiple choice would be helpful.
I prefer the "Red Flag" method to point out innappropriate posts. You hit the R/F button and state your reasons to the moderators. They either ignore it, or, the post or even the entire thread gets deleted. Anyone can hit the R/F, so in a way, everyone is moderating. It keeps the entire forum very clean and to the point.
FWIW, to the world, I have hit "approve" many times and "disapprove" only twice. (and I'm sure they know who they are);)

I have not recieved any new reputaion marks in the last few weeks(27 in total), but I did just send one to someone as a joke, and got a new message when I sent it, and got the impression that we are now going to be able to see who gives us the marks?
Is this the case, or will it still be a secret?

FYI for those of you that have gotten grey dots. They most likely came from someone that did not have any reputation power yet at the time they gave you the feed back. Therefore, there feedback did not add to or subtract from your Rep. points. I.E. I have a grey dot on one of my posts but the comment was positive. When I figured out who gave me the feedback, I noticed that they were a newer forum member without any reputation power yet. So just because you get a grey dot that doesn't necessarily mean that the feedback is negative, it just means it came from someone with no reputation power. You get red (negative feedback) and green (positive feedback) dots from those who have some reputation power.
So to summarize:
Your reputation power is basically a sign of your seniority on the board. Your power increases the longer you are a member and also increases as you make more and more posts.
Your Reputation points are basically a "tally" of feedback that has been given on posts you make. This effects the little phrase that pops up when you place your curser over your the Reputation dot that appears next to your Reputation Power in your information box next to your posts. It also effects the color of the dot.

all they really are is to see you casn get the biggest head around here. just b/c your not Andy M., Robby G., Larry R., or Mario A., doesnt mean you dont know what your talking about. kinda funny how it all works out, goes to show you who is an alright guy, and who isnt. what the best, is when one person says something that is right, know one see's he's post for some reason, IDK. then 3 post later the same thing is posted by another user, he gets replies like he know what he is talking about, but it was already posted by another user. all im saying is the reputation marks are kinds stupid if you aks me ya know. umm, lets see who can get more green dot and add to our reputaion! bull****, thats stupid. most people know what there talking about just as well as the "other" posters on this board ya know. we all **** the same, so get off your high horses and listen more often, instead of just beeing a post whore. just my $0.02. lets see if i get a red dot, lol.

Yes I am sure. Who did your grey dots come from, do you know? It looks as though the sender shows up now so you should be able to look and see and determine if they would have had any rep power at the time they gave you the dot. Also, what comments were given, positive negative? When you click the reputation icon you can only approve or dissapprove, there is no middle ground there. So, if you have any rep power your dot that you give someone will either be red or green, I see no way to intentionally give someone a grey dot. You get grey dots from those who don't have any actual rep power yet because they cannot add to or subtract from your points talley so the dot shows grey instead of red or green. That's the way it is in my CP.
