View Full Version : RG backup for Dakar

I have been talking to some guys on the dak last year and regardless of the propaganda you guys seem to have been fed the biggest problem RG had was not with the car (specifically) or navigation, or air restriction or any things like that all though im sure they didn’t help. The biggest problem according to the guys that were there was the lack of service.
ALL top running teams run at least 2 identical cars one is the car that they have pegged to win and this will have the best driver and so on. The other one is know as a "water carrier" this is exactly the same car but is heavily laden with spare parts. This car will always run behind the better car and if the front running car has problems this second one has all the spare parts or can tow the first one as this is also allowed.
Then ALL the big teams also enter at least one race truck you know those huge things this truck will have a driver and 2 ace mechanics and be absolutely PACKED with spare parts for the winning car if he needs them from what i gather it will hold everything except the block for the engine. This unit travels slower but can provide valuable assistance or if both cars bust it can tow one or more of them.
Then you have the normal service crew that stay on the road section.
RG should have had ALL OF THE ABOVE AS A MINIMUM. And i hope he has for this year. Also from what I heard there was some *ahem* arguments in the pits and one of the chief pit managers went home with a black eye. LOL. :D
Just my two pennies lol.

I guess if you are a motor bike guy you shouldn't boss around a 4 wheel vet.
LOL Just my two cents.

I also heard that the budget "TO WIN" last year was set at 'unlimited' like nissan the year before!
Will they enter 2 hummers this year?
If not anyone know why?
Also looking forward to seeing these guys this year

As this is the AMAZING pro truck my idol Nasser Al Atiyah drove in the Qatar Baja 2004. Amazing peice of work it flew by me while i was changing one of my flats nearly blew me away.
If you want to see pictures!

I'm guessing if you are a team owner and want to win the Dakar (just like you are telling everyone you will) you should learn how to control your temper. They were too busy telling everyone how fast they were and they started believing their own hype. When the truth started sinking in that the Hummbuggy was a slow pig, they started feeding on each other. Treating your team like dog squeeze is a real quick way to DNF a race like Dakar.
Let’s watch Flash do something really brilliant this year like use a rookie navigator with some new fangled diesel contraption they botch together at the last second. It will be just about as amusing as last year.
There's a whole nickel’s worth.

Your right, I guess the way to win is have no confidence. It seems timid shy pussies always bring home the gold. Just ask Tony Stewart, Dale Earnhardt, AJ Foyt and those types.
RG is going to take what he knows and step it up several notches this next Dakar. I doubt he will have trouble navigating this year either. One question though, why would RG have to get a "Rookie" navigator?
2007 will be a whole different ballgame.
By the way... Who else do you know that is bringing their own team from the US and competing with the big boys in T-2. Perhaps you should try it and see how well you do.
I can't wait till you eat crow.
Here's a buck..... Keep the change.

Smart wins races, not bravado. Being over-confident yields DNFs in the Dakar. Being smart enough to not to have pissy fits with your crew when you are less than half way through the Dakar is also good.
Flash stepping it up a notch is the same game plan he has been using for NASCAR and its starting to sound like a broken record. He has a better chance of winning a NASCAR championship than he does winning the Dakar, he and many of his fanatic followers like you just don't realize that yet. But wait, its NASCAR’s fault he doesn’t win, they are out to get him they call cautions while he’s on pit road just to keep him from winning. I’m sure you fans will have something to say about ASO and tons of excuses soon enough, eh?
Three or four more years and then I could see him winning, but he has a long way to go with building and developing a team for Dakar before that happens. I suppose if he was to drop NASCAR for a while and use all of his resources he could have a chance to win in another couple of years.
He already had one of the best navigators when he rode with Dirk, but he wasn’t willing to listen to him. Dirk could be in the winning car this next Dakar and it sure won’t be a Hummbuggy. Know anyone who is capable of navigating to win the Dakar who will ride with Flash?? Wait, Scott why don’t you navigate for him? You have experience, after all you have a Blog, that has to count for something and you know so much about Dakar, I can tell from your signature.

I don't have the balls to sit in that seat for 6000 miles. Anyways I'm an Engineer and at 300 Lbs I don't see it helping the cause. It translates into 15 less HP.
Anyways... It's time to put your money where your mouth is. 100.00 again? Wait make it $250.00 Right here and now... Same deal as last year?
Side bet.... Fifty bucks says RG and Andy blow Mark and Ryan away in the 500? plus another $50 on the 1000... Malcom Smith?
you have a Blog, that has to count for something.
It does. Just ask RG

:D You two are welcome to meet at my house anytime and settle this. lol!!! I've got two sets of gloves and headgear that you guys can borrow (you need to bring your own mouthpieces:D ). Or we can arrange to air you both on Pay Per View live at the bare nuckle friday night fights in T.J. I'm sure Mr. Jr. Syko can arrange this for a small fee (I'll take 10% as my cut Travis).
We can coincide this Pay Per View event with the debut of the "Fly Canal" PPV, whoever loses the Fly Fight has to pay for the repairs to the Mazda, or buy our newly granted citizen his very own mattress hauling truck so he can start his own business.
Any takers???:D

So I guess this means your hero won't let you help push through contingency eh? I'm not into hero worship like you and I'm not into signatures and collectables, those are for people who set on the side lines and don't participate. I challenge you to STFU, and actually come to a race and be part of it. After doing it for several years you should learn to judge racers by their actions and not by the hype. I’m the one laughing as you are the one who wrote the check for $100.00!!

OK that’s a funny image, but I think it’s a little harsh seeing as you don’t know me. Whatever, just remember you were the one who brought up the “nasty” stuff regarding team conflict in the Dakar.
FYI Jarvis, I have actually been in Mexico on the race course as part of the RG chase team (several times actually), I have also flown air support for RG, flying directly overhead in constant radio communication with the race truck until after they broke in the 01, 1000. He’s never done anything to me and when I stopped helping on his team we parted on good terms. As far as I’m concerned RG is just another racer. His actions leave himself open for comment. Again I have nothing against RG, I think he's a very talented driver. But I am totally against wanna be's who sit on the sideline and talk playground smack. Fly gets annoyed because I call bul$hit on his RG spew.

Its cool, no problem, just wanted to let you know I could see the humor in it and where I was coming from. Fly resorts to personal attacks when he has no defense for his hero. Last year he lost a $100.00 shooting off his mouth and now he wants revenge. Although he gets lots of “insider information” from running Flashes web site, he doesn’t realize he’s just an obsessed starry eyed fan and doesn’t see the whole picture.
BTW, when I accepted his bet last year, I made it with the condition that the winnings went to the orphanage in Valle de Trinidad.

Bingo!! That post was almost as brilliant as the bet you made on Dakar last year. You have just confirmed to RDC that you understand absolutely nothing about off-road racing!! You are a self confirmed couch potato! An arm chair quarterback! You are not even interested in getting involved. You want to just sit in front of the TV and cheer the idol you worship. Any potential credibility you may have had is now totally gone for good.
If you have no interest in participating in off-road racing where you might get dusty or sweaty, why do you come to this site which caters to those who embrace such things? Seems to me that this site is for those of us who relish being hot and sweaty for extended periods of time with little to no sleep, those who are willing to lay in a pool of hot tranny fluid in the sand to get your team back in the race. Many like me, who no longer race as privateers, volunteer to chase for the love of the involvement with a team in the dirt with the sweat, grease sand, and fuel where often just finishing is a huge reward. If you know nothing about what it takes just to be a volunteer, then you know nothing about what it takes to participate as a rider or a driver/co-driver. Those are the ones who know the cost of making a mistake and wasting all that prep time and money. They know what it is like to sleep in the dirt next to their car after making a mistake and breaking their equipment. That Mr. Couch Potato, is only a very small part of the heart of off-road racing, much more of it is totally indescribable and you will never understand any of that from sitting in front of your TV.
You are only interested in hero worship of one particular racer. When someone speaks of your hero in a tone you consider to be blasphemous, you start making personal attacks. You should stick to your myspace and blog, leave the off-road racing to us. You know nothing about off-road racing. You should just go away as you have shown you don’t belong here and you only insult those who do.
I fully expect a retraction of the 2 faced SOB comment, you have no right to call my mother a ***** and I am very insulted.

I'm not your friend and I ain't no bro. If you want to have a Flash Gordon web love fest go make you own site and post little love notes with all the other fans. For some reason you seem to think this is like NASCAR On Line where you post you feelings for your hero and bash the crap out of people who happen to venture in and not share your love. People who actually participate in off-road racing come here and discuss all aspects of off-road racing.
There is a major difference between the love fest sites designed for fans like you and this site in that when guys like Gordon make a bonehead move, it will get commented on by people who actually participate in the sport and see the bonehead move for what it is, a bonehead move. People who actually participate in the sport of off-road racing typically see beyond all the hype you, who are just fans showing support, get all caught up in. I’m not two faced, I just understand racing better than you. You see Mr. Couch Potato, because I embrace and understand the blood, sweat and dirt of off-road racing (that you avoid) I can say that Flash Gordon is a talented driver AND at the same time say that he definitely lacks in many areas, the two things are not mutually exclusive. Unfortunately, your limited “Just a Fan” perspective doesn’t allow this intelligence to occur and causes you to go off in psychotic outbursts of flaming insults. You also fail to see that your interjecting “I love Robby” at every opportunity makes you sound like a spoiled child who interrupts and demands to be the center of attention in every conversation. The rude comments are just as childish. Grow up little boy, stop insulting people and just STFU, this is not a Robby Gordon fan site.

I think fly has some good info, and it was great having the blog and just up to date info during dakar. I think if you had the experiance to back up some of your "insight" people would respect your words more. No personal attack against you, but ive done it all, and know what it takes, and having a good chase guy, can make up for the crappy driver. Its a team thing, and everything needs to, i dont know, co-exist, or there will be problems, and everyone ends up unhappy. The drivers end up the most out of luck, w/ all that time, prep, and money down the drain, because of bad decisions on the chasers part. I say(not that it means anything) come down, even if you help a small team, you'll feel accomplished knowing you helped them do something they love. That way, you can use your experiance as a way to back up your posts. srry, its just IMO.
On track of the topic, I think it would be awesome for RG to have a setup similar to wat was posted! definitly be a major step up, but maybe they can get the baja chase tactics to work well enuff to justify, NOT spending an extra $000,000+ amount of money. I hope he does good at the 500 and goes 1-2 !!!!

Thanks for the props on the Blog. I liked what you posted and thought it was written with respect. Thanks. So I will give you an FYI. This NASCAR stuff is real simple as far as my involvement. No Robby= no care about NASCAR.
More to your wonderment;I have followed Off Road since I was 12 years old and off road is my Motorsport of choice. I co-dawged and built 3 Score/HDRA and LaRana trucks (Chevys and Toyotas) and chased all in stock full and stock mini. I've chased and been stuck out in the desert for days, I’ve been on my back in the hot gravel and dirt. I've been starving and dehydrated. I know what's it's all about. I have the skills to build any one of the trucks you see today from scratch.
I have built and owned several show trucks featured in magazines and even built my own Monster Truck. I have built at least 20 engines all High HP. From age 17 to 24 (while going to school) I was a sales, installer and fabricator for an Off-Road Retail store. Started and owned my own Off-Road shop when I was 25 and sold it.Once I got my degree I was a Studio Designer for BMW and Audi for 6 years.
I have the Experience and skills. It's just that guys like chase2 think if you aren't out there today you have no Street Cred. I guess Cal Wells or Larry Minor have no cred either since they aren't out there today. Just because I use my skills to make a secure living today and don't choose to give up that security in a sport that really supports very few families it shouldn't relegate my experience to null. I guess if people wouldn't be such pricks and get to know people they are talking crap about than they wouldn't be talking out there ***.
I see guys on here Like Derek Collins, Very Talented, Knows how to design, Knows how to Fab and Knows how to use a CAD system as only one of the tools in his arsenal. Just because he didn't go to MIT doesn't mean he don’t know how to design stuff or couldn't take 4 years out of his life and whiz through engineering school.
Today I'm a single dad with 100% custody of my 9 and 12 year old daughters. My no1 task in life is to get them through school too. (And not get prego) Ditching them for a week to go play with someone else’s toy is not my priority or is having to prove anything to few on this board. It doesn't put food on the table.
Who knows maybe in 10 years, when I’m 45, I may be in a position to get back out there with my buddies and run some races with my own ride.
I think it’s funny how some can actually talk crap about RG’s performance in Dakar. He was beating Mitsubishis and Volkswagens every stage except for when that bolt fell out of the stub axle and the radiator issue ended his race. I was proud our American counterpart was able do bring support and technology right from this very sport (USA off road racing)over there and have a decent showing. I can’t wait till the next Dakar. It will be much better.
I could go into any top team and be a major part in improving their performance. Would I do it for free? NO

That is awesome to read, that right there gives the "insight" into your posts, and i feel explains your position on everything(life, kids, responsibility). I am young and aspiring, tryn to race my truck, while prepping and building it up everytime i find a flaw(or a problem that occured, or i can forsee being an issue). I wish i was an engineer, and have the tools to make my race program top of the line. Reading that, show that in due time, good things will come. And really, they have been lately. People have noticed my hard work( even though im 3/3 for DNFing). The hard work and effort i have put in, is paying off, and I have older guys, willing to back me for such races as the BITD Vegas 2 Reno. As a young 21yr old service writer, i could no way afford such a race, or more along the lines of having a competent chase team. but with the right guys behind me, ill be stepping it up. It may not be baja, it may not be DAKAR, but it is HUGE to me. Anyways, besides being offtopic, thanks for the info. Take it easy, haha and if(more like when im big) if your still game, help is appreciated in all shapes and forms. Take it easy.

No Robby= no care about NASCAR.
Without the #7 my interest would drop some in NASCAR and of course I follow DAKAR even closer because of RG and I still belive he will be the 1st USA champion in that event (I would not count Miller out). The DAKAR blog rocks!

Sorry guys but it ain't me giving you all the neg votes, your guess is wrong. I've got both good and bad votes from this thread. Only one of the bad voters had the balls to say anything. "May 26th, 2006 10:12 payback's a *****" Gee thanks for giving me a neg vote when I never did anything to you. The only person I've had a problem with here is Fly. As a final word on RG, the dakar and likely hood of him taking home the win. Straight from the dakar website.
"As you know, the Dakar is not a speed race. As a rally raid, the main qualities required are the ability to stay the course for man and machine alike, navigation skills and crossing techniques."

ASO are the same guys that put on the Tour De France, Lance has been kicking their butts for 7 years and all they can do is accuse him of using drugs. If you think Nascar is out to get Robby, just wait until he kicks the Frenchie's butts a few times. Watch what ASO and the French Sports newspaper, Le Eqippe, which ASO owns, has to say!!Cofusious says: "He who owns the race and the newspapers gets to make all the rules."

my 0.02...
everybody likes drivers for their own reasons.
I'm a NASCAR fan, who's favorite driver is not RG. I like RG because he's an offroad racer. I took passing interest in DAKAR because it was an offroad race, and I like offroad racing. The 3am show times f'ing sucked until TiVo, so it was tough to follow. I paid more attention last year because RG was in it, AND the viewing times were more friendly to my schedule.
All the cross-pollination of drivers from different sports (moto-x to offroad, rally to NASCAR, NASCAR to LeMans, Jesse James to SCORE, etc) is increasing exposure for everyone, and no matter if it's for better or worse, it draws FANS and MONEY from a much larger pool, and that's a good thing. Racers are racers, give them something with a motor and they're going to find out how fast it is. I don't even race anything, but I can tell you the limits of everything I've ever owned, because I've exceeded them MORE than once. Well... except the new truck, I still owe too much money to thrash it.
Can't we all just get along? :D

Yeah i think that about sums it up. Well good luck next year who knows maybe he can bribe a few more ASO's and be allowed an even bigger engine maybe even more travel who knows maybe he will even get his own race where only he can enter then he will win for sure cos remember.
"Does it matter?? A WINS A WIN BABY!!!!"
To truley prove his "skills" why not enter on the same level as everyone else and then see how well he does.

Bribe the ASO, I think the other teams have already done that. I though that Team Gordon was informed that this next year was the last that the H3 in its current congfiguration would be allowed to run, why would that be. The only reason he has more suspension travel and more motor (restricted none the less) is because he has two wheel drive, please correct me if I am wrong. As far as running on the same level, I would bet that Team Gordon would, If they had $100 million in sponsorship and serious factory backing as the Volkswagon, Mitsubishi and BMW teams do. If I remember correctly, Robby also had two stage wins in "equal" equipment in his first Dakar. His finishing order would have been much higher as well if it was not for team orders dictating otherwise. Not to knock the Europeans, but if you are trying to say that Robby is less talented then any other driver in the Dakar, well......I will have to have a good laugh to myself and agree that you are entitled to your own opinion.
I would have to say, in my humble opinion, Robby Gordon is one of the most versatile, talented race car drivers in the entire world. I know all of the haters will disagree, but the man has won in every single kind of vehicle he has ever raced in. IMSA Cars, Stock Cars, various Off Road Cars, ALS Prototypes, Indy Cars. While not ever racing in F1, his first time in an F1 car, he was running competetive lap times IN THE RAIN, and unlike another Nascar driver, Robby earned his test, it was not a publicity stunt turned into a Speed Channel Special. As I have said before, if RG has an achilles heel of any kind, it is his entrepreneurialism IMO. While I admire anyone who has the "balls" to take on such an endeavor, it has also hurt him IMO by having lesser equipment then if he would have just concentrated on driving for a "powerhouse team". Any time he has done so, he has had alot of success. That being said, I will challenge you to find anyone on earth that has the credentials matching Robby Gordon. Here are a few.......Mario Andretti, AJ Foyt and maybe Tony Stewart.
If you really want to make things equal, lets take all of those other drivers you are referring to and give them the same amount of money and support that Team Gordon has had, let them build their own teams with that budget and lets see how they do against Robby Gordon and Team Gordon. I would put my paycheck on Team Gordon in that scenario.

He is playing by the same rules as everyone else including JLS... They wrote the rules in 2004 and RG came to the table in 2005... Are you scared?
By the Way... He doesn't need more travel or a bigger engine. He will come back in 2008 with the same combo ready for action and the win.

Im sorry RGFan i think i may have said somthing i didnt mean. My gripe is not with Robby himself i met him several times at night in the bivowak really nice guy and an amazing racer nobody can say its not true cos it is. Even with loads of money and crazy luck you cant pick up half the titles he has so he must be good. My problem is with Fans that are Gung Hoe and automaticly think that he will win everything without really looking at the situation and checking on the facts.
I hate to say it but this year he had no real problems certainly not enoufe to make up 8 positions between him and first place. And remember thats with a few VW that should have been there till the end that would take him down to 10 or 11 place.
What makes you think he can come back next year with the same setup and win. All those big teams are gunna go away and make there cars better and faster and be placing faster times. Which will only push him further down the board.
If he wants a real chance he needs to get works team or some seriouse backup. I sound like a broken record i know but its the truth.
And finaly the major reason why he wont win is cos they dont want him to im afraid. You only have to look at the bike catagory to see what lengths A.S.O. will go to put the ones they want to win on the podium. In fact you dont even have to look at the bikes look at my man Nasser 3rd place in a deisel BMW. WHACK huge time penalty for speeding and suprise suprise who ends up in his position a frenchman.
If you guys want to root for sombody why not Jonah Street this guy kicks seriouse butt. See how well he was doing on a 525 against FACTORY riders with much bigger engines. Imagine what he could have done if he had had the right bike. Well actually once again ASO f**king with people to get who they want on the podium.

Good points. However RG will win this thing next year, I say that because I have been saying it all along. He will win it. He had a few issues right out of the gate that kept him down this year. The key for anybody to win this thing is making it out with the fewest mistakes. RG finally has a really good gauge as to what it takes to finish and exactly where he is getting beat. Also, his team will remain mostly intact for next year.
The ASO knows what opening the Dakar to the American Market means for them. Next year when Robby and Lance are going at it for team usa the exposure will be huge.
