I have a question about wiring our gps. It may sound stupid but I don't want to fry our new gps. We have a Lowrance 580 Baja system and the wiring harness has three different leads. One is for power/ground and one is for the antennae. My question is for the third lead. It is a data lead. In the book it says that the data wires are to be wired into either another unit or something else. We only have one gps and I don't know what to do with the data leads. Can I just cap them off? The book is a little vague. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

I'm pretty sure the data lead is for up & down loading data/maps into the unit from your computer. It should have a USB style plug on it and you should be ok to cap it.

The data leads are four wires. There wasn't a usb port. We capped them off and it worked fine. Thanks Craig.

The data leads are for sending GPS info to your Auto-pilot. You DO have an Auto-pilot, don't you?

Auto pilot like in an airplane? I didn't know they had that for cars. I'll have to look into that.
Just kidding, I'm not that dumb.

I believe those data wires can also be used to link your GPS to your radar and fisfinder. Always handy if you break during a race, you can find some fish to catch and eat while you wait to get extracted!
Oh yeah, they can also send cool things like speed and position to a data logger or a video overlay device for your on-board camera.

I have a Lowrance 2400 and from what I was told you can have two units linked together so the driver and co-driver get the same info. I have seen a couple guys doing this in thier race trucks.
I love the Idea and might do it in my Class 3 Bronco. We would be able to do different views and info.
