Ipod linked to my race helmet

OK, I can't be the only guy that wants to hear my tunes while racing and prerunning. What Needs to happen in order for me to hear the tunes while racing is..... I need to have the intercom linked as well. Gotta be able to hear and speak to my co driver. Not a lot of conversation takes place but still need that option. Anyone figured this out or have an idea?

Linking the Ipod into the intercom somehow... Bueller......Bueller...?

I believe most companies like PCI, Racer X, and even RLH offer a race-style intercom with the audio input for something like a discman, ipod, etc. I do believe I've even seen a post where someone (Might have been SCOTT @ PCI) say they could take an existing two place intercom and modify it to allow for a media input of some sort. If I'm not mistaken, it too is voice canceling, but if I remember correctly, doesn't kill the music entirely it just attenuates. I think I've encountered this in a race setting where someone racing was transmitting through the radio and not only could we hear them talk, but you could make out music playing in the background. I know it's possible.

Which intercom do you have?

I have a PCI 4-link Pro Intercom and PCI sells 9pin molex adapter (plugs into the back of the intercom) that has a 1/8" audio jack on the end of it. Pretty simple setup. You can also make your own pretty easy.

My prerunner has a PCI intercom that has audio plug. I can plug in my Ipod or XM radio. When we need to talk, the music is automaticly muted into the background.

i run it. i dont have my race r adio wired into my intercom, so it kinda sucks to have to listen for it. im gonna wire in the race radio, and ipod into the intercom. that way i can constanly hear both, but when i talk it will cut em out. i will just talk through the mic, but listen in our head sets...

I know this is a little different application than what you are talking about on the I-pod. But in my pre-runner we hooked the ipod directly to the amp, not using a typical cd reciever interface. This eliminates having to mount a deck and the failure issue with skipping and dust. Its a clean set-up and works great. When we built it, most of the stereo shops said it wouldnt work or sound good. But it is perfect for off-roading or any rough environment and sounds great. Even set the same system up in my boat.

i would like to do something similar to that, where i can have my 2 10" subs playing the bass, and then all the highs will be in the helmet(or head set). i will be driving around, bumping music that no one can hear except the bass. it will look stupid, but will be cool to "feel" the music, and be hearing it in the helmet. care to show me what is involved, and what wires i will need to get it to work. thanks!

I just did this with a Kenwood AMFM stereo CD with audio input out the rear (not Front)

You can hook up a AM FM radio/cd/or whatever with audio input (out the back) and hook your ipod, mp3, satellite or whatever, run it through the radio and hook up the L and R front leads (Positive only) to the avcomm AR550 and listen to any of those throught the rear Molex connector, 9 pin, use pins 1 and 2 to the l and r speaker outputs from the radio.

A sweet way to install this is in a plastic water/ dust-proof Marine stereo mount, Model 548594 from West Marine.

If you want to go from the ipod directly to the amp just run a left right cable out of the top of the ipod (sorry dont know the technical term) and into the input on the amp. All the controls are from the ipod. The sound is great.

That direct ipod hook-up is a great idea, and one that ive often thought about. Glad to see someone tried it.
FWIW, you can get a cable that Y's into the Red/White (L/R) so you can have stereo sound instead of just Left.

as of yesturday,

went to a stereo shop we use at work to sublet stuff out. im getting a charger/ output RCA's for my ipod. the charger is stationary, and just has a cord that plugs into the bottom the ipod, and charges and get the signal from it. the other end of the charger has the RCAs (red and black) coming out. well we got a Y connector for each RCA ( 2 reds now, 2 blacks now) 1 set of the red and blacks will go into the back of the radio head unit(aux input) and play the ipod in my speakers and my subs, the other set of RCA's will go into a Y and have a small mono jack(ear phone plugin) i will plug that into the intercom. AWESOME SETUP! cost me about 60$ total, and i can now have my ipod playing in the truck on the door speakers, and in the intercom/race helmets. all i wanted was for my subs to hit, and for me to hear the highs in the headsets. so i will be driving around w/ no highs, just subs(will sound/look funny) but i will be hearing the music crystal clear in the headsets(the nice PCI ones). if anyone is interested, i can get the wires and this setup for you too. truck is 1/2 race and 1/2 play(will be nice in glamis for easter) and then be ready to rock the next MDR race in may!
