Since this is not a “Rally” board and there is no rally forum I thought I would start the “unofficial” rally thread. There are quit a few of you who are interested in rally racing and the WRC so lets keep all of the rally related conversation in one thread so as not to clog the board up with rally stuff. Who knows, maybe the thread will show enough interest and a forum will be generated. http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Friday, 18 January 2002 Todays stages are over, here is a run down...... http://www.race-dezert.com/cgi-bin/wwwthreads/images/icons/smile.gif
French manufacturer Citroen has grabbed the headlines for good and bad reasons on the first round of this year's FIA World Rally Championship, the Rallye Monte Carlo, which started from the Principality today. The team's young driver Sebastien Loeb backed up the form that took him to second overall in Sanremo last year to move into the overall rally lead on the day's fourth stage. But there was disappointment for his team-mates Thomas Radstrom and Philippe Bugalski: neither got to tackle a single stage, after they both succumbed to engine failures on the road section to this morning's service in Digne les Bains.
Loeb's ended today's final test with more than 30sec advantage over the Rallye Monte Carlo winner for the last three years, Tommi Mäkinen. The four-times world champion survived a spin in the longest stage of the day to hold second on his first drive in a Subaru Impreza, and other fancied runners like Colin McRae, Petter Solberg, Marcus Grönholm and Carlos Sainz remain in touch. Others hit trouble in the fickle Monte conditions - Gilles Panizzi picked up penalties after hydraulic problems, while Hyundai drivers Armin Schwarz and Freddy Loix both set encouraging times this morning, only to retire by early afternoon. Loix crashed heavily, sustaining a badly bruised foot, while Schwarz slid off on SS4 and retired with broken suspension
.....so after today, leg 1 is in the books.

You Da Man! Thanks for the fix (again). I may have to jump back on the Suburu bandwagon if there is such a thing. I have kind of a soft spot for McRea though. I was pullin for him last season and then the big one happened. Plus he's an x-Subu guy soo -
Well Monte Carlo could be compared to the Daytona500 or any other traditional "Opener", in that a lot of things change/happen over the course of the season.
I hope all racers and spectators finish each stage the way they began each stage. SAFE. Enjoy

Whoa... Slow down.
Ever since adelphia took away my speedvision I've been out of touch with racing all together. I've got a few questions.
1) First of all, when did Makkinen go to Subaru? Why did he? Who replaced him?
2) When did Burns go to Puegot? Why?
3) When did Citrogen get a fast car?
By the way, there is no such thing as too much rally coverage.

Norway's first real WRC hope cut his teeth in rallycross (a massive sport there) but it didn't take him long to make an impression at rallying's top flight. Plucked from obscurity by Ford in 1998, Solberg only needed 18 months to go from wet-behind-the-ears hotshoe to Subaru's number two position and a million-dollar salary. Little wonder he's many pundits' tip for a world title before too long. But can he cope with the pressure and give new team mate Tommi Makinen a run for his money?

Rally is getting way popular these days. I must say I to love the sport. I have been around it since the late 80's. When I worked at Rod Millen Motorsport in the early 90's i would always drowl at the Mazda 323 gtx and the old RX-7 they had. I can see this sport growing big time.
We can all get into this sport on a shoe string buget. Stock class rules for the California Rally series states the car or truck you start with can't blue book for over $4000.
I can't wait for rally to explode!

Well here's today's Monte Carlo update:
---------
Saturday, 19 January 2002
Frenchman Sebastien Loeb and Finn Tommi Mäkinen are locked in battle at the front of the opening round of this year's FIA World Rally Championship, the Rallye Monte Carlo, which continued today. Reigning World Junior Champ Loeb, who hit the top of the leaderboard yesterday, extended his advantage this morning with a fastest time on the day's second stage. But as the event moved to more traditional stages, such as the famous run over the Col de Turini, Mäkinen (Rallye Monte Carlo winner for the past three years) began to close the gap between the pair once more. They entered this evening's final two stages separated by less than half a minute.
There have been clear blue skies over the French mountains again today, but conditions on the roads themselves have ranged from dry asphalt to sheet ice and greasy frost. The tricky Alpine passes caught out a number of crews, including Skoda's Roman Kresta and Peugeot driver Harri Rovanpera. They both retired with suspension and steering damage, but Subaru's Petter Solberg and Carlos Sainz were both able to continue after slight 'offs' this morning.

I am surprised at the overwhelming positive reaction to Shawns poll! I voted no, and I own a rally car! The reason I voted no was that are entire websites dedicated to this (just as RDC is dedicated to desert racing).
I didn't see any mention of these other sites in this thread, so here's a couple:
www.bensrallypage.com (http://www.specialstage.com>www.specialstage.com
<A)
SpecialStage.com is similar to RDC. They have even put up the cash for their own Cup. 2002 will be the second year for the "Special Stage Independent's Rally Championship". This is closed to factory teams, and only independents can compete. Pretty cool.
In light of the positive nature of the poll here, I would suggest that someone contact Herr Klaus, and see if a Rally Forum could be added to RDC. It would be much easier to have a variety of threads than what were are doing in this one thread. (Might even drive some of the CRS competitors to RDC! .) Further, how many realized that CRS, SCCA, and WRC events were covered in the Dusty Times??!
For those interested in being a part of it, here are a few upcoming events to the California area:
Feb 23: Rally School at Ridgecrest (Shawn and I will be there)
Feb 24: RallySprint at Ridgecrest
May 3-5: Rim of the World Rally. Palmdale, CA (My Rally debut)
Aug 23-25: Gorman Ridge Rally. Frazier Park, CA
Sep 20-22: Treeline Rally. Monrovia, CA
Nov 1-3: Prescott Forrest Rally. Prescott, AZ
Dec 13-15: Ramada Express Rally. Laughlin, NV (Did someone say Choo-Choo bar??!!)
Anyone reading this is welcome to be a part of my team! We can use all the help we can get. The above events are all California Rally Series events that I am doing. Click on the CRS link to see a complete schedule.
There are more than this though! Here is a link to the SCCA Performance Rally home page. You can find schedules, rules, etc there.
Rally is very close to off-road in many ways. One such similarity is the fight against the green weenies. They face the same issues we do believe it or not. Checkout these links to discussions:
