stage 9 - Monday 9 January 2006 | Nouakchott > Kiffa (http://www.dakar.com/2006/DAK/LIVE/us/900/parcours.html)
Connection 30 km
Special 599 km
Connection 245 km
Total 874 km
The well track

For the rally’s longest special, stretches of dense dunes over twenty kilometres in length follow on from each other at the beginning and the end of the route. Between the two sandy stretches, driving will be over a fast, rocky track. At places, the track crosses large dunes which will have to be got round to stay on large, black-soil plateaux.

No special for the bikers
Tomorrow the rally leaves Mauritania and heads to its fifth country: Mali. A shorter 333km stage including 283km of timed effort. The vegetations thickens… More dirt tracks and speed. The competitors will have to be extra cautious in the many village crossings. A real transition day on the Dakar.
However the special will only concern the cars and trucks.

Indeed, the stage planned between Kiffa and Kayes will be covered in liaison from start to finish for the bike race. The organisers, the teams, the bikers and the bike race officials that gathered together after yesterday’s stage have decided to neutralise stage 10 as a tribute to Andy Caldecott who passed away during the special that was covered between Nouakchott and Kiffa. All the bikers are asked to gather together at 7:30 AM for a briefing and a minute of silence in memory of the Australian biker. The first biker will take off at 8:30 AM in the order of yesterday’s special.

The first car will take off as planned at 11:30 AM. The Volkswagen will absolutely want to react after losing the dune battle against Mitsubishi.

with Alphand's crash today, and having a look at the gaps in the classification, I can forsee the mitsubishi management giving instructions to ease off somewhat.

Godspeed Andy.

Talked to Mark Today. He still sounds great and is looking forward to getting into Dakar. He has the chance at a top ten finish which is awesome.

In my last couple of conversations with Mark I kept forgetting to ask him about some of the details in Stage 7 and his roll overs. I had asked him if Robby helped pull him back over, and that is what burned up his clutch. Mark said that Robby did not help him out, he didn't see him. On the first rollover, the car was on its side, so they dug a hole on the back side of the car and finally were able to push it into the hole and then dug themselves out of the hole with the car uprighted. On the second rollover they did a complete endo and landed on all fours, got their bearing and kept going.

That it for now. All other updates are on the web site usadakar.com

Interesting, that we had conflicting reports DIRECTLY from the field. Probally go over like a fart in church with the manufactures?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking when the 2nd story came out.
