Shouldn't need spares with UMI motors. I don't think Darkar rules allow you to swap motors anyway.

Yes, I agree very good engines. Same as the C6R I'm told. I'm pretty sure in Dakar you can change engines. Last year, didn't one of the Mitsubishi guys swap one out after stage 5 or 6?

From Dakar.com Cars & Trucks Sporting Regulations:
10P1 ALL GROUPS
Before arriving at scrutineering, all competitors must provide, on certain parts, a hole allowing fixing of seals, on pain of being refused a start. The competitor is responsible for the existence of all marks and seals during the event.
Engine block: a hole allowing the passing of a seal (diameter = 3,5mm minimum).
There must be some sort of time penality for making a swap/breaking the seal.
BTW, welcome back ActionJackson.

are you sure it isn't an LS7 that Robby is going to use?

The guys at UMI are calling it an "LS2".
Mark_Miller
December 7th, 2005, 12:26
It is an LS2, which is 6 liters. The LS7 is 7 liters and would be a better option for HP and Torque but then the car would have a minimum weight that was to heavy. The restrictor size remains the same for either size motor. And for you guys in the know, we do have to run pump gas so the LS2 compression ratio did have to be adjusted to meet that requirement. Ryan and I run a UMI LS2 in the trophy truck now and I can confirm it is a great motor and UMI is really on the cutting edge for this stuff.

Mark, Very Cool! Question, how does the UMI power compare to the Turage's power, I understand the turbo diesel has a different power band. RG said there was some turbo lag and a bit of a delay when on and off the throttle. He said it made real good power once you pull through it and can get on the pipe. RG said he liked the diesel and was impressed. But, how different of a feeling is it compared to what you know about the two power plants? Advantages for both?
Also, have you had a chance to drive last year's TDI compared to this year's version?

The turbo lag is pretty much gone with the new technology. I have driven so many different spec motors I lost track, but the difference from the one Robby drove and the new motors is big***BIG. I think the motor that Ryan and I tested was even better than what Robby had but it was a long ways off the new package.
Also there is technique to driving a turbo motor like never lifting and using the brake even when you are pinned. Which is really hard to do when you have trained not to do this in the Trophy Trucks. I really like how much technology VW is bringing into the sport to push the Diesel technology.
My pick for Santo Thomas to Valle de Trinidad is the VW package and for San Felipe to Matomi wash is the buggy.

Last I heard between $12-15k for the motor, but that was when first released. Someone might have some current info and prices.

I was under the impression that you had to run restrictor plate on gas and turbo engines in Dakar? I do know that a turbo does not care if sized correctly about inlet restrictions, ps anybody got any photos on the H3 for Robby? we heard he took a class one car and put an H3 body onto it

All you LS7 guys, Do not waste your time! UMI is the only one you want to deal with on this. They are working direcly with GM on the development. I have heard 20 stories of guys who have LS7's but no one knows how to use them in an off-road appllication except UMI. And for sure you will get my experiance along with Robby and every top shelf Engineer at GM Racing when that motor fires up in your Trophy Truck.
It is my opinion but I already made the mistakes so learn from me. Call UMI to help you or you can use that thing as a boat anchor.

UMI's knowledge of the engine management system is second to none. Scott Urschel, the owner of UMI, has been doing all of our engine electronics and our Trophy Truck has never ran so fast. His system is really the fastest and absolutely bullet proof.

Yes, sic_racing, they carry titanium valves and adjusted the compression ratio for 470+ lb/ft of torque. I might be wrong now but something like 10 something on the LS2 to 11:1 on the LS7.
Edit: Amazing what a search engine will do..........10.9:1 on the LS2, 11.0:1 on the LS7 that took it from 395 lb/ft at 4000rpm to 475 lb/ft at 4200 rpm (where are all the guys that can answer this better?)

Edit: Amazing what a search engine will do..........10.9:1 on the LS2, 11.0:1 on the LS7 that took it from 395 lb/ft at 4000rpm to 475 lb/ft at 4200 rpm (where are all the guys that can answer this better?)
Now think what happened when Katech ripped it apart and built Robby new ones from scratch. Robby has the LS2 but his compression is 10:1 via FIA regs. UMI set up several different ECM programs from Max economy to Max power for the Various stages.
Robby has a kick asss team for Dakar he has several Indy car guys. Here are the three mechanics.
Paul Mischel (marty Coyne's CC), Total brain->Bobby Golasinski (Bobby Rahal Crew Cheif), Bharat Naran (cart-Arciero Wells)
Plus RG has 9 other top Cats.
