Those green dots http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/images/reputation/reputation_green.gif below your name are a representation of your reputation.
After every post any user may press the scale icon http://www.race-dezert.com/forum/images/firefox/buttons/reputation.gif to approve or disapprove someone's post and even leave a comment along with it. Those comments can be read in your CP.
Your reputation power is posted as a numerical value below your name, dictates how many reputation points you may add or remove from the person or post you are judging.
Your reputation altering power is based on these factors:
- For every 365 number of days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
- For every 500 number of posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
- For every 100 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.
- You need a minimum of 1 reputation point to have reputation altering power.
- It takes a minimum of 30 posts to have any altering power ability. Sorry newbies.
- You may give away 30 reputation 'clicks' within a 24 hour period.
- You must rate 20 different users before rating the same user again.
- Every new user has a default reputation of 10 but the reputation altering power of 0.
The higher your reputation the more green dots you will have. This means that you have been with us for a while, post a lot and others generally like what you have to say.
The idea behind this system is to have fun in the first place and secondly to encourage our users to be active in the community with quality posts. Good post will be rewarded by green dots.

Users can also collect MINUS points and the green dots turn into grey dots, then red dots.

but it doesnt even mean anything right?

If the system is used by everyone the right way then it means that your posts are appreciated. I hope it doesn't turn into a popularity contest. Also its perfectly normal for a person that just joined us to have a lower reputation power and consequently less Reputation. Does it mean his posts are less important? No.
Its something to play around with. One of the reasons to switch over to VB (this forum software) is that there are tons of bells and whistles plug-ins available. If we sense abuse we will terminate it.
I forgot to mention it above that all Admins on this site have a reputation power of 10 to begin with and we will get things going by rating new threads and quality posts from now on. As we have more reach we can hopefully encourage better desert racing dialogs...

- Every new user has a default reputation of 10 but the reputation altering power of 0.
So this means you get one green bar and O rep power correct. Sorry just got a tad confused there...lol
And since my rep power is at 1 (i think) I now can up the power of others if I feel there post was informative, etc.?

"Those comments can be read in your CP."
Where are they found after going there?

I guess this is why my rep points went from 13 to 9 over the last RG debates on the Jesse,Mcmillin TT threads. LOL Punks!!!

They must have made a really good post to do that ;)
Your 100s of informative posts and years of input don't mean squat in comparison rep wise, rep is the worst feature vBulletin ever came up with because its not even close to being fair.

I'm confused...
Stars were way easier. I guess this is more about quality than a popularity contest though...

I have to agree Chuck..:p
.....if we both agree that we want to remove negative remarks about each other, can they be removed? That is speaking hypothetically, of course..*****cough, cough******

Is their a limit to how old a post can be for it to be rated? I just realized today that I got a negative for my comments on Jesse James and I'm wondering if some kid reads it after the show airs or later, if they will be able to rate me for it. Will our comments ona particular subject haunt us as long as we post on RDC?

And, is their a way to know who left the comment?
klaus

The new rating value will stick with you for ever and users may old posts. Keep in mind that comments left for you can only be read by you in the CP. If someone is leaving abusive comments let us know and we will open a trouble ticket and deal with it.
You wont see who left the comments and who rated you. System Admins can see who rates us. If we are capable of looking into who is rating who, but keep that info confidential.

Just realized that the negative thing that I got has now gone away, not complaining, just wondering if I earned it or it was rescinded or something.

I thought I had the whole dot thing figured out and then I got a grey dot. The comment that came with the grey dot was "very helpful and genuine." Is the grey dot negative because the comment wasn't. I hope someone can set me straight because now I don't understand this dot situation. Thanks.

I'm sorry if I still don't get it but does that mean that two people have given me reputation marks on the same topic? As in one person gave me a green mark and then some jackass made it grey? Craig, if this is wrong can you point me in the right direction? Maybe I should just stop paying attention to my reputation marks, that would make things a lot easier.

Jeff, if my take on this is correct, one particular post you made was given an equal number of both positive and negative votes. I'm starting to think that the consensus around here is that people don't mind the negative votes as much as they mind not knowing who gave it to them. The lack of comments common with votes both good and bad appears to be universally annoying also.

Thank you, Craig, I think I get it now. This whole green, red, and grey dot fiasco is kind of a pain in the butt. I agree that people should have to leave their name for bad or good comments. Thanks again I am now on track.

According to those standards I qualify to have rep altering power but I can't use the rep system. When I try, I'm told I don't have permission.
