I would go with an econ mendeola for around 4-5k new. Should be stronger and last longer than the 091. Do plan on pre-running or sand with this car?

what do you guys have to say about the necessity of a 5spd over a 4spd mendeola? There's a few thousand dollar difference there.

If Prerunning In Mexico Get The 5th Gear. If Not. Dont Worry About It. 5th Is Nice On The Highways.

Final ratio can be the same with 4 or 5 so there is no difference on the Highway.

I would be using it as a true dual sport, desert and sand...didnt want to drop 5k into just a tranny...but oh well I guess.

$5K is chump change for a tranny that works as well as the Mendeola. Bite the bullet and be happy. ;-)

Ya do evan try to go with a 091. You would need to be so carefull with the throttel that it wouldnt even be fun.
My brother has a 10/12 car that had a 091 in and after about the 4th time of lunching the gears in 5 races he put the full race 4 spd meneola in. If he would have done this the first fime he blow it up he would have been money ahead.
I also would recomend that if you are going to use this car in hard pack get the good gear set. Dont try to use the econo stock syncros.

I'll bite, and be the odd man out. I know of 5 guys that have a 4.3 chevy, bolted up to a built 091, and it works. The difference is about 2k between them, and as long as you don't dump the clutch, you'll be fine. These are all PLAY cars, not RACE cars. If this is a RACE car, Mendi E box hands down. If you really like to drive hard, get the 2D with the g-50 input shaft upgrade.
On a side note, it does make a difference what motor you're running. a 250hp turbo subaru won't make near the torque that a 4.3 chevy does. It's the torque, and hard shifting that kills them, not the hp.
