hey guys... my ranger is throwing a "check engine" light and I'd like to know what it is. I need to know what kind of reader to buy for a '03 ford ranger with a 4.0 motor? And any recommendations on where to get one for a good price. I know my '04 f-250 is a OBDII port.... but I think the ranger has an older setup on it..... is there a reader out there that will do both? Instead of buying a reader.... can I get software and a cable for my laptop (they have this for my f-250).

Thanks.

If your ranger is a 93, then it is an OBD1, the change to OBD2 came in 1994 I believe. Just about any autoparts store will carry a reader which can read both OBD1 and 2. Last time I checked they were about $300.00

My 98' ranger(4.0) had the engine lite go/stay on. I have app. 77,000 miles.I replaced both 02 snsors.Lite went off.A coworker did suggest that I disconnect the ground to the battery overnite,to remove the error stored within?

My 99 will throw a light when i change/oil my K&N (even very lightly oiled, and dried for 2 hours). Usually disappeared in 2-3 days.

ya.... I have a feeling it is a O2 sensor..... I am picking up a code reader and will find out.

I picked up both 02 sensors at Napa for 110.00.The rear was easy,7/8 wrench. The front one took some fanagling. If you have an extra set of hands it would help unplugging, plugging in the connector.

If it's a 93 then you should be able to read codes without a code reader.
There is a procedure in the common Ford EFI books and shop manuals to
put a jumper into the code reader plug then count the flashes on the check
engine light on your dash. But code readers are cheap and easier. OBD-II
should have been introduced in 96. If it's an 03, then it'd OBD-II for sure
and I'd get a reader for it.
