This company http://www.newtech-ibs.com/ has developed a new brake design with a 360* contact, full floating caliper. This brake looks more like a clutch than a conventional caliper and rotor. Their website sucks, but if you dig around you can find some info on this revolutionary new brake.

I saw those on the discovery channel (or one of the educational channels). Very interesting technology.

with 360* contact, that makes me wonder; how do the heated gases escape? drilled and vented rotors?

Or something simple like slotted pads...

It looked to me like there were 6 or 7 pads around the rotor, with a little space between the pads.

Scott is right. I saw the same show. There are several pads that circle the rotor with small gaps between them. There is a Porsche racing in one of the touring car series with them right now. Don't recall what series but it has New Tech painted across the whole car. I imagine the team has a website. Possible info there.

what would be the benefit to have a brake system like this? the only thing i can think of is more braking power, but it seems like you can get adequate braking power with a properly setup version of whats already available.
