I am wanting to put a video recorder/camera in my car. What have people had good luck using. I was thinking a lipstick camera and some kind of digital recorder that doesn't use tape. I've looked at several, but I think that they might be to delicate to stand up to off-road use.

Thanks,

If you're at Suncoast today for BITD tech, we'll be displayed a rugged 4 camera system that is bullet proof. 120 or 250 gig available.

I'm still experimenting with a completely low-buck approach.

Used E-bay 8mm camcorder.

+ Army Surplus Ammo Can.

Hole-saw one end and install some plexi-glass, bolt the ammo can to the cage, stuff it full of "tool foam" shove the camera in and turn it on, shove more foam on top, and latch.

Amazingly, it actually worked OK.

Bill,

Contact Randy Chase at Chase Cam (http://www.chasecam.com) and tell him that Shawn Shaw from Pro Image and SCNAX sent you.

Randy provides good advice and service. He should have something to suit your needs.

Check out Paradigm-Pro.com (http://www.paradigm-pro.com/home.htm). We have InCar Clips from our cameras on the site. They have been tested to the max and still provide excellent picture and recordings. Give me a call and I can give you more information. 949.338.2835

Hopefully Billy Manfroy will see this. He did an in truck camera. I think it was similar to the mix of the low buck and lipstick camera versions. It worked great, he also hooked the audio from the intercom and race radio into it. Billy where are you?

I went with a camera from hoyttech.com and a Sharp mini DVR. Great quality video. Only problem is the 60 minute tape. I posted a video a while back. do a search for Western/KIT racing test if you want to see it.

In the Elite off road car they used a camera from helmetcamera.com. It was mounted just behind the driver and co-driver. The camera was stuck in a padded bag behind the pass side foot rest.It Worked good. The only thing you have to watch is where the camera is mounted verses the light coming in the cockpit. If its in a shaded place it washes out the picture. The camera has a hard time adjustion the white balance. If the interior is bright it workes nicely. Kinda cool to see drivers and terrain at the same time. Viosport also has cameras at a reasonable price. You should'nt have problems with the camera if you put it in a well padded bag.

Another option is to find a regular 8mm camcorder that has video input jacks, and use it as a vcr. Then you use a security camera or lipstick camera and feed its signal to the camcorder in a padded case. I know it works, but I don't have any brands or part numbers for you.

Thanks for all of the help and links. If I use my Sony camcorder, should I get a large memory card for it and record to it? Or is it OK to record to tape? I definately am going to have it in a padded sealed box, with a lipstick camera. I am worried about jarring it while recording.

Thanks again,

Bill, I think you will need to record to tape, in order to get useful recording time. The pounding is hard on the camcorder. I used a canon 8mm and had to send it in for repairs twice, then it died:( But that was cycle riding and it wasnt well padded.
