View Full Version : Toyota Front End Spring Rates

I need to get custom springs made for a custom shock we are making for our senior project that is going on the front end of my toyota and I am trying to gather information about what spring rate to have made. So what are all you guys out there with Toyota's and coilovers in the front running for spring rates? My truck has a setup as follows...
3" wider a-arms
22RE motor
2WD
33" X 10.50"
Thats about all that should affect the spring rate, anyone with a setup similar to that, let me know what you are running please, thanks for all the help in advance

Oh ya forgot to mention that, it will be single rate also because custom springs are 325 each and I would rather buy 2 than 4.

i run a 6 inch 500 over a 14 inch 600 on my pavement pounder...

What's the leverage ratio (how far out are the shocks mounted on the lower arm)?

12-1/8" to the shock and 17-3/4" to the uniball so 0.683. I know that there are spring rate calculators out there but I am looking for more of practical information rather than theories. I know they have there place and if I knew the unsprung weight and the weight and each corner and the exact angle the shock would be at, then maybe I would be using them, however, until then, just checking out what is out there on your guy's trucks and what works.

375 over 600...But the 375's on only in play for about 2" of up travel then the 600's come in. Shock valving and application are important to consider, ours is for shortcourse and we run heavier valving in the shocks since it's only on the track for 15 minutes at a time and shock heat isn't an issue. My ratio's and placements are about the same as yours. You can also use less spring if you use more shock travel since the resistance gets greater the more the spring is compressed. We use about 7" of shaft for 13" of travel and the springs are preloaded about 1-1/2" at full extension so it's starts out at a slightly higher rate...Curt

I have 6" over arms and run a 700x14 with a 350# coil on top cut to 6" just to take up space. Many say it too much but, I like it.

the arms on my truck(4cyl) are 4.25" per side over. the lower shock mount is 2/3 out the arm. i run a single 600x18 coil. i had a problem with front end hop that we couldnt remedy through valving. we thought it was too much spring. so i got a set of 18x500 coils to try but i rolled the truck and destroyed the right front suspension.
im gonna be building new arms but 1" wider per side, so i will be a total of 5.25" over per side. im gonna leave the lower shock mount where it is in relation to the arm pivot at the frame and still run the 600 spring for starters. im hoping the extra inch of a-arm past the lower shock mount will leverage more and help out with the hop. if not ill try the 500's.

When and where did you roll the truck, Matt??
How did it happen, did I miss a post? Or did you post it up on Dezert-stRangers?

last lap of the last wheel to wheel race at the ROR, 3 weeks ago. i posted it here and on DR. there are pics of the carnage on both sites' ROR threads. and bent a-arm pics on about the 25-26th page of the "updates" thread in fab section on DR.

Dylan Evans at Donahoe helped us to select coil-springs for our Total Chaos-equipped Tacoma. It's been working out great for us.
Distance from lower shock/spring mount to A-arm pivot = 11.5"
Length of lower arm from inner pivot to outer ball joint = 17.5"
3.0" x 18" x 500lb Eibach coil-springs (wheel rate is approx. 216)
