ALright i am finaly fed up and need some other peoples opinion. I have a 93 silverado 2wd 5.7 x-cab. I have had starter problems for the past year and a half. The cylinoid sp? seems to always go out on me. The actual starter motor is fine. The cylinoid is only 14 bucks to replace new. But every 6 months about more or less i have to replace it. i go to start the truck after being ran on the freeway or street and click click nothing the starter is dead. The electric shop said that the heat from the headers kills the life of the cylinoid. I am tired of replaceing them and want to see what other people with chevys have done if they had this problem.?

Or go with the shield and the mini gear reduction starter for more distance from the heat.

I was thinking of wrapping the header but i have heard all the stories of eating the headers up, ill try the shield first and if it dont work ill get the reduction starter.
Because man taking the stock starter of sux it like weighs 500 00000 lbs.

Heat shield is a great idea.....another fix I've used is wiring in a ford style starter relay and mounting it up high on the firewall(or anywhere away from heat)...back when I was a Toyota tech, we had a campaign to add a relay similar to this on early V6 Camrys...the starter on those cars was close to the manifold like a Chevy....it allows the solenoid on the starter to get the full amount of juice it needs to get thrown into the starter contacts....the reason you hear it click is because it doesn't fully engage the contacts and make the connection from the battery cable to the starter motor...

Do most late(r) model factory GM starters come with a heat shield Matt?? I'm used to dealing with pre 70's GM products, 'Vettes, Camaros, Tri-5's...no factory shield on those...I always thought it was an after market add on....

Put a heat sheild on the starter, and if you still feel like wrapping something wrap the starter with heat wrap. If you really want to get hi end put a gear reduction starter on it with sheilding and wrap, problem forever solved.

yeah, shields are common on most of the late models. the 4.8, 5.3 and so on have solenoid heat shields.
